To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Hose Reels, of which the following is va specification.
This invention relates to new and usefu improvements in hose reels and more particularly to the type designed to be associ ated with a liquid supply device in a manner to control the supply of liquid to the hose upon rotation of the reel. i
The principal object of this invention is to provide a device of the above nature wherein means are provided whereby liquid will be automatically admitted to the hose only after it has been almost entirely unwound from the reel. A
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein means are provided to assure quick and positive operation of the valve associated therewith.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device as above outlined which is of s'impleyet strong and durable construction the parts of which are few and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring to the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates an outlet nozzle of a water line, such for instance as the hose houses. The outer end of this nozzle is exteriorly screw threaded in the well. known manner andcon'sequently my hose reel-may be readily attached bodily thereto. My improved reel includes what may be termed a liquid supply device which consists of a valve chamber 6. This valve chamber assumes the form of a hollow cylindrical member 7 having its outer end equipped with a valve seat 8. The. outer end of the cylindrical member 7- is. provided with an annular outwardly projecting flange 9, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The inner walls of the cylindrical member 7 are provided with a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinally. extended ways 10, which may assume the form of grooves as illustrated. The inner open end of the member 7 is closed by the closed flanged portion of an interiorly screw threaded collar 12. This collar is threaded upon the nozzle 5 so that the liquid therefrom may pass to the member 7. The flange 11 is preferably removably secured tothe inner end of the member7 by bolts 13 or any other suitable means.
The hose reel 14 consists of a hollow body ha-vins'r its outer end .15 closed and its inner end open to receive therein the cylindrical member 7 inorder to be rotatably mounted, it being notedthat the periphery of the flange 9 of this lmemb'er engages the inner circular walls of the reel. The inner end of the reel is provided with an 'annulanreguide ce's's' intowhich'fits a ring like metallic plate 16 and a similar packing 17. It will be noted that the ring 16 fits against" the bottom of the annular recess just mentioned a'nd' the flange 9 ofth'e cylindrical member 7. In order to prevent displacement ofthe reel from the member 7, a ring like member 18 fits over' the cylindrical member 7 and bolted to the inner end of the reel 14. In this manner, it will be obvious that long tudin'al ovement of e the reel upon the member 7 is prevented but that the reel may freely rotate upon the member 7 which in.

A valve 19 is provided for the s'eat' 8 and opens inwardly of the member 7.
This valve 19 is provided with a pair of laterally projecting guides or arms 20 which are adapted to ride in the guide ways 10 r of the member 7 and thereby prevent rotation of the valve. The valve is provided with a screw stem which extends axially and longitudinally and through the hollow V reel 1%..

The means I provide for automatically controlling the valve primarily consists of a bar or member 22 threadedly mounted upon the screw valve stem and having its ends, as most clearly seen in Figure 3, provided with notches or grooves 23 adapted for sliding engagement with guideways in the These guideways assume the form of oppositely disposed. longitudinally extending ribs 2 l formed upon the inner wall of the reel, it beingnoted that these ribs extend from the closed end of the reel to points spaced inwardly from the inner end of the reel so that they may abut the outer face of the .fiange .9 and prevent the reel from moving inwardly upon the cylindrical member 7.
The relative outer face of the member 22 is provided with a pair of wedge or cam shaped lugs 25 which are adapted for cooperation with a similar pair of lugs 26 formed upon .the relative inner face of an abutment disc 27.. This disc is provided with a square opening by which it is mounted upon a square. portion of the valve stem 21 adjacent the free end thereof whereby the disc may abut the inner surface of the closed end of the reel.
As seen in Figures 1 and 3, the periphery of the reel is equipped with an outwardly projectingthreaded nozzle 28 whereby the coupling of the hose may be connected there with. After the hose is once attached to the reel, it may remain so attached, it being unnecessary with the present invention to attach the hose every timefits use is desired.
In order to provide means for preventing lateral displacement of the hose from the reel when wound thereon and to form. guide means for assisting in the proper placement of the hose upon the reel, a pair of flanges 29 are provided for opposite ends of the reel. In the present instance, these flanges each consist of a resilient split band 30 having its free ends flanged as at 31 and shown' in Figure 1, whereby a bolt may be associated with these ends for drawing them together to cause the band to tightly grip the reel.
A pair of annular grooves 32 are provided in the periphery of the reel to receive these resilient bands 30 whereby to prevent any movement of the bands with respect to the reel. A plurality of spokes 33 project from each band 30 and the outer ends of these spokes 30 are fastened to rela tively large rings or bands 34.. V
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that when the liquid supply device is attached to the water line nozzle 5, that the water or liquid will be promptly admitted into the cylindrical member. 7 and will be prevented from escaping therefrom by grasped by the attendant and pulled so as to unwind the hose from the reel. The normal position of the member 22 is spaced from the forward end of the reel and during rotation of the latter, the member 22 will be caused to rotate with the reel and move longitudinally thereof toward the member 2?. About the time the hose has been on tirely unwound from the reel, the member will have'about reached the member 27 so that the cam lugs 25 and 26 will abut with one another to cause the threaded stem 21 to move longitudinally of the reel and inwardly toward the liquid supply device 6. This movement .of the stem will of course cause similar movement of the valve 19 against the pressure of the water, thereby permitting the water to flow from the liquid supply device into the hollow reel 14; and then. throughthe nozzle28 of the reel into the hose. Should it be desired to cut oi the water from the hose, thereel is simply given a partial rearward turn to cause disengagement of the cam lugs 25 and 26 which 'will consequently permit of free longitudinal movement of the valve stem, it being device 6 exerts a pressure upon the valve 19, and consequently when this relation of parts has been assumed the valve 19 will be com pelled to close and thereby out OK the supply water to the reel 14. i
. 7 It will be appreciated that this device may be used toadvantage in apartment houses, department stores, schools and like places where it is desirable to maintain the hose attached to the supply device ready for immediate use in case of fires. It is to be particularly remembered that the valve 19 will not be caused to open until the hose is practically unwound from the reel and that the supply of water to the hose may be. cut off by simply turning the reel a part of a, revolution. It is also to be understood that the member 27 may be dispensed with and suitable cam surfaces provided upon. the inner surfaces of the end 15 of the reel. Due to the particular.construction and relationship of the parts, it will be obvious that the device may be readily dissembled when repair to the various parts is necessary.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts materials, dimensions, etc. as may. proveexpedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. The combination with a liquid supply device; comprising a cylindrical hollow member having an outwardly projecting flange, a valve associated with said member; of a rotatable liquid receiving hose reel mounted upon said member, means carried by said reel for engagement with one side of the flange, means within said reel for actuating said valve, and guide means for said last mentioned means abutting the flange of said member for preventing inward movement thereof.
2. The combination with a liquid supply device comprising a cylindrical hollow member having an outwardly projecting flange, a valve associated with said member, diametrically opposed guideways formed with in said cylindrical hollow member, arms carried by said valve member and adapted to be received within said diametrically op-v means within said reel for actuating said valve, whereby sald valve is unseated at a.
