Description

Feb. 3, 1925. 1,524,754
W. C. SENNETT MUD GUARD BRACE Filed May 31, 1924 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
MUD-GUARD BRACE.
Application filed May 31, 1924. Serial No. 717,093. 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVALTER C. SENNnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Mud-Guard Brace, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fender braces, and aims to provide a novel form of fender brace which may be operated to move the fenders on which the brace is positioned, to their normal positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be locked against movement when positioned to insure against rattling of the fenders and fender brace.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fender brace which may be adjusted for positioning on fenders of various distances apart.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view disclosing fenders of a motor vehicle as equipped with a fender brace constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the fender brace.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the fender brace.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view disclosing the operating lever for drawing the rods forming the fender brace to their active positions.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the operating lever.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes rods 5 and 6, each of which being provided with a right angled end portion 7 terminating in a finger 8.
Cooperating with each rod is a fender embracing arm 9 formed with an inwardly extended end portion 10 adapted to fit over the usual flange of a fender to restrict movement of the arm 9 with respect to the fender. The rod 6 is provided with an offset portion 11 and an inwardly extended end portion 12, which end portion 12 is adapted to be positioned in one of the openings 13 of the lever 14. A right angled end 15 is provided on the rod 5 and is also designed for positioning in one of the openings 13 in a manner as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing. Thus it will be seen that when the member 14 is moved to a position as shown by Figure2 of the drawing, the arms will be moved towards each other to draw the fenders connected therewith upwardly or to their normal positions. I
The lever 14 is provided with a right angled extremity 16 formed with a cut out portion 17 adapted to fit over the rod 6, adjacent to the offset portion 11 thereof to lock the lever 14 against movement after it has been moved to its active position.
The fingers 8 of the rods 5 and 6 fit under the inner flanges of adjacent fenders and cooperate with the fender engaging arms 9 for gripping the fenders and hold the rods 5 and 6 to the fenders.
A suitable opening indicated at 15 is formed in the member 14, the opening being arranged so that when the member 14 is moved to a locking position, a bolt or other securing device positioned in the opening will engage the rod falling opposite the opening to lock the member 14 in its posi tions of adjustment.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if it is desired to move the rods 5 and 6 with respect to the lever 14 toadjust the rods to adapt them for use in connection with fenders, closer together, it is only nec essary to move the end portions 12 and 15 to positions in the openings 13 so that movement of the lever 14 will produce a greater movement of the rods 5 and 6 towards each other.
I claim In a device of the character described, a pair of'rods having right angled ends, fender embracing members carried by the rode, a lever including a wide member having a plurality of openings arranged in spaced relation with each other, the openings being arnangedin a curved line and adapted to receive the inner right angled ends of the rods, said wide member having one end thereof bent at right angles and formed with a cut out portion to -receive a portion of one of the rods to lock the member against movement, and said Wide member having an opening adjacent to its right angled end to accommodate a lock- 8 ing member to lock the Wide member against movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
W'ALTER C. SENNETT. Witnesses RUTH E. ALLEN, HARRY L. CRAM.
