5 State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Clips and Shields for Hair-'Waving Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full,

clear,and exact description.

This 'invenltion relates to a combined self locking clip and shield for use in connection with hair Waving and curling implements in which a relatively small number of strands of .hair are tightly wound upon a bobbin vfrom points Aclose to the-scalp and inclosed in a tubular capsule or pad containing borax or other' suita le material thus forming a core -which lis placed within 'a' paper tube of suicient length to extend beyond the free ends of the coil of hair and corresponding end of the bobb'inan'd close to the scalp. The outer end of the tube isthen closed by cotton or equivalent `material and the inner'end adjacent thescalp is compressed tightly around the adjacent portions of the hairafter' which 'heat 'is applied to the assembled parts sutiicient to convert the moisture in the borair pad into steam vapor and w .to liberate the oil from the hair -afterwhich the tubes and bobbins are removed and the hair dressedto impart to it the desired permanent wave.

It is customary to treat several strands of hair in this manner simultaneously or in quick succession iu order to secure uniform results in all of the strands and to prevent the hair from becoming excessively dry and brittle after the removing of the tubes and .-It is highly important therefore, to provide simple and eiiicient means for quickly compressing the end of the tube adjacent -the scalp and holding it in its compressed position to revent the passage of the steam to the sca p and consequently irritation thereof by blistering and while I am-aware that various devices have heretofore been provided for partially effecting a tight compression of the end of the tube adjacent the scalp, the have been more or less inefficient int-'that t ey loose their compression force by loosening and opening'under the pressure of the expanded vapor on the inside of the tube.

In order that the invention may be clearly understood, I have shown a strand Y A of hair coiled around a suitable bobing pad (3- which inrturn is inclosed in a. paper tube -D- extending from' a point near the scalp to some distance beyond the free ends of the coil of hair and hobbin and having its outer end closed by a porous plug -E- of cotton or equivalent material, the end of the tube adjacent the scalp'l being compressed by my .improved clip -1- after which the assembledparts within the tube -D- are heated to convert the moisture of the pad into steam which in turn acts upon the coil ofv hair to liberate the oil therefrom and therebyto .prepare the strand of hair for future treatment to produce the desired 'permanent wave in a manner well known in this art and not necessary to herein further describe for the reason that the method of treating the hair forms no part of myA presentinvention.

The jaw -3- and .jaw section .-G-are provided with inwardly projecting tongues 9 and .9- some distance from the pivot`- -4., the tongue Sl-being provided with -a series of apertures -10- arranged in Lthe point of thetongu vsequence cdncentric with the axis of the pivot '4- whi'le the Vtongue 9"- is provided with an upwardly pressed nib Aor detent -11-, the same distance from the axis of the pivot -4L as the apertures @10- for successively engaging said apertures as the jaws are closed one upon 4the other and locking the jaws in their closed positions.

The walls of the apertures 10 nearest e -9- are substantially fiat and radial to the pivot while the edge of the detent -11- farthest from the pivot of the tongue -9-- is also flat and radial to said pivot for engaging the flat sides of the openings -10- and thereby producing a more effective lock for holding theljaws in Atheir closed positionsl` while at thesaine time permitting the delent -1l to ride freely along the adjacent face of the gral extensions 12- substantially radial to-their' pivot -4- to form handles projecting beyond the tongues -9 and -9- for closing and ,opening the jaws.

The part 7 extends along the tongue and is tensioned to spring'toward the part --6- to 'unpnge the tongue -9- of the jaw^3 between the parts (5- and .-7 .when the jaws are closed and thereby tol more effectively hold said jaws against relative lateral displacement' when closed upon the inner end of the tub -D- for com ressing the same.

T e free endof the jaw section -7- overlies the detent 11 so that when thc apertured tongue.-9 is inserted between the" tongue` -9- and adjacent portion of the jaw section -.-7 the tongue -9- will be pressed flrmlv between the jaw sections 6- and -7-2'1 to hold the detent 1lin interlocking engagement with the registering aperture -10.
