To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWARD CLIFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hose-reels, and particularly to improvements in hose-reels of the character employed in buildings having a fixed water-supply apparatus, to which the hose or the-reel may be permanently applied.
In the embodiment of my invention herein presented the reel proper is connected to the stem of the valve controlling the flow of water, and said valve is opened by the unwindautomatically. turned on and is within the hose as soon as the latter can be used. When fully unwound, the hose is entirely free of the reel and is simply left connected with the exposed Water-supply apparatus. After the use of the hose in extinguishing a fire the reverse motion of the reel without regard to the hose will close the valve in the watersupply pipe and thereafter at any convenient time by disconnecting the reel from the valvestem, but leaving said reel to turn freely around said stem or upon a sleeve inclosing said stem, the hose may be readily rewound upon the reel without affecting the valve.
The invention willbe fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through a reeland water-supply apparatus embodying the invention, the valve controlling the flow of water being shown in its closed position and the hose being omitted from the water-supply pipe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a reel and hose embracing the invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached side elevation of a portion of the reel and Fig; 4. is an edge view showing the reel mounted at an angle of forty-five indicated in Fig. 1.

which is composed of the hub B and disks 0 O, the latter being secured to the flanges E of said hub by means of the bolts E, upon which the hose F is wound, as more clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and at. The hub Bis of cast metal and contains the circular hollow bore G to receive the sleeve II, which incloses the valve-stem I and is connected with the valve-casing J, the latter being supported upon the water-supply pipe K. The hub B is cast with the radial end flanges D and with the webs L, which connect the said flanges Within the line of the bolts E, as indicated in Fig. 1. The plates or disks 0 C have cen tral apertures, as shown, the disk nearest to the'valve-casing- J having its central aperture of greater diameter than the bore G of said hub B, while the disk 0 at the outer side of the reel has its central aperture of a diameter adapted to snugly receive the outer end of the said hub 13. The outer end of the hub B has the inwardly-projecting annular flange M, which is utilized, as hereinafter described, for fastening the reel A and sleeve R together, so that the movement of the reel turning on the sleeve II will effect the longitudinal movement of the valve-stem I.
The valve-casing J, the water-pipe K, and the valve N are of well-known form, said valve-casing, as usual, receiving the sleeve II and being provided with the nozzle O,to which the hose F is attached. The sleeve H at one portion has a bore which is polygonal in crosssection to en gage the polygonal portion of the valve-stem I, and the bore of said sleeve H at its other portion is circular in cross-section to receive and permit the revolving therein of the inner end of the sleeve R, which, as shown in Fig. 1, is internally threaded and receives the exterior thread formed onthe valvestem I. The sleeve R is keyed by means of the pins S within the sleeve H, the purpose of the pins being merely to prevent the sleeve R from traveling outward from the sleeve 1-1 when said sleeve R is being revolved under the action of the reel A. Thesleeve R has within the bore G of the hub B the annular flange T, whicln'as' shown in Fig. 1, is at the inner side ofthe' flange M, formed on the reel, and the outer end of the sleeve R is externally threaded to-receive the clamping-nut V and'jam-nut W. When the parts are in the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve R is connected with the reel A by means of the pressure exerted on the flange M by the nut V'and flange T, and under such condition the sleeve R will freely revolve with the reel A and by means of its internal thread effect the longitudinal movement of the valve-stem I and valve N, said stem I being prevented from rotating by the polygonal form of the bore of the sleeved? and the corresponding form of the polygonal portion of said valve-stem. Thus upon the rotation of the reel A, when the parts are in the condition shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve that the flange M may be omitted and the gether.

