Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM II. PAnur, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of llfisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following 1s a specihcation.

My invention has reference .more particularly to a chair of the type in which the seat and back and supporting legs fold together in a fiat compact structure` The principal objects of my invention are to provide an improved folding chair; to simplify and improve the connections whereby the chair back and seat are mounted on the side supports; to afford improved mechanism for effecting a simultaneous folding and unfolding of the chair seat and leg support; and in general to produce a folding chair which is better constructed and more satisfactory than chairs of this character heretofore provided.

On the drawings, the reference numerals 1 indicate spaced legs or side supports which are extended upwardly to serve as back posts, and have their upper ends connected together by a strip 2. A chair seat 3 is positioned between the supports 1 and provided at each side with a hanger comprising an elongated plate al. which is secured to the edge of the seat 3 and has an offset ear 5 intermediate of its ends which is pivoted to the adjacent support 1 as indicated at 6. Extending upwardly from a point adjacent the rear edge of the seat 3 is the chair back 7 which has a bracket 8 selured to t-he lower end of each side thereof, and formed with a forwardly curved eX- tremity which is pivoted to the rear end of the corresponding plate f1, the curvature of the bracket 8 being suiiicient to offset the pivotal connection 9 of the chair seat with the back so that the seat and back fold close together in parallel relation as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.

of the chair back with the seat 3 is eccentrically disposed from the pivot 6 of the seat, a sliding connection is required between the upper end of the chair back and the posts 1. To afford such connection, a pin 10 is secured to and extends inwardly from each post 1 and has the inner end thereof engaged in a` slot 11 formed in the edge ofthe chair back 7, Said pin being formed with an enlarged intermediate portion 12 which serves as a spacer to hold the chair back and sideA supports 1 in the proper separated relation. j

Extending between the side members 1 below thefseat 3 is a rung 13 which has the ends secured to the members 1. A pair of leg supports 14 are pivotedl intermediate of their ends on the reduced extremities of the rung 13, beingconnected together by the rungs 15 and adapted to open outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the seat 3 rests upon the upper extremities thereof, and these leg supports are also adapted to fold in between the side members 1 as shown in Fig. 2.

For effecting a simultaneous folding and unfolding of the seat- 3 and leg supports 1-1, there is a link 16 at each side of the chair, each of which has one end pivoted to the chair seat 3 as indicated at 17, and the other end pivoted to the adjacent leg support 14, as indicated at 18, the length of the link 16 and the position of the pivots 17 and 18 being such that when the seat 3 is swung on its pivots up between the supports 1, the links 16 draw the legl supports up between the side supports 1 and contact with the out-turned portions of the ears 5 to limit the folding` movement of the chair and avoid improper unfolding movement of the chair.

While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claimse I claim as my invention:

1. In a folding chair, the combination of crossed and pivoted legs, the outer ones of which are extended to constitute the back posts, a seat having an odset bracket pivoted to the outer' legs, a chair back pivoted to the seat and slidably connected at its upper end with the back posts so that the seat and baok fold together vbetween the.

baekfposts'beyond the upper end of the inner pivoted legs, and a link pivoted at one end to the seat and. at the other end to an inner leg o that they fold andunfold simultaneously, the offset portion of the aforesaid bracket being adapted in the folded position to serve as a stop against which the linkengaues. n

2. 3. In a folding chair, the combination of crossed and pivoted legs, the outer ones of which are extended to constitute back posts, a seat having brackets on the opposite side offset ears adjacent the rear end pivota ly connected with the outer legs so that the seat folds -between the latter beyond the upper ends of the inner pivoted legs, a chair back having a pair of offset brackets at the lower end pivoted to the seat, means lslidably connecting thenpper end of the chair back with the .back posts and a link at each .side of the seat having one end pivoted to .the seat and thelother` endpivoted to the corresponding inner leg so that the Aseat and the inner legs fold and unfold simultaneously, said llnksbeing laterally offset between the ends so as to straddle. the brackets on` theedges of the seat.y and engage thel ofsetportions ofsaid brackets in the folded position.
