EUGENE KING WILLARD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
AUTOMOBILE BODY ADVERTISING PANEL.
Application filed March 1'7, 1,123.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lilnonxn limo lVlL- LARD,'21 citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Body Advertising Panels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to advertising panels, and more particularly to an advertising panel for a vehicle body, such, for example, as disclosed by my copending application Serial No. GliLGOi, filed February 2, 1923.
"line of the purposes of the in -rention is to provide a window with a translucent screen having pictorial or other matter thereon, and an illuminating box mounted a; the back of the scree and provided with electrizllamps for throwing their light through the screen to illuminate the matter thereon. The back of the box may have a reflecting surface for reflecting and diffusing the light from the lamps through the screen.
The light has greatest intensity at the spots where the lamps are located. Another purpose of the invention, therefore, s to provide means for shielding the lamps at their sides facing the screen. so that the light will not be directly thrown from the lamps to the screen, and therefore, spots of light at the locations of the lamps will not be visible externally of the screen.
It is desirable from time to time to introduce different screens in the window frame, in order that the pictorial or other matter displayed may be varied in accordance with requirements of different advertising. Another purpose of the invention, therefore, is to provide means for detachably securing the screen frames in the window frame, and means for securing the reflecting box to the window frame having provision permitting movement of the box away from the window frame to enable ready access to the screen frame for the purpose of quickly removing the same from the window frame and substitution of another screen frame therefor.
With the aforesaid and other purposes in View, the character of the invention will be best understood by reference to the following description of one good form thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Serial No. 625,907.
Fig. l is a perspective view of an advertising panel. embodying the lnvention, a portion of the reflecting box being broken away to disclose parts in and beyond the same;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the panel showing the reflecting. box detached from the window frame; and
Fig. 2-3 on an enlarged scale is a sectional detail to be referred to.
lie ferring to the drawing, the advertising panel shown therein as one good form of th invention, comprises a window frame'l ich may be mounted in the side 3 of a vehicle hotly, such, for example, as that disclosed. in my application above referred to. The window frame may have a rabbet 5 formed therein to receive a glass pane 7 for protecting the screen to-be described. The edges of the pane may rest on cushion strips 9 of rubber or other suitable material mounted in the rabbet. The glass pane and the cushion strips may be secured in place by cleats 10 mounted in therabbet and secured to the window frame by screws 10.
The screen, in the present instance of the invention, comprises a sheet of canvas 11 or other suitable translucent material which may have pictorial or other advertising matter painted or otherwise produced thereon. T his canvas sheet has its margins bent over and tacked or otherwise secured to a frame 13 which may have beveled faces 15 facing the canvas and spaced therefrom to admit light to the margins of the canvas. To removably secure the screen frame in the window frame, buttons 17 may be secured to the cleats l0, and may be. adjusted to secure or release the screen frame as desired.
The means for illuminating the screen in order that the pictorial or other matter thereon may be conspicuously visible when viewed from the exterior of the vehicle body, in the present instance, comprises an illuminating box or casing 19 having sides 21 and a back 22, said box being of appropriate size to fit in the window frame 1 back of the screen. The inner faces of the sides and the back of the box may be painted white or otherwise treated to reflect light.
Suitable illuminating means may be mounted in the box, in the present instance, in the form of incandescent lamps 23 mounted at intervals on the sides 21 of the box and connected to conductors 25 which project through an eye 27 in the back of the box, said conductors receiving electrical current from any suitable source.
To prevent spots oflight at thelocations of the lamps from being visible through the translucent screen,- the lamp bulbs may have their sides 29 facing the screen painted black or otherwise rendered opaque. The construction is such that the light will not be directly thrown from the electric lamps through the screen, but will be thrown from the lamps onto the back of the box and be reflected thereby through the screen. As a consequence, the light will be desirably diffused so as uniformly to illuminate the screen throughout the area thereof.
The box may be detachably secured to the window frame by buttons 31 secured to the window frame and adapted to overlap the margins of the back of the box. These buttons may be easily adjusted to release the box or to lock the same in position.
lVhen it is desired to remove a screen from the window frame and to substitute another therefor, it is merely necessary to release the buttons 31 from the box, thereby allowing the same together with the lamps carried thereby to be removed from the window frame. This will expose the screen and the securing buttons 17 for convenient access. On release of the buttons 17 from the screen frame, the screen may be quickly and easily removed from the window frame and another screen substituted therefor. Then the buttons 17 may be adjusted to i 11:! i m.
is not limited to the specific embodiment shown, and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim- An advertising panel for a vehicle body comprising a window frame having a glass pane therein, a translucent screen having pictorial or other matter thereon, a frame for said screen removably mounted in the window frame back of the glass pane, an illuminating box mounted in the window frame back of the screen, electric lamps mounted at intervals at the sides of the box and having opaque surfaces facing the screen. said box having a reflecting surface at the back thereof for reflecting the light from the lamps through the screen, and means for securing the box to the window frame having provision permitting movement of the boxto allow removal of the screen from the window frame and substitution of another screen therefor.