The hose F is at one end provided with the usual nozzle to and atits other end is coupled to the nozzle 0, forrninga part of the permanent water-supply apparatus. In Winding the hose upon the reel, one end of the hose being coupled to the nozzle 0, the hose at about its center will be folded upon a cylinder or core of the kind shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 585,861, granted to myself July 6, 1897, and the said cylinder or core will be placed within-one of the spaces between the webs L of the hub B,
and thereupon the hose will be wound upon the bolts I in double layers, the dischargenozzle a being left in close proximity to the reel A. The hose F will preferably be wound upon the reel A when the latter is upon the sleeve H and the nut V is loosened from the outer disk 0, in which condition the reel A is free to'be revolved in either direction without afiecting the valve-stem I. The hose be ing wound upon the reel A, the latter will be secured to the sleeve R by the tightening of the nut V against the inwardly-extending flange M of the reel, and upon this being done the. reel may be left until occasion shall arise requiring its use.
In the employment of the apparatus for the extinguishing of a fire the attendant will seize thenozzle a and carry the same toward the fire, this action of pulling on the hose causing the reel to unwind the hose and at the same time to effect, through the sleeve R, the outward movement of the Valve-stem I and valve N, whereby the water from the pipe K may pass through the nozzle 0 into the hose F. The hose will be drawn from the reel until all of the hose has been released therefrom and is left hanging from the nozzle 0 free of the reel. After the fire has been extinguished the valve N, without regard to the hose, will be closed by causing a reverse rotation of the reel A upon the sleeve 11, and after the valve 1 N has been closed the hose F may be restored to the reel A. reel A it will first be necessary to loosen the In restoring the hose to the become restored to a condition and position in which it may be left for further use. The sleeve R is directly on and carried by the valve-stem, and thus the means for connecting the reel with the valve-stem to operate the latter are wholly independent of the reel.
The reel made the subject of this application is shown in Fig. 1 upon a horizontal sleeve H and valve-stem I, as usual; but in Fig. 4 the said reel is shown set at an angle of forty-five degrees, and this feature forms a part of the present invention. WVhen the reel A is upon a horizontal sleeve, as shown in Fig. 1, it is more or less inconvenient to draw the hose, except in two directions, one being at each side of the longitudinal center of the valvestem; butwhen the reel is mounted at or about at an angle of forty-five de grees, as shown in Fig. 1, the hose may be conveniently drawn notonly in the two directions at opposite sides of the valve-stem, but also in a substantially forward direction, or

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the Water-supply apparatus having the-valve, projecting valvestem and exposed hose-attaching nozzle, the reel adapted to operate said stem, means connecting the reel with said stem to operate the same and the hose at one end connected with said exposed nozzle and thence, while doubled at about its center, wound upon the said reel,
. the said reel and the said valve-stem being arranged at an angle of about forty-five degrees; substantially as and for the purposes set. forth.
- 2. In combination with water-supply app'aratus having a tubular sleeve, a valve and a valve-stem projecting into said sleeve, the reel mounted to revolve upon said sleeve,
means connecting said reel with the valve stem for the purpose of operating the valve from the reel, and hose suitably wound upon the reel, said valve-stem, said sleeve and said reel being arranged at an angle of about fortyfive degrees; substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with water-supply apparatus having a stationary sleeve, a valve and a valve-stem projecting through said sleeve, the reel mounted to turn axially upon said sleeve, the revoluble sleeve having a threaded bore to receive the threaded portion of the valve-stem, and means for connecting said revoluble sleeve to thereel; substantially as set forth.
4.. In combination with water-supply apparatus having a sleeve, a valve and a valvestem projecting through said sleeve, a reel mounted to turn axially upon said sleeve, the revoluble sleeve having a threaded bore to receive the valve-stem and provided with the flange, the nut for connecting said flange to the reel so that said reel and said sleeve B may revolve together, means for preventing said revoluble sleeve from traveling longitudinally, and hose suitably wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
5. Water-supply apparatus having a sleeve, a valve and a valve-stem projecting through said sleeve, said valve-stem having a threaded portion and a polygonal portion and said sleeve having a polygonal bore to engage the polygonal portion of said valve-stem, combined with the reel mounted to turn axially upon said sleeve, the threaded sleeve mount,-
ed to revolve axially on and receiving the threaded portion of said valve-stem, means fordetachably connecting said threaded sleeve to the reel in order that said reel and sleeve may revolve together, and hose suitably wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with Water-supply apparatus having a sleeve, a Valve and a valvestem projecting into said sleeve, a hose-reel mounted to turn axially on said sleeve, means for connecting said reel to said stem for operating the latter and the valve, and means for preventing said stem fromturning axially during its longitudinal movement; substantially as set forth.
