MACHINE EUR SEPARA'JTING- FILAMENT FROM BAGASSE.
Application filed June 27, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERGIO BRAi iA, a citizen of the United Mexican States, residing at Merida, State of Yucatan, Mexico, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Machines for Separating Filament from Bagasse, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for separating from the sap the short filament contained in henequen bagasse, which is now considered a waste from the fiber extracting treatment of henequen aves.
The object of the invention is to separate this short filament, which heretofore was wasted, in order to utilize it in the manufacture of pulp and paper.
In the attached drawing:
Fig. l is a vertical longitudinal cross section of the machine.
l ig. 2 is an end view of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section showing the arrangement of the rollers, and
Fig. l: is a top vow of the machine.
The machine comprises a frame of two standards (1) between which a curved cooperating support (2) is attached. In said standards a shaft (3) is mounted having on one end a transmission pulley and on the middle portion a drum (5) is attached with knives on the periphery. in the opposite end of shaft is attached. a pinion (7) which engages with the gear wheel (8) attached to the pinion (9) which in turn is engaged by gear wheel (LO) fixed on the shaft (11). This shaft (ll) also carries a small gear wheel (12) engaged by gear mounted on the shaft (lat), which on its opposite end carries a gear (1.5) engaged. by gear (1(3) fastened on shaft (17).
In the standards (1) are seen the adjusting screws (18) having spirals (l9) and (20) for graduating the pressure on the fluted rollers and (22) which cooperate with the fluted rollers and There is also seen a gear and a gear (26) while on the shaft (14) is mounted a fluted roller (27 onto which. the bagasse is fed.
On the back of the machine and beneath it is a sifting conveyor (28) made of perforated material stretched on thechains (29) and engaged by the cog wheels (30) and (31).
Serial No. 571,168.
The machine operates as follows:
By an incline not shown, the bagasse is dropped on the front roller (27), which on revolving in the direction indicated by the arrow will discharge to the roller (23) against which the roller 21) presses and as the bagasse advances it passes between the rollers (24) and (22) being then delivered to the curved support (2) which presents the bagasse to the scraping action of the revolving knives (6).
The curved support (2) unloads to the conveyor and sifter (28), and as the rollers (21) and (22) are adjustable, they may be set so that the bagasse is caught between the rollers (21) and and advanced towards the first pair of upper and lower rollers, then to the next pair of rollers (22) and (2d) and from them to the curved support, upon which the filament is combed by the serrated knives of the rapidly revolving drum (5), and like a fine sprinkling the filament and the sap or liquid portion of the bagasse are expelled from the curv d support, falling upon the endless conveyor and sifter, so that due to the nature of the filament and the sap, this last will precipitate through the sifter, while the filament is discharged where the conveyor and sifter turns down over the cog-wheel.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A machine for separating filament comprising a pair of frame members; a curved support connecting said members together; a feeding roller rotatably mounted. in said frame members; cooperating pairs of rollers rotatably mounted in said frame members, one roller of each pair being adjustable; a drum having a series of knives thereon mounted in said frame members, the curvature described by the edges of said knives being adapted to cooperate with. the curvature of said support to beat the material fed therbetween. from said rollers; a combined conveyor and sifter directly under said drum adapted to receive the material from the support and knives; and means for rotating said rollers and drum.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
snneio BRANA.
