'Application meaaune 5, 1923. serial No. 643,523.
, Tb, azzV when a: .may Gamm;
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS RIPPEBEIN, a citizen of theUnited States, and resident of Perth Amboy, 'in thejcounty of Middlesex and Stateof. New Jersey, have invented certain new andl useful Improvements in Display Containers, of which the following is ,a specification.
My invention relate-s to an'fimproved dis# play container wherein goodsmaybe vpacked or storage and shipping and when received by a customer the container maybe 'setA up in such a manneras toy expose the goods. and .whereby the goods may be described by suitable display or advertising located Vupon displayfpanels/ of the container.
. `In'many kinds ofcontainers for goods heretofore made it has been possible 'to pilfer the goods without interference from parts of the container, and one of the objects of my invention is to provide 'a container which, will display 'the kgoods therein and at the same time will secure -a pronounced degree of security to.` the goods in the container, to deter pilfering the same, without materially sacri ual packages'of articles from the container for sale. f x
Other objects of my invention are( to'. afford a vertical view ofthe faces of' the packages ,orl goods within the container so that portions thereof may-be clearly seen.; to provide a compact grouping so that a minimum amount of frontage and depth of package is demanded upon the retailers show case or counter; to'afi'ordan arrangement for securely retaining they principal advertising panel of the container in a definitely erected position, and Vto provide an exceptionally attractive ensemble.
My inyention also comprises novelf.de tails of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims. y t

-containershownin Fig.u.1, embodying a modification.ofl'thefpanel.- hat closesthe Fig. 12 is a rperspective view illustrating Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
My yimproved display container is shown y in substantially box-like form having a front or primarylwall 1, side or intermewall 3 by lmeans of the score lines 5, 6, of l the blank, (Fig. 8), and lthe'back-wall4 is the` score line'. When the blank is folded along said score Ylines into rectangular shape the tab Sat the outer side'of the wall 4 maybe secured `to the wall 3 by means of adhesive, indicatedv at 9. The front wall 1 is provided with an opening 10 through lwhich the goods .or packages 11 maybe displayed. Said goods may be put up in any suitable wa In the accompanying drawmgs I have Villustrated packages at 11, the display container being ,of any suitable dimension to contain any desired number ofpackages,f.portions of which will appear through opening 10. The bottom `ofthe box may be closed by any suitable means. I have shown the sides 2, `3, Vprovidedwith flaps 2, 3*?, to be folded l so i Fig'.` 14 isa perspective view illustrating the easel-like cover and display container inwardly and the back'wall 4 provided with a Hap 4 to be folded upon the flaps 2, 3, said iaps being foldable along the score lines 2, 3b, and 4, respectively, as illustrated in the blank in Fig. 8. The corresponding lower edge of front wall 1 is provided with a tongue 12 hinged to said wall by the score line 12 of the blank adapted to fold over the flap 4, said tongue 12 being shown provided at its sides with lips 12b adapted to enter the. slits 4c in the Hap 4 to retainthe parts 2, 3, 4 and 12 closed at the adjacent end of the container,in a well known manner. The upper portion of the wall is provided with an upper extension in the form of a display panel, indicated at 14, which is adapted to fold over the open end of the container along the score line 15, as shown inthe blank in Fig. 8, whereby the panel is hingedto said wall. The portions 14 are lateral extensions of the panel and also upward extensions of the walls 2 and 3 and are hinged tothe panel at score lines 15 and to walls 2 and 3 by score lines 15. Said portions are scored diagonally at 15 so that they may be folded diagonally. The back wall 4 is provided with a tongue 16 shown having end lips 16. The opening- 10 is provided with a safety panel 17 which is cut from the7blank along the lines 17 and lhinged to the front wall alongthe score line 15, whereby said safety panel may be swung within the container over the packages or goods therein, as indicated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 when the container is to be closed. The blank may 'be cut through at 17 b vso that the safety panel will hinge along the score line at 17 l A detachable protective insert for `the opening 10 in the front wall of the container is indicated at 18. Said insert comprises a main panel substantially corresponding vto the opening 10, said main panel having marginal sections at 18a adapted to be inserted behind the edges at the bottom and sides of opening 10. To permit ready bending of the protective insert- 18 to insert its marginal sections 18 in position behind the edges of front wall 1 at opening 10 said insert may be provided with diagonal yscore lines at 18", as indicated in Figs. 1, 9 and 10. When the insert is located within opening 10, of front wall 1, the packages or oods within the container will'be protecte for storing and shipping.
