GRUNER ROAD GRADER Filed June 15, 1921 2 Sheets-Sheet 2.
Ni? Lb Patented Feb. 3, 1925,
WAR-D GBUNEE, OF COLDNATER, MICHIGAN.
ROAD GRADER.
Application filed June 15, 1921. Serial No. 477,765.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARD GRUNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cold water, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Road Grader, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road machines, and more particularly machines of this character designed for grading or leveling road surfaces.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily attached to the running gear of a farm wagon, to convert the usual farm wagon into a road machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the scraping blade to various angles with respect to the ground surface over which the device is moving, there being provided novel means for retaining the blade in its positions of adjustment.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view disclosing the invention as applied to the running gear of a farm wagon.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through a farm wagon disclosing the invention as applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a sectional detail view disclosing the connection between the supporting arms and the blade of the attachment.
Figure 4: is a fragmental sectional view disclosing the means for securing the blade in its positions of adjustment.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device is shown as applied to the running gear of the usual farm wagon which includes front and rear wheels 5 and 6 respectively. The running gear also includes side rails 7 which have their ends connected to the axles 8 in the usual manner, and as shown a bar 9 has connection with the sidelrails 7 adjacent to the rear axle thereof, there being provided a yoke 10 secured to the bar 9 at each end thereof, as by means of the bolts 11 Eyhich passthrough suitable openings in the Connecting the side walls of each yoke adjacent to the lower end thereof, are the pins 12 which are positioned in the notched portions 13 of the bars 14 that have connection with the curved scraping blade 15. A suitable lever indicated at 16 is associated with each bar 14 and is formed with an eccentric head, to lock the bars against movement.
The blade 15 is curved in the usual manner and is provided with the brackets 17 which are disposed at opposite ends of the blade and have pivotal connection with the bars 14 as at 18, the rear ends of the bars, as before stated passing within the yokes. As shown more clearly by Figure 3 of the drawings, each of the bars 1 1 has pivotal connection with a head 14, as through the pivot pin 15 to permit of a vertical movement of the blade 15 with respect to the bars 14. The notched portions 13 are disposed in spaced relation throughout a portion of the length of each bar so that the bars may be adjusted within the yokes.
In order that the blade 15 will be held against lateral movement, an anchor chain 18 is provided which connects one end of the blade 15 with the reach 19 of the running ear.
A rod 20 is supported by the side bars of the running gear and has an operating lever 21, whereby the rod may be rotated. Secured to the rod 20 at a point intermediate its ends is a rod 22 which has connection with the chain 23 that also has connection with the blade 15 as through the hook member 24. Thus it will be seen that as the rod 20 is rotated, the blade 15 may be raised and lowered at the will of the operator.
It might be further stated that due to the constructions of the bars 1 1, the blade 15 may be disposed at various angles with respect to the ground surface.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a road grader, a body portion including a running gear, yokes secured to the running gear and depending therefrom, said yokes including spaced members, pins extending through the spaced members, it curved blade, brackets disposed adjacentto the ends of the curved blade, notched bars having their forward ends pivotal]; supported by the brackets, the notc hed portions 01 the bars lying between the spaced members of the yokes, and the notches of the bars adapted to accommodate the pins to hold the bars in adjusted positions, chains 10 having connection With the bracket members, and means connected with the chains for elevating and lowering the blades.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have :hereto affixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
