IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol52,512. dated June 30, 1874; application filed March 7, 1 874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Moses L. POIRIER, of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of YVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Butt-Hinge, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved butthinge; Fig. 2, a sectional end view; and Fig. 3, a horizontal transverse section of the same on line 0 c, Fig. 1.

My invention relates to an improved butthinge, by which gates, doors, blinds, &c., may be neatly hung, so as to be thrown open to v either side, and carried back into closed position. The invention relates to an improvement in hinges; and consists in a peculiar construction for securing the cappiece of the pintle, so that it must be turned on the latter before it can be removed.

A in the drawing represents the hollow socket of the hinge, made of one piece with the socket baseplate B, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the gate-post, door or window frame. A pintle, 0, extends centrally through the socket A, resting with its head a on a cylindrical cap-piece, I), which is fitted to the upper end of the socket, and firmly rctained in position by a projecting lug, b, which looks into a recess, I), of base-plate B, for the purpose of preventing the separation of cappiece and pintle from the socket. A central front slot, (1, of the upper part of the socket A admits the insertion of the sleeve-piece into the socket. A transverse section of the socket A is cut out, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the lower edge or wall of the open slot thus formed is curved or inclined downward. 011 each side, from the rear to the front, there is a central notch or depression, (R. The Wrist or bar a connecting the sleeve E and plate E, occupies this depression when the door or gate to which it is applied is at rest.

The inclined lower edge of connecting plate or shank of sleeve E passes along the curved edge of the lower socket part on opening the gate, and slides back thereon by the weight of the same till it arrives at the lowermost point. The door, blind, or gate is thereby self-closing, whether thrown open in either direction, as the symmetrically inclined socketedge carries the same back toward the center point and retains it therein. The butt-hinge is easily aflixed, the parts rigidly held in position by the cap-piece, forming a strong and durable hinge for the various objects to be hung thereby.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The socket cap-piece I), having a projecting lug, b, in combination with a recess, 11 of the socket base-plate, to lock the same firmly and prevent accidental detaching ofcap-piece or pintle, as shown and described.
