IMPROVEMENT IN PEGGlNG-JACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,528, dated June 30, 1874; application filed April 7, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. STEWART, of Sargentville, in the county of Hancock, State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pegging Jacks, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing my improvement.

Myinvention relates to that class of peggingjacks which are vertically and laterally adjustable, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed by which a cheaper and more effective implement of this character is produced than is now in common use.

The extreme simplicity of my invention renders an elaborate description unnecessary.

In the drawing, B is the bed-piece, which is hinged at one end to the clamp-holders M, so as to be moved vertically, and fixed in any desired position by the screw-crank L. The blockA is fitted to swivel on the bed B by means of the nut and bolt (0. At one end of the block A there is a head-stock or upright, (J, and at the other an upright or foot-stock, D. The rest F is fitted in the head-stock, being rendered adjustable longitudinally therein by means of the studs N and step H. The rest E, provided with the stud c, is disposed in the foot-stock D, being pivoted, or having a fulcrum near its center, so as to oscillate longitudinally. The crank-shaft l is provided with a screw-thread which works in a nut in the step 0, and has one end attached to the lower end of the rest E.

From the foregoing the nature and operation of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.

The shoe to he pegged is properly lasted, and the stud u inserted into the heel of the last, the toe of the shoe being supported by the rest F. The crank J is then turned so as to move the rest E into the position shown by the dotted lines 01, which will force the last down upon the rest F, and hold the shoe firmly for pegging or sewing, in a manner which will be clearly obvious. By elevating the bedpiece B, and fastening it by the crank-screw L, and turning the block A and securing it by the nut and bolt, a, the shoe may be arranged in nearly any required position. I construct nearly all parts of my improved pegging-jack of Wood, which very much lightens it and reduces its cost, and also renders it less laborious to use than one constructed entirely of metal. The rest E may be caused to press the last upon the rest F, as described, by means of a spring attached to the block A, and operating upon the lower end of the rest E but I prefer to use the shaft I.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is The bed-piece B, provided with the clamp M M and screw-crank, L, in combination with the head-stock G, and foot-stock D, rests E and F, and crank-shafts, I, all as shown, for the purpose described.
