lt is :i general object of the invention to provide u bumper which will be capable oi' iideouutely protecting the rear :ind the cor nersoi vehicles of this type. Further and more limited objects of the invention will :ippenr liereinuliter and will be realized 1n and through the combinations ot elements embodied fin. the claims hereto annexed.`
ln the drawings, lig. l represents e side elevation olE the rear portion of e vehicle of the type referred to, buying my invention applied thereto; lzlig. 2, n sectional plan View ot' the rear portion of such vehicle;
Fig. 3, e rear end elevation of the vehicle shown in Fig. 1,' Fig. 4, e detail 1n perspective showing the end-olf the rear bumper and the parte of the corner guard cooperating therewith; und Fig. 5, :i sectional detail eorrespoiuling to the line 5-5 of Fie'. l. l
Describing; the perle by reference cher- .ueters, l represents lhe reni' end of :i veliicle olt the bus type, 2 the rear wheels thereof, und 8 one ol1 the rear fenders. 4, 4l denote the rear portions ot :i pair of side members, and 5 the rear cross member connec-ting the ends of the side members. 6 denotes e skirt, or metal sheathing, below the body l andl enclosing rear portions of the members l und the cross member 5, being .spaced 'from the Llorn'ier members by means of blocks 'i'. j
The complete rear bumper and corner guard construction comprises :L ehnnneled v bumper bor 8 which is mounted on the rear ends of short fosts 9" )ro'ectine' from the lr w rear member 5 through the rear part et the skirt 6. The bumper member 8 is preferebiy-of the seme length es the Cross member 5, extending nearly es i'ur es the side pon tions 6 of the skirt 6. Adjacent each end, the web of the member 8 is eut away, as indicated et 8 (Fig. l), and 'the flanges 8b,
lwhich extend beyond the web, are provided with vertically aligned apertures 8c. 9 denotes n' pair of bolts, each mounted in the liti .The bers l0 end l2 extend forwardly/n suhcient distance to protectv the corners of the Vehicle body., Euch is provided, at its -front end with an eye', indicated et 1()b end 12b, respectively, the eyes and the Jfront ends of the bers being secured to the bur ll by means ot' u bolt 14 extending'through the ,eyes 10b and l2 and througha, pair or clamping members lo and i6, having seets 15a and 16, respectively, lor the yupper und the lower edge of the bur ll. f lhe bolts ll und 14: will be provided with nuts' 9 und l/l, respectively.
ly the construction disclosed herein, lthe mejor portion oi' the roer end of the vehicle will be protected by the channeled bumper bur 8; the corners by the resilient triple-bar bumpers formed by the bers 0, ll and l2; while the sides of the skirts '6 beyond the corners will be protected by the single b urs ll. i
Having thus described what l chiiln is: v
