OIL BURNER.

Be it known that we, OWEN W. THOMAS, SPENCER L. THOMAS, and EMIL E. PETERSON, citizens of the UnitedStates, residing in Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Oil Burner, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in oil burners.
Its object is to provide a simple and durable device of the present nature adapted to operate effectively and economically and designed to he produced and installed at relatively small cost.
A further obiect is to furnish a burner of limited dimensions, the same providing for the effective vaporization of liquid fuel and for the provision of air at different levels, the air supply at one level supportingcombustion at its source and the other augmenting and spreading the llame, whereby the maximum of air may be employed in the gaseous mixture and accumulations of carbon thereby avoided.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. l
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical, central, sectional view of an oil burner embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, the same being taken on the line Bk of Fig. 1; Fig. f1 is a sectional view taken on the line 4tt of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
The present burner is of-the gravity type, the combustion supporting air being introduced at atmospheric pressure and the liquid fuel fed by gravity. The device includes a base A having a neck formed axially thereof, said base being hollow and providing for the ingress of air upwardly into and through said neck. A hollow vaporizing head B is supported with the bottom thereof spaced slightly above the rim of the neck 10 to form an annular orifice 11 between said head and neck. This structure is ordinarily placed at the center of a stove or furnace grate 12 (see Fig. l), that portion of the vgrate not covered by the burner structure being closed with sheet metal. as at 13 to more fully hereinafter appear.

The annular shell-like body 15 of the base A is open at the bottom thereof and permits of the passage of air upwardly through a supporting grate and into and through the neck 10. Said neck is of relatively large diameter and is preferably cast integrally with the top 1G of the base A, spaced vertical ribs 17 inside of the neck 10 have depending portions extending well beneath the top 16 of the base A. Castintegrally with said depending portions of said ribs is a catch basin 1S, the purpose of which will Rising centrally from the basin 18 is a stem 19 having a longitudinal bore 20 therein and an external flange 21 thereon slightly above the mouth of the neck 10.
The head B has the form of an inverted frustrum, the same being hollow and including a core 22, a top 23, an outwardly and upwardly flaring annular side wall 24 and a bottom piece 25. Said bottom piece 25 may be cast integrally with the core 22, but we find that the molding of the head B is simpliiied by constructing said bottom piece 25 apart from the head proper. The core 22 and bottom piece 25 have axial bores threaded internally to fit the upper threaded end of the stem 19 and to permit of the Seating of said bottom piece 25 against the flange 21.

This plate is cast integrally with the core 22 and is joined with said top 23 by means of spaced bosses 28. Inside of the wall 211 are upwardly inclined step-like ledges 29 forming a series of annular troughs. The inner edge ofthe upper ledge 29 reaches inside of the outer edge of the spreader plate 27 and the inner edge of each of the remaining ledges reaches inside of the inner edge of the ledge 29 thereabove. A liquid fuel supply pipe 30, fitted with a control valve` (not shown), feeds into the bore 20 of the stein 19 at the lower end thereof. Rising through this bore, liquid fuel flows outward over the spreader plate 27, thence drips into the rio formed like an inverted frustrum of a eone and supported with the bottom thereof slightly above said neck to provide an annular gas orifice, the bottom of said head having a marginal vapor outlet issuing downwardly into said orifice, means for feedino` liquid fuel into the head at the top there@ concentric ledges within the head forming annular step-like troughs and a spreader member over-reaching said ledges, said member being adapted to distribute the fuel and feed it into the uppermost trough, said troughs serving to retard the descent of the fuel in the head.
4. In a device of the class described, a base formed with a neck thereon and providing for the passage of air upwardly therethrough, a hollow vaporizing head above the base, means for feeding liquid fuel into the head, said head and base forming between them an annular gas orifice, said head having an annular vapor outlet therein, said outlet and said neck respeetively providing for the feeding of fuel vapor and air into said orifice and an annular opening in the neel; beneath said orifice for feeding air to the products issuing from the orifice.
5. In a device of the class described, a base formed with an air passageway extending upwardly therethrough, a hollow vaporizing head formed with an annular vapor outlet therein and supported above the base, means for introducing liquid fuel into the head, said head and base forming between them a restricted annular gas orifice, said vapor outlet and said air passageway feeding into said orifice, said base being formed with an auxiliary opening adjacent the oriflee for feeding air to the products issuing therefrom.
