To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AGNES (l FLIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have I invented certain new and useful Improvements in hlillinery, of which the following is a spuzification, refelence being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrative of one particular embodiment of my invention.

My invention relates to millinery such as is used by women for covering or partially covering the head, but which may be ready removed, or may be readily converted for other use.

More particularly it relates to a headgear which may be readily connected to form a 'turban or the-like, for womens wear, and when so temporarily connect-ed constitutes a visibly complete turban, toque or appearing article of millinery,

but which may, at any moment, be partially separated so as to extend the material and fabric the full length of the periphery of the head, in order to constitute ashoulder 95 throw, boa or shoulder cape.

As a head-gear or shoulder cape it may be made of the usual fabric with ornamentation of flowers, artificial or real, or with ribbon, fur or other usual accoutrements,

but may also be of basic material of a hat permanently connected at one part of the periphery, and slit over the crown from such a point to a substantially diametrically opposite point where the peripheral or 38 rim portions are severed, with readily connect-able or separable means so as to form a complete headgear unit, or when detached to form an extended member or apparel device which will readily "fit over the ID shoulders and the back of the neck, or may be otherwise disposed for convenience.

In some terms the construction lends it self to the formation of a hat in perfect assemhly condition for head-gear, but quickly 46 removable and convertible into a device or form of apparel convenient for disposal on lap, or otherwise, without injury. to the material or ornamentation of the apparel of great utility for theatre use and the like.

Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of the extremities of the article at. their juncture illustrating their union and adjustable connection for transformation into a hat.

The particular form thus illustrated, it will be seen by Fig. 1 constitutes a complete hat for womens wear comparable in every respect to a usual head-dress quite universally used. Fig. 2 illustrates the apparel shown in Fig. 1 when opened up, that is, in part detached so that the entire periphery of the hat effect is extended so as to form an article of apparel fitting over the same womans shoulders. In the latter form, the particular design, construction or configu' ration enable the user to throw it about the shoulders, and depending upon the design and relative size of head and shoulders it may constitute a shoulder throw or What is known as a cape or a collarette or a boa. The millinery art will serve to produce this combination, or as it may be called transformation, in innumerable ways as far as size, design and artistic edect are concerned, and of any material desired which is usual for capes or neckwcar and for hats, likewise may he made of material or comhinations varying with the seasons.

union of the slit 8 at the top is accomplished 11 by such readily detachable devices as snap fasteners 99, and the extremities, when the article is extended have readily detachable devices such as snap fasteners 10-10. Close to one end I prefer to secure a linkage device such as 11, with retractable cord or chain 1: 2 adapted to readily snap or hook-into the device 13, when the article is thrown about the shoulders or neck.

As shown in Fig. 5, at least one of the detachable extremity snap sockets is multiplied so as to form a plurality 14, 14 1%" providing means for a connection to vary the circumterentiai extent of the head size 5, in order to more conveniently adapt a particu larhat to the size of the user without any permanent or material change in the sewing or in the adjustment of the hair. The head size in womens close-fitting hats has a band which is associated with the lower edge with material for hat band, lining or headsize of suitable degree of stiffness and suitable make-up and this lower portion of'the upstanding parts with the band we call the band portion. hen this hand portion has adjacent outside adornment or special finish, it constitutes what is called in this art a coronet-.- Such coronation is illustrated in the drawings and is clear from Fig. 1 as a coronet in a hat, and in Fig. 2 constitutes the ornamental border of the article when converted into a shoulder throw, and the drawings in Fig. 3 illustrate at 6 elements of one form of ornamentation, which duplicated around the border forms what is generally referred to in the trade as the coronet.

It will thus be seen that the article, one form of which is specifically herewith shown and described is in its preferred form a unit article, that is comprising essentially one piece, in the nature of a transformation from one use to another, namely, at the will of the wearer either for a hat, orrnomentarily, as desired, for a neck and. shoulder piece. This invention is of most marked utility for theatre or similar use. In such cases the removal of the hat is compulsory or desired. and invariahlv there is-no suit able place to put a hat when removed. in a theatre or the like. and in any event where ever disposed it is subject to damage or inconvenience. This invention not alone provides a convenient place to dispose the article when removed from the head. but it serves the double purpose of providing the advantages of a necir or shoulder throw for protection against drafts and the usual matters of comfort, as well as appearance. which otherwise are served by the additional article frequently worn for that purpose, thus making it entirely unnecessary to carry or wear a separate or additional article of apparel as is customary.

This transformation article therefore ierves i'or convenience and also for economy in addition to the novelty and the protection against damage frequently involved in removing and handling a hat in the theatre. or on other occasions.

It also provides an article which may be packed with greater convenience, and in the matter of private, as well as trade transport of these articles there is great advantage as compared with the complete and fixedly formed head-gear with its corresponding ornamentation.

While in the particular form shown the permanent union of the head-band is shown at the front, in its form as a hat, and the detachable ends of the hat-band are shown in the rear, various modifications may he made to suit the artistic or utilitarian aspect of these features. Various degrees of stillness of hat-band and various make-up of material for hat-band, lining or head size are all capable of variation to suit the taste or idiosyncrasies of the millinery art. 7 Various devices for connecting the detachable portions and connecting the intermediate material. between the front and the rear may be used, and, if desired, in some forms no fixed inter-connection of the crown or top portion need by used.

In any event the extended article of apparel wlt-h a certain amount of shape and form advantageous in both forms of its use, provide for more or less fit or cling to the shoulders, and alternately a suitable shape for the hat efiect.

While various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A head apparel for women comprising a turban with band portion and contiguous upstanding side crowns, a contiguous top crown having a separable slit throughout. a slit severing the band portion registering with the slit in the crown, means for readily attaching or detaching the adjacent edges of the crown and the ends of the band portion.

2. A transformable article of apparel, constituting in one form ashaped hat having a head size lower edge, adjacent upstanding formed side crowns and contiguous crown with detachable parting acros the entire crown, and in its alternate form providing a. shoulder throw wherein the crown sides form a fitting shoulder covering and the band portion constitutes the border.

3. A collarctte having a band edge, means for detachably securing the extremities thereof, two shoulder-fitting sides each projecting separately from respective halves of the band portion and completely disconnected from each other at their edges remote from the band portion, and means for connecting said sides whereby when the band portion ends are united the article is oonverted into a formed hat with head size and upstanding side crown and interengaging top crown.

4. An article of womens apparel comprising in one form a shaped hat of adjustable head size, comprising band portion and adjacent foundation to form upstanding side crowns, a contiguous top crown, said crown portions having a slit throughout and a continuation of said slit extending through the band portion at one point, means for adjustably connecting the band portion to vary the head size, and. means for interconnecting the sides of the slit of the remainder of the slit through the top crown, whereby separation of said slit provides an article in a form usable as a collarette to fit the shoulders and back of the neck.

5. A toque for womens wear consisting of a formed hat with band portion and crown, a separable transverse parting from one edge or" the band portion therethrough throughout/the crown, substantially invisible fastening for said parting edges when the article is used as a hat, whereby a toque for regular wear which in a pearance is a completely formed hat, may readily converted into a shoulder throw.

6. A womans hat comprising a coronet associated with a headsize band separable at .one place in the circumference, a-twopart crown having a shaped upstanding portion in each part and having each part integral with and extending from one half of the headsize band, a soft to crown portion integral with each shaped upstanding portion, and means for detachably securing the ends of the headsize band where separable and for entirely separating and connecting the adjacent edges of the top-crown portions.
