and State'ot' Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass-Rim Stretchers, of which the following is a specificat-ion.

This devices for invention relates to the objects is to produce a device of this nature which will expand the rim in all directions so as to give it a circuiar shape rather than an elliptical one.

Another object is to produce a device of this nature which may be operated with one hand, leaving the other hand tree to make adjustments desired.

Another object of the invention is to produce a device of this nature which shall be simple of. construction, consisting of few parts, cheap and easy to manufacture and assemble, and highly eliicient for the purpose for which it is designed.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resioes in certain novel features of construction and combination and ar rangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Referring to the drawing in detail, represents a tubular handle member provided with a finger-piece proper 11 at one end and with a cupped element 12 at the other. Slidably mounted on the outside of the member 10 is a sleeve 13 through which passes a through-pin 14:, the same being movable in slots 15 formed in the handle member 10. Mounted on the through-pin let is a longitudinally movable plunger 16 which is constantly forced outwardly by a spring 17. The end of the member 16 is Serial No. 651,996.

These segments 20 are shown here as bei four in number, but more could be used i1 it at any time should be found desirable. The segments are held in the cupped element 12 by means of spring members 21 which are riveted to the cupped element and provided with heels 22 fitting in notches in the exterior surface of the seg- 13 s. Two of the members 21 are extended. downwardly into fingers 23 having cuppedout portions 2% to receive and hold the rim and are bent or flared outwardly so as to permit the easy entrance of the rim between the segments and the membore 2 1-.

in operation, the eyeglass rim is slipped on the end of the segments 20 and held in place by the grips 2 1-. The entire device is then set in a pan of hot water until the rim softens. The operator then backs up the device, pressing downwardly on member .11 and pulling upwardly on the ends 01": pin 14-. This brings up the portion 18 of the plunger 16 and forces the segments 20 outwardly equal distances in their respective directions thereby stretching the rim to the desired extent. The bottom outer edge of these segments are tapered so that during the process of stretching the eyeglass rim both sides of the groove in the rim will be stretched uniformly, and parallel with the rim proper. Graduations or scales 26 indicate the extent to which the rim has been stretched and the segments 20 are cut away at 27 so as to permit them to rock freely as is necessary for this operation.

While I have described what T deem to be the most desirable embodiment 01" my invention, it is obvious that many of the parts may be vaied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not lllllib myself to the exact details of construction herein shown nor to anything less than the whole 01 my inven' tion limited only by the appended claims.

What i claim is 1. An eye glass rim stretcher comprising a cup member, a plurality of movable seg ments, flat springs carried by the cup member and engaging said segments for connect- U in ing the segments to the cup member, a plunger movable along said segments for spreading the segments, certain of said segmentengaging springs having downwardly eX- tending fingers formed on their ends remote from the cup member and provided With cupped-out portions to receive and hold an eye glass rim.

2. An eye glass rim stretcher comprising a cup member, a plurality of movable segments, flat springs carried by the cup member and engaging said. segments for connecting the segments to the cup member, said segments provided With inclined surfaces, a plunger, a flared end on said plunger for engagement With said inclined surfaces for spreading said segments, certain of said segment-engaging springs being extended to form fingers having cupped-out portions to receive and hold an eye glass rim.
