Be it known thet I, HENRY ERNST, a eitizen of the United States, residing at (heego, in the county of C00l end State of lllinois, have invented a certain new nnd useful Door (mard, of which the following is a speeificaiion.

This invention relates to irnprovements in door gnards of the type commonly nsed in eonjnnetion with ordinary door locks fo1 bnrglerprotection to prevent the door from being opened in the event the look has been pieked breken, re1noved or otherwise rende1ed ineilective end edapted to permit of a partial opening of the door Lis a precautionnry ineasure, without unloeking the same 'to such en extent as to enable the entrance of en intrnder.

The principal object of the invention is to provide 21 door gnard of the type referred to whieh is arranged to serve as a 1neans whereby the door may be moved to end held securely in any 0ne 01: a plurality of per tially open positions for the pur-pose of pro- "iding ventilation for the room into which the door leads.

A more speeifie object of the invention is to provide a door gnard of the type einploying a hinged strap vvith a bolt movable in u. slot in the strap, the strap heving notches or soekets at intervals the length thereof into vvhieh i pin or other means provided for the pnrpose may be entered selectively to hold the door in a pertially open position t0 which it has been set.

The device of the present invention is designed particularly for nse in hotels or other places where it is desired to set a door in a partially opened position t0 aford ventilation to a. room without too greatly increasing the hazard of burglars. It is inended to be used principally where a transom 01 the like is not provided, or where such is provided but is of snch 21 type that the hazard of burglars wonld be t00 greatly enheneed if the same vvere to be opened. In any event the device is adapted to serve as a door guard for burglar proteetion and is 'used in conjunetion with the other ordinary look provided for the door.

Deviees of the type 130 whieh the present invention applies commonly comprise a slotted strap hinged to a plate 11. In the hinge connection I prefer to provide plein pins 12 which are held in plece in a novel 1nanner to be presently described. In F ig.- 5 I have shown a modified form of locking pin at 29" which is arranged so that only one end thereof may be engaged in notches in the strap 10. WVith this form it is of eourse necessary only to pro- \ide notel1os on one side of the slot 20 of: the strap 10. This pin similarly tothe pin 29 l1as u bent portion 30 whereby it is 1nanipulated and is offset at the end to lorin t lnnnp 31 to prevent its withdrawal from the casing. This pin likewise frio tionnlly engages the casing after insertion und in that way is held in adjusted position.

The device is 1nanifestlv capable of modifioaton in certain details tlrereof without departing 1naterially from the general spirit of tl1e invention. Tl1e appended claims aie intended to co"er all legitimate modifications end udaptations of the invention whieh would occu1 to one skilled in ll1is art.

l. Tl1e combination with a door and a cusing, of u door guard co1nprising a slotted stmp hinged to tbe casing for pivotal n1ove1nent into and out o operative relation with respect to thedoo1, u casing li::ed to the door to move lelatie to sid strzrp, a headed bolt carried by said casing with the headed end arranged to project toward said strap, said bolt being adapted to 1nove in the slot in said strap with the slmnk thereof engaged in the slot, said strnp having a notoh foiined intermedate the length of said slot on one side thereof and a pin carried by said casing slidable relative to said bolt alongside the sllank thereof into said notch.

2. The co1nbination with a door and a casing, of 21 door gua1d comprising a. member fixed to said casing and having EL slot extending lengthwise tl1ereof, L member fixed to the door and having 2 head projecting therefrom arranged to operate in said slot to per1nit partial opening of the door. said slotted n1e1nber having sockets for'1ned inter1nediate tbe length of sad slot on the sides thereof, and a pin adapted for 1nove1nent seleotively into any one of snid so :l ets accordingly as it is desi1ed to Vary tl1e degree to wl1ch the door is opened.

3. The combination with {L door and 1 easng, of a door guard comprising an elongated nie1nber on said oasing lnwing a slot extending.lengthwise thereof, aheaded men1ber on said door adapted in the movement of said door to operate in said slot, said slotted 1ne1nber hzwng sockets or1ned nter1nediate the length of said slot on the sides tbereof, and a pin 1novable selectively into anv one of said sockets.

4. Tbe combination With u door and a casing of a door guard comprising an elongatecl 1nen1ber having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, L headed member adapted to operate in said slot, said slotted member haming sockets formed intermediate the lengtl1 of said slot on the sides thereof, a pin mov able selectively into any one of said soekets, and means to cooperate with sad pin to hold tbe sa1ne in operatix e position.

a headed bolt in said casing 1novable in the slotin said Ine1nber, said member hawing openings on the side of the slot therein, and a U-shaped pin slidable in said oasing to engage an end thereof in one of said openings, said pin having a leg tl1ereof spread outwardly before insertion into said casing to spring against the side of the opening provided in said casing to reoeiVe the same when inserted therein whereby to provide frictional resistanoe to Inovement of said pin in said casing in operation and a hu1nped portion on said pin to prevent withdrawal of said pin f1om sad oasing.

7. In 21 door guard tl1e combination of plate a11anged to be fastened to the door casing, and L strap hingedly connected to said plate and having a portion thereof airanged to ser"e as a li1nit-ing stop for the door to prevent more than a certain degree of opening of the door. said hinge oonnec tion comprising aligned apertured ears on said plate and strap, a pin entered in tbe apertures of seid ears, and barbs in said enrs at opposite ends of said pin arranged to be bent o"er to hold said pin in place.

8. The combination with u door and 2 door oasing, of a door guard comprising a lever swingably 1nonnted on the oasing, said lex er having a longitudinally extending slot terminating short of its oute1 end, and a plu rality of spaced sockets opening into said slot, a bolt mounted on tlie door adapted to operate in said slot whereby only a limited opening of the door is p-er1nitted, a pin mounted on the door and slidable seleotively into any one of said soekets, and 1neans t0 cooperate with said pin to ho1d the same in operative position.

9. The combination with a door and a door casing, of a door guard comprising a le"er swingablymounted 011 the casing, said lever having a longitudinally extending slot terminting short of its outer end, and a pair of oppositely positioned sookets openng int said slot, & casng member fixedly mounted 011 the door relatve to said lever, a headecl bolt carried by said member aclapted to operate in sad slot Whereby only a limtedppening of the door is permitted, and a U-sha ped pin mountecl in saicl member ancl sliclable into said sockets t0 lld the door aganst movement.

10. 11. The combination with a casing of a plate secured t0 sad casing, and a stmp hingedly connected t0 said plate, said hinge connect1on comprising alined apertu1ed enrs on sad plate and strap, a pin enteied in the apertures of said ea1s and barbs in said ears at opposite ends of said pin arranged to bebent 0x er t0 h0ld said pin in alace.

12. The combnation wit-h a 001 and door casing, of 21 door gnard comprising u lever swingably mounted on the casing, said lever having a longitudinally extending slot; telminating short of ts 0uter end, a bolt mounted 0n said door adapted t0 operate in said slot whereby only a limited movement of the door is permtted, a in mounted on saicl door and slidable int0 sa1d slot t0 enguge the latter in any one of a plurality of positions, and means t0 cooperate with said pin to held the same in operative position.
