To all whom it may concern:
, UNITE STATES- am I. MAYER, or LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
P GARMENT iiAnenn'.
' Application filed September 29, 1923. Serial No. 665,668.
Be it known that I, MYRTLE I. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of Californ'ia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports or hangers for garments'of the kind-in which a horizontally disposed cros piece -is equipped between its opposite ends with a hook adapted to engage a support and in which the arms of the cross I iece are adapted to engage the neck or s oulder portlon of the garment which it holds. Garment hangers of this kind are commonly used for supporting coats and vests and are especially adapted tos'upport ladies clothing, such as dresses, skirts, shirt waists, and other such garments.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a garment hanger of suchconstruction and so equipped that it may conveniently support ladies skirts, dresses, etc., of different sizes and kinds, and my invention consists in equipping the arms of the cross piece with clamps which are adapted to engage the garment and yieldand properly'hol proved garment hanger showing how it may hanger of slightlfyr ingly hold it in place and which are adjustable to different 1n such manner as to retain them in proper shape.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment supporter equipped with clamps made in accordance with myinvention.
" F'igu different shape. v Figure 3 is a ont elevation of my imbe applied to a ladys garment.
Figure 4 is a detail view, of a device employed for adjustably holding the clamp on the hanger. Q i a Figure 5 is another view of'the same de vice and shows on an enlarged scale the shape of the clamppreferably employed.
The cross pieces A shown inFigure 1 and 2" are-of thensual kind, that shown inFigure" 1 being square in cross section,
cross section. vided with a hook B as usual. Each arm I of the cross piece is provided with a clamp positions on the cross piece garments of various kmds re 2 is'a similar view of a garment cross piece by a coiled spring I) which has its ends connected at d in order to provide a spring ring which surrounds the cross piece. By these devices 1 the clamps may PATENT oi-T cs. 1
C which is pivotallyconnected with the be moved-to any, desired position on the hanger to accommodate garments of different kinds and as the "spring rings D closely fit the arm of. the cross pieceythe clamps may be held securely in position until designedly moved by the user. Each clamp C is I The spring ring D passes through its middle portion; its outer end is formed with a tooth or hook 0 adapted to engage the edge neck portion as indicated in Figure 3, while its inner end is beveled or inclined at e topermit the catch to rock or turn on its axiswhile being applied to a garment.- 1'
It will be observed thatthe clamp has preferably of the' kind shown.
of an opening in the garment such as the a straight flat portion b which rests on the top of the cross piece. This construction prevents the clamp from wabbling or getting out of proper working position, but the springs yield sufficiently to permit the clamp to slide back and forth onthe cross piece and also to'rock thereon-when being applied to a garment or being withdrawn therefrom. i
A hanger provided with clamps of the kind shown can be made at small expense. The'clamps may be sold separately and applied to hangers of usual construction and will serve to hold garments of various kinds and sizes in such manner as to prevent them from slipping out of place. I prefer to provide an adjustable clamp on each arm of the hanger, but one clamp often serves to prevent the garment from slipping from its support.
Garment largely used for domestic purposesand also are used to a large extent in stores of va-. rious kinds and .in establishments.
I claim as my invention:
1. A garment hanger comprising a cross piece, clamps slidable endwise thereon and having. a pivotal movement to and from clamping position and springs which yield-.-
ingly support the clamps on the cross piece hangers of the shown are pressing and cleaning piece and springs which serve the double purpose of yieldingly and pivotally connecting the clamps to the cross 'piece.
3. A garment hanger comprislng a. cross piece, garment-engaging clamps and spring rings slidabl mounted on the cross-piece; said clamps pivotally connected therewith by saidprings.
- 4. A garment hanger comprising a cross piece, a clamp having a tooth or;hook at,
"one end and which is beveled at'its opposite end, and a coiled spring surrounding an arm of the cross piece, extending through the clamp, and serving to yielding-1y and I subscribed my i I pivotally connect the clamp with the cross p'siece.
5. Agarment hanger comprising a cross piece, a clamp having a hook 01' tooth at one end and which: is beveled at the opposite end and v'v'hich has a plain flat surface engaging the cross piece, and a coiled spring ring pivotally connecting the clamp with the cross piece and which is slidably mounted on an arm of the cross piece.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto name. n
MYRTLE I. MAYER.
