Be it known that we, CHARLEsI-IOWARD and Janus J- KIRK, citizens of the United States and residents of the city of Chicago.

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bowl and Shade Support; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a shade or bowl support for lamps and comprises a depend ing hood member having a cylindrical base, into which the upper neck of the shade or bowl is adapted to fit in combination with novel adjustable means for engaging the shade or bowl and securing it to said support.

In referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 represents the shade support hav ing a shade 2 attached thereto. The support preferably consists of a metal hood having a reduced upper portion provided with an aperture 3. whereby the same may be readily suspended, and a cylindrical base 4 into which the attaching neck of the shade or bowl is adapted to fit.

be expanded, for receiving the neck of the shade or bowl and contracted for gripping orsecuring the shade or bowl to the support and means are provided. for varying the degree of flexure of the flexible portion for fitting di fl erent sizes of shades and for retaining the same in operative or inoperative position.

In the illustrated embodiment of this invention the shade or bowl supportingmeans comprises a member 5 secured circumferentially of the interior of the base and spaced a suitable distance from the wall thereof and a flexible circumferential member 6 secured at its innereend and free at its outer end, and adapted tobe contracted or expanded. In the present instance, the members Sand 6 constitute portions, of a metal band rigidly secured at one end tothe base by means of a rivet 7 and secured at an intermediate point by a rivet 8, the portion between the rivets being offsetfrom the interior of the wall of the base and constituting the member 5. A third rivet 9 spaced a short distance from'the rivet 8 marks the beginning of the flexible member 6 which lies substantiallyopposite the offset portion or member 5. The forward end of the flexible member 6 which lies spaced substantially a quadrant from the rivet 7, has an oscillatable member 10 in the form of a screw, pivoted thereto. which extends through a suitable slot in the wall of the cylindrical base and through a slot 11 in a keeper 12 secured to the outer surface of the base. An adjustablenut 13 is positioned upon the screw 10, the outer end of the nut is reducedand in the form of a teno'n that slidingly fits into the slot in the keeper 12. and the shoulders at the bottom of the tenon are rounded or bevelled as shown in Fig. 3, the outer end of the screw is provided with a rounded head, which, in connection with the beveled shoulders of the tenon, forms a guide that operates in the slot 11- The nut 13 may be adjusted to vary the contraction of the flexible member so as to clamp different sizes of shades 0r bowls- A resilient or spring latching member 14 is attached to the screw 10. This latching member consists of a spring wire having a pair of parallel arms: intermediate the upper ends of the arms the wire is coiled around the screw. The lower or free ends of the arms are bent inwardly and looped around the screw so that the arms may be pressed together. These resilient arms are adapted to slide in the guide-way of the keeper 12 and at one end of said guideway there are a pair of oppositelyextending lateral notches 15 into which the arms 1% will snap when the screw lever 10 is swung into that end of the slot, which is the opertive position thereof.

Then the screw member 10 is swung into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3, the flexible member 6 will expand so as to be closely against the interior surface of the support. allowing the upper neck of the shade or bowl to be inserted as shown in Fig. 2. Then by oscillating the screw or snapping it back into the full line position shown in Fig. 3. the flexible member 6 'ill be contracted or flexed inwardly to embrace the neck of the shade or bowl as shown in Fig. 2, which will be suspended from the members 5 and (i. lVhen the screw 10 reaches its operative position, the resilient arms 14 will snap into the notches 15 and lock the screw in such position. The arms 1st can, however, be pressed together to release the screw for swinging it in the opposite direction. If the shade or bowl should not be sutliciently tightly clamped between the circumferential supports 5 and 6, the nut 13 may be properly adjusted to produce a greater contraction of the flexible member 6.

It will be appreciated that a shade or bowl can be readily and quickly applied and removed from the support, and that the shade or bowl retaining means can be.

adjusted to properly secure the shade or bowl and that the operation is quickly and easily effected by simply snapping the screw backwards and forwardly.

li e are aware that numerous details of construction may be 'aried. through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

e claim as our invention:

1. A shade holder comprising a member having a cylindrical base, a band secured interiorly of said base at intermediate points, said band being inwardly offset between said points, and having a free flexible portion beyond one of said points, said holder having a slot adjacent the free end of said flexible portion, a slotted keeper provided with notches secured to said holder in registry with said slot, an oscillative member secured to the free end of said flexible portion and extending through said keeper, and expansible and contractible means on said operating member adapted for engaging said notches.

2. A. shade holder having a cylindrical base provided with a slot, a band secured interiorly of the base and having a free flexible portion extending adjacent said slot. a slotted keeper having opposed notches and secured upon said base over said slot, an oscillating member secured to the free end of said band and extending through said slot and keeper, and resilient latching means on said operating member adapted for engagement with said notches.