When the container 1s assembled and thel packages have been placed therein the safety panel 17 may be folded upon the packages and the protective insert 18 will be placed within opening 10 and an up er section 18l of saidv insert that is folda le along the transverse score line 18d, will be folded together with panel 14 and the portions 14 inwardly over the open end of the container, (see Figs. 1 and 2), said portions 14 folding in a triangular manner along the score lines 15 and the fia-p 16 will be folded upon the pane-l 14, the lips 16 of said flaps being tucked under the adjacent angular edges of the portions 14, as indicated in Fie. 1.
FVhen the display container is to be used the flap 16v will be raised, the insert 18 will beV removed, the panel 14 will be extended upwardly with its side portions 14L flaring laterally, and the flap 16'will be laid over the packages, either upon or' under the safety panel 17 to overlie the goods or packages, (Fig. 5),. Any desired advertising or display may be produced upon the panel 14 and its angle portions 14 sov that when the container is o ened an attractive appearance will be a orded,` and at the same time the goods will be exposedthrough the front opening 10 of the container. Since the flap 16 and panel 17 are upon the packages of goods behind the panel 14 they will render af considerable degree of security against pilfering the goods in the container, since it would be necessary for a pilferer to raise the Hap 16 and the panel 17 in order to obtain access to the goodsor packages Within the'container which would entail considerable time and be a deterrent against pilfering lest the pilferer be detected.
In Fig. 10 the section 18 of the insert 18 is of suiiieient extent to extend across the top of the container and is provided with a score line at 18 affording a tuck at 18t that may be folded along 'said score line and tucked between the packages in the container and the back wall 4 thereof. With this construction, the tongue 16 may be dispensed with and the back Wall 4 need have no upward extension.
The relation of the main walls of the container and the manner of securing them together in rectangular form, as before described, may be altered. In the form of container shown 'in'Fig. 6, and in accordance with the blank shown in Fig. 11, the back Wall 4 is connected to the lower front edge of front Wall 1 by means of a bott-om wall 19, the blank having score lines at 20, 21 uniting said Wall to the front Wall 1 and backwall 4 respectively and the sides of back'wall 4 are provided along score lines 5 and 6 with extending sections or wings 4d upon which adhesive may be applied at 22 to'secure the sections 4d to the side Walls 2, 3. The sides 2 and 3 are shown provided with median score lines 23, 24, which extend through the angle Sections 14, andthe bottom section 19 is provided with medianscore line 25 between the score lines^20, 21, vasindicated in the blank of Fig. 11.1v /Vhe'nl the parts of the container are assembled'iin rectangular form, as stated, the container'may be collapsed for shipping or storageby folding the bottom section 19 inwardly along line 25 and folding the sides 2, 3, outwardly along in the lines 23, 24 in the manner indicated` 'n Fig. 6, whereby the container may be delivered rin a smallv compass lfor shippingand may be readily opened outy for use. Score lines 23, 24, 25 serve'iny a manner corresponding to similar score lines set forth in my application filed December 3, 1922, Serial No.4 609,805 for merchandise container. i
Instead ofd providing the safety panel 17 mainly cut out along the line 17a ofthe front wall, the cuts may be provided at `17a and uncut portions left at 17', (Fig.v 7 )f so that the panel 17 will serve as a protection for the contained goods or packages for storage and shipping, and said panel may 'be detached at the parts 17 whenthe goods are to be displayed, said panel `in such @case serving in the nature of the protective insert 18.
The opening 10 in the front wall may be covered with a piece of transparentmaterial, such as gelatine, which 'can be attached to parts of said wall adjacent to the open- .ing by means of adhesive, in a conventional and well known'manner.v` The front wall 'may have any desired number of openings,
such as 10.
Panel 14 or portions 14i or both may be held down in place when the container is in a closed position by providing any of them with lips for gluing on to the back wall, or by providing any of them with a tuck for inserting downward, between the back wall and the containers contents or a tongue extension for linserting into slits in the back wall, or by` any equivalent means. The form of insert shown in Fig. 10 may be used by placing the main part 18 upon closed panel `14, folding the sections 14a thereon, folding part 18 at score line 18d,
over said sections and inserting the tuck 18t v in manner sections 26, 27, the latter may beset up with` section 27 in front of the section 26, and` my improved display container placed upon the section 27 and retained in dlsplay position resting against lsection 26. The sections 26, 27 are similar to corresponding parts shown in my application for display containers filed January 19, 1923, Serial No. 613,578.
' Havingnow described my invention what I claim is:
' 1. A display container having an opening second named opening, said insert compris-y inga main portion substantially correspondingVK to'said opening and-having marginal sections extending'lrom said main portion, said marginal sections being adapted to slide under and lie in contact vwith the parts of said wall'adjacent to the second named opening, said protective insert having a portion adapted tocXtend over the first named opening., v
