UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD FRIEDRICH, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
SHOW-CASE AND FREEZERCOUNTER TOP.
Application led June 6, 1924. Serial No. 718,380.
To all whom t may concern: pended claims, reference being had to the Be it known that I, EDWARD FRIEDRICH, accompanying drawings. in which: 50 a citizen of the United States, residing at Figure l is a` perspective view of a show San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and case top embodying my invention.
5 State of Texas, have invented certain new Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section and useful Improvements in Show-Case and on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
Freezer-Counter Tops, of which the follow- Figure 3 is an inverted plan view ot the 55 ing is a specification. same.
My invention is an improved display top Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section on l for show cases, freezer counters and the like the line 4 4 of Figure 3.
and it has for its objects to provide a new Figure 5 is an enlarged detail section on and usctul means for holding the top glass the line 5 5 ot Figure 3. 60 or bunker top in place without danger of In the drawings, in which like numerals chipping the same or of the same becoming oi reference designate like parts in all the loose. figures. l represents the main frame of the Heretofore it has been a common practicil top which is ot general outline to tit the to fasten the top plates with dowels inlaid particular cabinet desired (usually rec- 65 and in the event of replacement, new top tangular outlinel. the trame having a iiange lates would not tit in correct position; my or bead portion Q to over-lie the side of the lnvention has for another object to overcome counter or case 3 (see dotted lines in Figure this objectionable feature. on which it is placed.
A further object of the invention is to lVhen the vitreous top plate is made of a 70 provide a display top for counters of vaplurality of parts the frame 1 is provided rious kinds, in which the glass projects bewith one or more cross members 4 to overyond the counters frame and is concealed lie the joint or joints between the sections. on the edge b v a moulding that prevents The trame l is covered with felt 5. or other chipping of the edges of the glass. the suitable sound deadening material, and it 75 moulding being spaced from the top trame is on this that the vitreous top plate is laid. Wall to leave a space between the same This top plate may consist of single` glass through which dirt and water which might plate 6 or it may be composed of a number work through between the glass and mouldof plates (i and 7. either or all ot which may ing may pass and fall on the floor clear of be transparent or opaque as desired and they 80 the case, thereby not coming in contact with may be of different thicknesses if desired. the felt under the glass as is the case in those In the drawings I have shown, for purtops now commonly employed having rabbet poses of illustration. the top as having a joints. top plate composed of a transparent section Again it is an object of my invention to 6 and an opaque section 7. the former being 85 provide an improved joint between the vitglass and the latter being opaque vitreous reous sections of the top by the use of a material and of a greater thickness than the rubber gasket and cement which secures the former. The opposing edges of the plate joint for expansion and contraction, and is sections 6 and 7 are spaced a short distance at the same time waterproof. apart and this space is filled with a rubber lith other objects in view which willbe apgasket 9 that is cemented at 10-10 to the parent to those skilled in the art the invention plate sections 6 and 7 respectively by any also resides in those novel details of construcsuitable cement. The opposing edges of the tion, combination and arrangement of parts, plate sections 6 and 7, as before intimated,
all of which will be first fully described, lie over the cross bar 4 of the frame l and 95 then be specifically pointed out in the ap- -are supported thereby.
The combined area of the vitreous top plates is in excess ot' the area of the top frame 1 so that the outer edges of the top plates project beyond the outer edges of the trame 1 and leave a space 11 between the frame 1 and the moulding l2 which surrounds the frame 1 and the outer edge of the top plate and is held in pressure contact with the outer edge ot the top plate by suitable screws 13 that pass through the moulding into the traine 1. suitable rings or washers 14 being carried by the screws in the space 11 as best shown in Figure 4.
From the foreogoing description, taken in connection with thc accompanying drawings, it will be observed that in order to replace the top plates 6, 7, it. is only necessary to loosen the several screws 13 and litt the plate otl?. Then after replacing the same the screws may be tightened and the moulding 12 may again be clamped to the edge of the plate and thereby hold the plate tightly in position on the frame 1.
It will also be observed that by reason of the overhang of the plates and the provision of the space 11 surrounding the trame 1 any dust or water that may work between the edge of the top plates 6 and 7 and the moulding 12 and pass through the space 11 and drop on the floor and will not work into contact with the Jfelt 5.
Furthermore by providing the rubber gasket 9 cemented to the. opposing edges ot the plate sections 6 and 7 dirt and water will not pass therebetween and expansion and contraction will be compensated for in this joint.
The Whole top then. it will be seen. is waterproof and can be used without fear ot the moisture passing through and into the interior of the cabinet 3.
While I have shown the top as having a plurality of plate sections 6 and 7 it is obvious that the number of sections from one up will depend upon the size of the top and the nature ot the cabinet over which it is to be placed, and I do not wish to be restricted in this application to any particular number of plate sections.

4. A display top comprising a top frame. a top plate laid on said frame, the area ot which plate exceeds that of said frame, a moulding around the edges of said plate and spaced from said frame. and means for holding said moulding to said frame and in pressure Contact with the outer edges of said top plate.
5. A display top comprising a top frame, a, vitreous top plate laid on said frame, the area of which plate exceeds that of said trame. said plate comprising a` transparent and an opaque section held edge to edge but spaced apartK and a rubber gasket filling the space between the opposing edges. a moulding around the edges of said plate and spaced trom said frame. and means for holding said moulding to said frame and in pressure Contact with the outer edges of said top plate.
6. A display top comprising a top frame. a vitreous top plate laid on said frame. the area ot' which plate exceeds that of said frame. a moulding around the edges of said plate and spaced from said frame. means for holding said moulding to said frame and in pressure contact with the outer edges of said top plate. and spacer washers located betwcen said top frame and said moulding.
7. A display top comprising a top frame, having outer flanges to fit over a cabinet on which it may be placed. a felt pad located on the top surface of said top frame. a top plate laid on said pad and extended beyond the outer edges of said top frame, a moulding located around said top frame and spaced therefrom and adapted to be held in engagement with the outer edges of said top plate.-
and fastening devices for maintaining said moulding on said top frame and holding the same in pressure contact with the edges of said top plate.
8. A display top comprising a top frame, having outer flanges to fit over a cabinet. on which it may be placed, a felt pad located on the top surface of said top frame, a top plate laid on said pad and extended beyond the outer edges of said top frame, a moulding located around said top frame and 10 spaced therefrom and adapted to be held in engagement with the outer edges of said top plate, fastening devices for maintaining said moulding on said top frame and holding the same in pressure Contact with the edges of said top plate, said fastening devices comprising screws passing through said moulding into said top frame, and spacer elements on said screws between said moulding and said top frame.
