for example',y cuil ter of the head and on a ot. The free end of the shank is provided with an annular groove 15 and a projecting locking pin 16. The pin 16 extends axially ot the shank 14- andthe end is bent at right angles, as indicated at 17. The female part 12 is similar in shape to the part 11 except that instead of the pin 16 the slranklta is provided throughout its length with a bore 18 and radial slot 19 to receive the pin 16. The head portion 13 of" the part 12 is preferably hollow and the inside Wall of the head is provided with a radial slot 2O forming a continuation of the slot 19 at the pointl Where the shank and the inside Wall. otthehead are joined together.
In the application-of the buttons to a cuff, theshanks 111 and 1st@ are inserted through the button holes and a Washer 21 is inserted in each of the grooves 15, the Washers 21 being disposed on the inside or' the cuffs. The Washers 21 comprise Hat disk members provided With acentral opening 22 and radial slotl23, as shown in Figure 3; the space between the'walls lot theopening 22 being oty a dimension to closely embrace the bottom of the groove 15 and the- Wallk ot the radial slot 23 vbeingfsubstantially smaller than the diameterof the opening 21. Figure 5. The other edge of the toe 30 is inclined so that when the bent portion 17 is inserted into the slot the pin will merely cause the spring to move the toe out of the path of incoming'pin. When the pin is finally engaged the toe 30 moves to its initial position over the slot and the pin is prevented from riding out of the said slot, however, if it is desired to remove the pin 16 the latter may simply be moved with sutlicient'force to cause the bent portion 17 to push the toe 30 out of the path of the portion 17 through the slot- 20.
The means for holding the pin 16 in the head 13, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, comprises a spring tongue 31 projecting from one edge of the slot 20 closely adjacent the center portion of the slot. The tongue is adapted to overlie the slot and to project transversely thereof. The free end of the tongue projects to a 4.plane substantially above the center of the pin, as shown in Figure 6, a construction which enables the pin to he inserted into the head through the slot 20. During the movement of the pin 16 through the slot 2() the tongue is pushed upwardly and a short rotation of the pin will cause the bent portion to ride out from under the tongue whereupon the latter will spring back to its initial position. To remove the pin the bent portion 17 is rotated until it engages under the lip of the tongue 31 which." will be forced upwardly and allows the portion 17 to register with aid and be withdrawn through the slot 20.
"In Figure S, the pin 16 is adapted to project to a point short of the inner periphery offthe hollow head 13a which is provided with a curved wire Vlocking member having a notch or upright groove 32 to receive the blunt end of the bent portion 17 of the pin 16. On the other hand if the bent portion 17 is provided with a pointed end 17b the pin maybe yiel'dably held by a tongue 33 cut in the inside wall or face of the head portion 13a, as shown in Figure 9.. The tongue in this case is disposed on a curve concentric with the periphery of the head and at the mid-portion thereof the tongue is provided with a` radially arranged groove 34 to receive the bent portion 17 of the pin, as shown in Figure 9.
Referring to Figure 10, the two parts of the button are exactly alike and consist of a flat head portion 35, and shank 36, the latter being provided with an annular groove 37 adjacent the end. In this forni of the invention the parts are connected or separably attached together by means of washers 38 and 39, which consist of flat plates having central openings 40 and outwardly disposed slots 41, the latter being adapted to slide over the grooved channel 37 in the shank 36, and the wallsV of the opening 41 being of a size to very closely embrace the bottom of the said groove. In order to permit the washers 38 and 39 to be slipped over the Shanks the former are provided with slits cut in the metal around one side of the slot l11 and opening 4() in the manner similar to the one employed in connection with the washers shown in Figure 1. The washer 3S is provided with oppositely disposed lugs 4-2 or hooks, or other similar fastening means, one being disposed on each side of the opening 40. The other washer 39 is provided with a transversely disposed loop L13 and hook 44 both of which are ada ted to receive the hooks @t2 of the first was ier 38. To attach the parts of the button together the washers are placed in position after the shanks 36 have been in* serted in the cuffs and then one hook 42 of the washer 36 is engaged in the loop 43 of the washer 39 and the other hook 42 is engaged under the hook 44 by moving one part slightly at an angle with respect to the other part of the button, or where diliierent closures are used, they are brought similarly together.
The operation involved in attaching thc two parts of the button together to hold a cuff in proper position is very simply carried out and consists in placing the shanks through the button holes in the cuffs so that the head portions are disposed on the outside and the two shanks are directed toward each other. The washers are then slipped into the grooves in the shanks and against the inner side of the cutls. In the desirn shown in Figure 1, the bent portion of t 1e pin is inserted in the slot of the other part of the button and then the part having the pin is rotated slightly whereupon the said bent portion of the piu will be engaged by a holding means such as one of those described and illustrated in Figures 5, 6, and 9.
Throughout the several views it will he noted that where the free end 17, 17 and 17b of the pins 16 and 16 are shown as heing blunt, the head of the slot 20 is preferably of a slightly increased diameter so as to receive the stem portion 16 of the pin, the stem in this form being slightly greater in diameter than the bent portion or end 17. On the other hand, in the modifications showing the pin as being pointed, the slot 2O is uniform throughout its length.
Referring to the ear-ring, the pin portion is inserted in the wearers ear and the disk portion having the radial slot is placed over the bent end portion of the pin and rotated slightly. Any of the holding means for the pin may be used in the construction of the ear-ring disk piece.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A separable button includin two members having Shanks, one shank raving thc end thereof bent at an angle to form an L-shaped portion and the other shank being provided with a radial slot opening to receive said L-shaped end portion, and a yield able holding` means disposed in the member having the slotted shank to engage the bent end of the other member when the latter is rotated with respect to the first member.
2.' A separable button as claimed in claim l, in which the said shanks are provided with annular grooves, adjacent their free ends, and radially slotted washers insertable in said grooves to form channels for the material holding the said button, substantially as described.

4. A separable button, as claimed in claim l, in which said holding means comprise a member having a recess to embrace the said bent end of the L-shaped portion of the. shank, substantially as described.
5. A separable button, as claimed in claim l, in which said holding means is mounted in the hollow head portion of said button and comprises a tongue disposed in the path of movement or' said bent end portion of the. L-shaped projection of said shank, said tongue having a groove adapted to embrace the bent end portion when the latter is moved to register therewith, substantially as described.
6. A separable button for an ear ornament comprising' a head member provided with an axially projecting L-shaped stem bent at its free end and reduced in diameter, a flat, hollow, interlocking member, having a radial key slot, and means disposed within the hollow member to yieldably engage the said bent portion of the stem to hold the latter against movement within the member.
7 A separable button, comprising a head member provided with a projecting L-shaped pin, a second head member provided with a slot to receive the end portion of the L-shaped pin, and a spring locking arrangement having a beveled toe overlying the said slot adjacent the inner end thereof; said toe being capable oi' holding the said pin against the end wall of the slot and to prevent the bent end portion from disengaging itself from the rst head member.
8. A separable button, as claimed in claim l, in which the said pin isA blunt at its free end and the holding means comprise a serpentine spring portion disposed in the head of the button adjacent the wall thereof, whereby the rotary movement of the end of the L-shaped portion of the pin will engage between the curves of the said spring portion, substantially as described.
9. A separable button as claimed in claim l, in which the end of the L-shaped portion of the pin is provided with a point and the yieldable holding means comprises a flat spring portion having a curved groove into which the bent portion of the pin adjacent the end thereof is adapted to be held, substantially as described.
