To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthatl, Lawson citizen of the United States, and resident of Killdeer, in the county of Dunn and State of North Dakotmhaveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracing Devices, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates'to' bracing devices especially adapted for use on Ford automo- Briefly stated an important object of this invention is to provide reliable means for bracing the front cross member of the frame of a Ford car whichcross member usually breaks intermediate its ends as a result of an excessive strain.
Further the invention forming the. subject matter of this application aims to provide a bracing. device of the character specified in which the same is provided with-simple means whereby it may be attached to a Ford car without substantially altering the construction of the vehicle or marring the appearance of the same.
Also the improved bracing device forms a means for guarding the radiator.
A further object is to provide a bracing device of the character specified which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent from the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi-v ment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the front cross member of the frame 6 of a motor vehicle, which in this case is a Ford. As illustrated in Figure 1 the front cross member 5 has its ends extended up wardly so as to provide a lower intermediate portion 7 which usually breaks as a result of strain or continued and excessive vibration.

As illustrated in Figure 3 each bracket is formed from a single length of metal bent intermediate its ends as indicated at 16 to provide inner and outer arms 17 and 18 re spectlvely, the outer arm 17 having its forward portion apertured as indicated at 19 p In carrying out the invention a truss rod 26 is extended through aligned openings in the arms 17 and 18 of thebrackets and the nuts 24 are subsequently applied so as to brace the end portions of the cross member 5. This prevents the end portions of the end member 5 from bending downwardly and breaking the cross member at the point 7.
W th reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accon1panying drawing it will be seen that the improved brace may be conveniently applied to al motor vehicle without substantially altering the construction of the same and without in any way marring the appearance of the vehicle. With the reference to Figure 3 it will be observed that the bearing lug 20 of each bracket extends from the intermediate por-. tion of the bracket and contacts with the frontendof the frame so as to effectively prevent bending of the bracket as a result of extreme tightening of the nut 24:.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is r c i 1; A bracing device forthe front cross member of a vehicle frame comprising a pair of brackets, each of which is formed to lirnitthe inward movement of the bear ings, anda rod extending through said pairs of arms and having fastening nuts mounted thereon, said bearing lugs being extended from the intermediate portions oi the brackets.
2. In combination with a vehicle frame having a cross member bent intermediate its ends, of a pair of brackets arranged at the ends of said cross member and each being formed from a length of metal bent intermediate its ends to provide inner and outer arms, the inner arms of the brackets being bent intermediate their ends to provide bearing lugs adapted to flatly contact With the forward end of the "frame, the outer arms of the brackets being secured to the frame, the outer portions of said arms being formed with aligned openings, and a tie rod extending through said openings.
