Description

C. J. TRXANTAFILLOU ADJUSTABLE SAFETY RAZOR Filed Jan. l0. 1924 Lcccfcc/FQ inw4 Patented Jan. 27, 1925.

ADJUSTABLE SAFETY nnzon.
Application filed January 10, 1924. .Serial No. 685,328.
To all 'whom 'it ,may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRls'r TRIANTA- FILLOU, citizen of Greece, residing at lNew Springville, Staten Island, in the countypf Richmond and State of New York, have in vented, vcert-ain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tlc-safetyrazors, having more particular reference to a razor adapted for use with blades which may vary in width by reason of frequent sharpening,
j the invention having for an object the prolvision of a novel construction, which permits rof variation of width of the clamping and lguard Aplates of the razor to accommodate them to the width of the blade, 'as the latter is frequently sharpened. D
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanied drawing, and to the appended claims in which'the varions novel features of the invention ar more particularly set forth. l
. Fig.1 of` the drawing is an axial sectional view of my improved razor, .taken transversely of the blade. j
Fig. 2 is a part side elevation and part axial section taken longitudinally through the blade.
Fig. 3 is' an end view.- l
Fi 4' is a sectional view takenapproximate y along theline of F1g,.1.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of sections oftheclamping and guard plates respectively. l
Fig. 7 is Aa face view of the blade.
:Referring now to the drawing I ny im. proved .safety razor comprises clamping and guard plates each split' longitudinally into 'two yitiectons,,the sections of the respectivev plates being numbered 10 and l1. On its inner edge each section of the guard plate is formed with a. rectangular cut out portion or recess 12 and at one end of each recess a leg 13 projects transversely, the legs on the respective sections being arranged to project into the opposed' ends of 'the respective recesses 12 when the parts are assembled. These legs 'have rack teeth 14 on their adjacent 'faces which are adapted to be enaged by opposite sides of a gear pinion 15 ormed adjacent the forward end of a cyhndrical handle or barrel. 16, the handle .hav-
I ing a disk vlike liange 17 'on its extreme end which overhangs the pinion, this flange being accommodated in cutout portions 18 in the front face of theguard plate sections 11.
Upon the barrel 16 is screwedI a collar 20 which is adapted to engage the rear face of the guard plate sections, and act in conjunctionwith the fiange'17 to bind the two sections to thesaid barrel or handle. To assist in maintaining the two sections 11 in parallelism each leg 13 may have an .extension 22 adapted to' engage in a guide recess 23 in the rear face of the other section.
' Each of the sections 10 of the clamping plate is formed on its innera edge with a outvv out portion orrecess 25 and. a pair of transverse projections or tongues 26, the tongues on\ the respective sections overlapping one l another. The clamping .plate :sections 10 are properly positioned with respect to the guard plate sections 11 by means of the studs 28 on the latter, these studs passing freely through transverse slo-ts,29"in the blader-3U and engaging in suitable sockets in vthe clamping plate sections. To lock the clamping plates in position I provid-e a rod 32 which extends freely through the handle 16- and has fixed on its forward end a relatively small plate 33 which engages in the recesses 25 and is adapted to bear on the tongues 26. The rear end of the rod 32 is threaded and is adapted `to engage by the' forward end 'of a tubular member 34 which extends through the barrel 16 and has enlarged rear end 35 overlapping the end of the said barrel. The tongues 26 are preferably given such curvature from end to end thereof and with respect to the sections 10 as will ensure of the latter bearing at their edges on-the blondes 30. In order to facilitate adj ustmen-t of the guard and clamping plate elements the blade as the latter becomes narrower upon sharpening, the blade may have the series of numbered marks 37 thereon, while the flange 17 on the end of the barrel 16 may have a. corresponding series of numbered.
ioo
ine-nt of my improved safety razor will be readily understood from the above description. When the init 20 istightened against the rear face of the guard plate sections the latter are-locked upon the barrel or handle i kening this nut and then rotating the barrel with respect to the two sections ll, the latter can be adjusted toward or away from one another. When changing or inserting a blade the latter is placed onthe guard plate, and the clamping plate sections are then placed in position. The rod 32 is then inserted through the usual central hole Ll0 in the blade and is tightened by screwing the tubularv member 34; on the rear thereof.
V While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not limit my- 'self to the precise construction herein shown, land that various changes and modifications might be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention'what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States i's as follows:
. l. In a safety razor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into two sections adjustable toward and away from one another, a handle, anda eollan threaded on said handle and releasably locking the said guard plate seetions to the said handle.
2. In a safety razor,- a guard plate -divided longitudinally into two sections adjustable toward and away from one another, a handle, and a collar threaded on 4said handle and eleasably locking the said guard plate sections to the said handle, said handle having a radial flange on its end between which and the said collar the guard plate sections are clamped.
In a safety razor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into two sections adjustable toward and .away from one another, a handle, and a'collar threaded on said handle and'releasably locking the said guard plate sections to the said handle, a clamping plate divided longitudinally into two sections, and means for locking said lclamping plate to the said handle.
4. In `a safety razor, a guard platedi-` vided longitudinally into two sections, rack elements formed on the respective sections, a handle barrel and a gear pinion lixed on said handle barrel engaging each of said rack elements.
5. In a salety razor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into two sections, rack ele-` ments liorn'ied on the respeetive sections, a handle barrel and a lrear pinion lixed on said handle barrel engaging eaeh ol` said raehr elements, and a collar threaded on the barrel for locking the same to the, said guard plate sections.
6. In a sulfety razor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into twp sections, rack elements toi-ined on the respective sections, a handle barrel and a gear pinion l'ixed on said handle barrel engaging each of said raeli elements, a radial llange ou the forward end of said' barrel overhanging the said pinion, and a collar threaded on the barrel and adapted to cooperate with the said llange to y lock the said guard plate sections to the said barrel.
7. f In a safetyrazor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into two sections, rack ele-A ments formed on the respective sections, a handle barrel and a gear pinion fixed on said handle barrel engaging each of said rack elements, a clamping plate also divided longitudinally into two sections, and studs on said guard plate seetiens engaging 11i sockets 1n said clamping plate sections to localize the latter sections upon the lioiiner.
8. In a safety razor, a g'uard plate divided longitudinally into two sections, rack elements formed on the respective sections, a handle barrel, and ag'ear pinion fixed on said handle bui-rel engaging cach of said rack elements, a elainping plaie also divided longitudinally into two sections, und studs on said guard plate sections engaging iii sockets in said clamping plate sections to localize the latter sections upon the former, overlapping tongues on the respective clamping plate seetions, a rod extending through the said barrel, a small plate on the front end of said rod bearing on the said tongues and a threaded locking element engaging the rear end ofsaid rod.
In testimony whereof I have allixed my signature.
