Applicationled June 1.1,
"Be it known that'I, ANNA RflVoLvEairoN, a citizen of the United S ates, residing at Los Angeles, in the countyf Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which thefollowin'g is a Speciica'tion.-
This inventici relates to needles, and particularly to a Aneedle having hook ends, and whichV needle is adaptai le for drop stitch work in the repairing of silk hosiery and the like. i
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of this character which is simple of construction, easy to use and which performs thel function required of it neatly and rapidly.
With the above and other objects in view, theinvention consists in the novel and useful provision, Aformation, construction, association and relative arrangement of the elements of the needle, all as shown in one embodiment of the accompanying drawings, described generally, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In'the drawings:
Fi re 1 is a view illustrating hosiery in whic there is a rum Figure 2 is a side view showing the improved needle, the same being on an enlalged scale; i
-igure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view show1ng-use,'of the needle in repairing the run in the hosiery shown in Figure 1';
Figure 4 is a cross section.; on the -line 1 -4 of Figure 2; and
Figures 5 to l0 inclusive illustrate the use ofA the device in repairing a run in hose, such as shown in Figure 1.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the sa me reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawings, the hosiery of Figurel is designated by A, and in which hosiery it will be noted that there is a run at the point marked 41, in which the woof threads have become separated from the warp threads, wlth .usual appearance ol sheds. The present .device is particularly adaptable for repairing runs and said device is designated by B, which device B comprises a needlehaving a uniformly tapering cross section from a. point of maximum diameter shown at 2, and said cross section is circular, as shown in Figure 4. The needle uniformly tapers from the point of maxlmum eross= 1923. serial no.. 644,758.
sectional areas, namely, the point 2, downwardly to the neck portions 3 and 4 of two hooks 5 and 6, said hooks being reversed, as shown in Figure 2.
The operation. uses and advantages of the device are as follows:
Referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that there is a short loop 7 at the bottom of the run in the hosiery. This loop 7 is' illus- Vtrated in Figure We first slip or pass.
say the hoolr through this loop and pull upwardly on the hook so as to stretch the loopor distend it slightly, whereupon the needle is passed straight downwardly through this loop and the hook (i is moved to engage the warp thread 8, as shownzin Figure 6. The needle now retreats brin ing the bight of the thread 8 with 1t through the loop 7 and thus forming a second loop; this being shown in Figure 8, the catching of the thread 8 being shown inl Figure 7. In Figures 7 and 8 it is noted that the needle is revolved to the right in the drawing of the thread 8 through the loop 7. The needle is now slipped through the loop formed by the thread 8 and in doing so the loop is forced to slide over the uniformly tapering body of the needle, and this distends the loop slightly. The needle now assumes the position shown in Figure 9 and the hook 5 which is reversed from the hook 6,' is ready to engage the next Woofthread 9, which engagement .is shown in Figure 10 at 10. The operation is then repeated, commencing from the showing-in Figure 6 on.
It is evident frointhis brief description that the needle is continuously revolved and that a series of loops are formed, one loop passing through a previously formed loop to form a connected series of loops. The
` needle by having a uniformly tapered cross section acts to distend the loop whenthesaid loop is slid over the needle, and so that the`l next woef thread is easily drawn through said loop to form anotheuloop and so on'.
Figure 2 illustrates a series of woef,
ilo
run in silk hosery, lso that it assumes its" former appearance, and the present needle by having a reverse hook only requires that an bperator continuously turn the needle with the cast loop of-eaeh ascending Woof 10 thread slipped over the needle und to close' up the shed between -the Woof threads.
Having' thus disclosed my invention, I
claim and 'desireto secure by Letters Pat? ent. g l 15 As a new article of manufacture adapted to pick` upudropstitches in hosiery, includf ing a member provided with means for en- .'gagng a first Woof thread, and Va. further member.. for engaging a second Woof thread upon a turning of such member to loop the first Woof thread with the second Woof thread.
i In testimony whereof, I'have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two 'subscribing witnesses.
