' Jan, zo. 1925. Lszaaes P. SHAFTER OUTER GARMENT OR SWEATER Filed June 27. 1924 a@ Wwf/M @kmq Patented Jan. Z0, i925,
PATENT GFFICE.
PHILIP SI-IAFTER, F MANHATTAN BEACH, NEW YORK.
OUTER GARMENT 0R SWEATER.
Application filed June 27, 1924.
To all zr/iom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PHILIP Sl-nrrrnn, a citizen ot the United States, residing` at 75 Amherst Street, Manhattan Beach, in the county ot Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and uset'nl Improvements in Outer Garments or Sweaters, of which the following is a` specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wea-ring apparel and has particular reterence to outer garments such as sweaters, sweater coats. or other knitted garments ot' like character.
More specitically, my invention relates to the provision ot an auxiliary collar lor such garments and in combination therewith and adjacent thereto apair of reversible lapels.
rllhe object ot my invention is to produce a garment which can be used either as a sweater with the usual V-shaped neck openingor as a sweater having acollar and lapels. Drs a .tuther alternative, it is my object to provide a pair of lapels so arranged with retercnce to said garment and the collar thereot that they may be worn turned back in the usual manner or folded over each other to close said V-shaped opening more or less and thereby protect the chest ot the wearer in cold weatlier when desired.
lily improvement provides a three-in-one garment that may be worn with its parts in any ot three did'erent relative positions each ot which gives a pleasing appearance to the garn'ient.
lhile I h a ve shown my improvement applied to a knitted sweater. it is hroadly applicable to any garment which may be provided with a collar and lapels.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a sweater adapted to he worn in the usual V-neck style the attached collar and lapels being shown folded inwardly to lie against the body of the user and concealed Jfrom view.
Fig. 2 shows my improved sweater arranged for a second manner oi wear having the auxiliary collar and lapels turned out to appear in the usual manner of the same.
Fig. 3 shows the same sweater arranged for a third manner ot wear in which the lapels are shown folded over each other.
Serial No. 722,831.
Figure l shows the auxiliary collar and lapels as they appear when spread out in the same plane, the broken lines indicating the position ot the lapels when in concealed position.
Referring in detail to the drawing numeral l indicates the body of a sweater coat having a collar band 2 which is a1'- ranged to provide the usual V-shaped neck opening 3. 1Within the coat along the 'inner lower edge ot said band, is attached an auX- iliary collar member Lt which may be made the same material and color of the coat body or of a different material or color.
As clearly shown in Fig. the auxiliary collar l is attached to band 2 along line (l d. Adjacent each end of collar 4, I attach on lines 7) d and 7) d a lapel member 5. Each lapel 5 is attached along one edge to collar band 2 as shown at a (l and a d.
Fig. l shows the sweater coat in position to be worn in the usual V-neck style. Collar -land lapels 5 are shown turned in to be concealed trom view 'in which position these parts lie tlat against the body of the wearer and the inner surtace of the sweater as shown tor the major part by dotted lines.
Fig. Q shows the sweater arranged for a second manner of wear. Collar 4. and lapels 5 are here shown as turned out to appear in the usual position of such elements.
Fig. 3 shows al third manner in which my improved sweater can be worn wherein lapels 5 are shown as turned inwardly to overlap each other and close that portion ot the V-shaped openingl which is adjacent the chest o'l the wearer. As shown in this figure the right hand edge of the outermost lapel when folded is located between the collar band and the rear lapel and underlaps said band. In this position, said lapels cover the chest of the wearer in the vicinity ol theI vl-shaped opening and thereby funetion to protect the wearer from extreme cold or winds. A button or other fastener 6 is provided at a suitable location on the inner tace of band 2 to engage a loop or button hole 7 adjacent the tip of the outer lapel 5.
Fig. 4 shows how collar Il and lapels 5 appear when the sweater is fully thrown open to bring these parts into the same plane. Nitti the Sweater front Closed as in Fig. f1 the lapels will assun'ie the position Shown by the broken lines in Fig'. +L.
I claim :is my invention,
A combination garment having a V- shaped neck opening` and a Collar band, an auxiliary reversible, collar` reversible lapels attached to said reversible Collar along u. portion of adjacent ends, Said reversiblo oollm' and lupols living :itlncliod to tlifinnvr l0 surface ol: said gul-mont inwardly `from tln` odge of said openingT whereby said lapeh` may lie crossed to owrlie each other in which position :1 portion of the outermost lapel will Cngng'@ betwmn tlio inner lapel 1"" and Said collar lmnd.
In testimony whereof I nlix nrv Signatura PHILIP SHA F'FER.
