Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and has for one object to provide a binder adjustable. for different sized periorated sheets or for sheets having perforations different distances apart or ditterently located therein.
The loose leat' binders ordinarily in use have the great disadvantage, that the posts which hold the leaves are. usually secured against longitudinal displacement on the binder member, and could be used only for perforations a certain distance apart. This is a great disadvantage and makes it impossible to use similar binders with perforated sheets of differentsizes and having the` holes different spaces apart.
The present invention overcomes these disadvantages.
Another object ot the invention is to provide a binder as above described in which all the binderposts of one binder member may be. locked'by a single movement.
Another object ot the invention is to provide an economically manufactured, easily operated sectional binder post, the sect-ions of which may very quickly be assembled and disassembled for adjusting' the length of the posts for ditte-rentnumbers of leaves.
The loose leaf binder posts hitherto employed, which are adjustablel in length have the great disadvantage, that the posts are usually rigidly secured together by threaded connections. Such iittings are costly and require a long time to manipulate.
The present invention overcomes this disadvantage.

The form of our improved loose leaf binder shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, comprises an upper binder member 10 (Fig. 1), a lower binder member 11 and cove-r boards 12 hingedly secured to said members l() and 11 respectively. Loose leaves 15 (Fig. are disposed between said members respectively and the associated cover boards and provided with perforations 16 oi' notches at the 'inner edge portion. Blocks 17 and 18 slidable in said members l0 and 11 respectively are provided with openings 19 and 2O adapted, when the blocks are slid, to register with certain ot said pert'orat-ions 16 or notches and to receive posts 22 disposed in said openings 19 and 20 and perforations 16 or notches and secured in the openings.
The upper binder member 10 comprises upper and lower parallel spaced walls 23 and 24: respectively provided with registering post-receiving slots 25 Fig. 1) extending longitudinally of the member. The locking blocks 17 slidable therein are each provided with a longitudinal rod-receiving bore Q6 approximately tangentially intersacted by said locking bore. Bearing blocks 29 in lili! , locking rod-40 (Fig. 3) rotatable in said bearing apertureshas a squared key-receiving end 31 (Fig. 1) and has its intermediate part engaging in said bores and provided with a flat side 43 similar to the flat side 33. The posts 22 disposed in said retaining openings 19 and 20, pass through said slots and locking openings and are substantially disengaged from said locking rods when the flat sides 33 and 43 are turned toward the posts, but when the flat side is turned awa-y from the posts, the roundside ot the lower locking rod engages the post shanks 44 secured to or associated with the'blocks 18 in any suitable manner such as being riveted in the opening 2O and holds the blocks 18 against longitudinal displacement, while the upper rod 30 when turned with the round side to the post locks the post in the opening 19 and also holds the upper block17 against longitudinal displacement. Y lVhile any form of binding post may be used, a sectional binding post as shown in Figs. 6 tol 8 is preferred. This post consists of a lowersection 45, having shanks 44 and 46, and one or more upper' sections 47, each, except the top section, having a reduced shank similar to the shank 46 and having at its bottom end a shank-receiving bore 48 having at its inner end a small aperture extension 49. .Said bore forms side walls 50 provided on opposite sides with bayonet slots 52V each turned ,in the same direction for forming undercut recesses having backwardly disposed recessed seats 54 on diametrically opposite sides of said wall. A diametric pin 55 in the shank 46 has both ends projecting and adapted to pass through said bayonet slots 52 of an adjacent section and tov rest in said seats 54. A helical spring 56 in the bottom of each bore 48 has an axial extension 57 litted tightly in said extension 49, said spring being compressible by the shank 46 in said bore and yieldably pressing on the shank to hold said projecting ends o't the pin in said seats. The lower binder member 11a is similar to the binder member 11, comprising upper and lower parallel spaced walls, the upper 'wall only being provided with post-receiving slots 35. The retaining blocks 58 slidably disposed iny said lower binder member are eachV provided with a vertical postreceiving opening 60 spaced Vfrom a threaded longitudinal rod-receiving -bore 66 and approximately registering with said respec-` tive slots 35. Bearing blocks 2.8 in opposite ends of said binder member are provided with alined bearing apertures 29 disposed longitudinally of the 'binder member. An intermediately threaded adjusting rod 70 having a squared key-receiving end 71, and smooth end portions 72 Vengaged in said apertures 29, has intermediate right and left threads 73 engaging in said threaded bores 66. The posts 75 are secured toor associated with the blocks 58 such as by being riveted in said openings 60'and pass through said slots 35 and locking openings 19 and are locked by said locking rod 3() asexplained. The rod 70 does not engage'the posts; but rotation of the rod 70 moves the blocks 58 in oppositedirections, and thusV i spaces them different distances apart, Fig.V 5 shows a binding post 75 having a threaded connection 76 for an extension section; it is understood that either form of post section 75 or 45 may be used with either binder member.V
The operation of the device is very simple.
vThe blocks 18 with their posts, being unlocked by turning the flat sider43 to the shank 44, are slid to receive the desired perforations "of the sheet. The sheet is then moved to the desired location of the binderV and the blocks 18 locked by rotation of the 55 through the slots 52 to the seats 54.

Having thus described our invention, we claim:
l. In combination, a pair ot binder members; a pair of blocks longitudinally ad- `iustable on each of said members; removable posts connecting Corresponding` blocks ot' the respective members; and unitary means for locking the posts respectively to both blocks of one member.
2. In combination, a pair of binder members; blocks longitudinally adjustable on each of said members; posts passing through and connecting corresponding blocks of the respective members; a rotary rod passing through both blocks ot one ot' the members and adapted on rotation to lock the posts therein; and means for holding the posts in the blocks ot the other member.
3. In combination, a binder member; blocks longitudinally adjustable thereon; posts received respectively by sai-d blocks; and a rod having aflat side passing through both of said blocks and adapted on rotation to lock the posts. i

In combination, in a loose leaf binder, an upper binder member comprising upper and lower parallel spaced walls respectively provided with registering post-receiving slots .extending vlongitudinally ot the meinber; a pair oit locking blocks slidably disposed in said upper binder member and each provided with a longitudinal rod-receiving bore and at its middle part with a vertical locking opening approximately tangentially intersecting said rod-receiving bore and .approximately registering with said slots; bearing blocks in opposite ends ot' said bindermember provided with alined bearing apertures disposed'longitudinally ot .the binder member; a locking rod rotatable in said bearing apertures and having a squared key receiving end and having` its intermediate part engaging in said bores and pro-vided with a iiat side; a lower binder member; and posts adjustably secured to said lower member and passingl through said slots and locking openings and substantially disengaged from said locking rod when said flat side is turned toward thel post. and adapted to be locked by said locking rod when the'flat side is turned away lroin the post.

A hollow binder member comprising upper and lower parallel spaced walls, the upper wall being provided with post-receiving slot-s extending longitudinally o't the member; a pair ot retaining blocks slidably disposed in said binder member and each provided with a threaded longitudinal rodreceiving bore and at its middle part with a vertical post-receiving yopening' spaced from said rod-receiving bore and approfiimately registering with said respective slots; bearing blocks in opposite ends otV said binder member orovided with alined bearing apertures disposed longitudinally of the binder member; an intermediate threaded lim lli:

9. In combination, in a loose leaf binder, an upper binder member; a lower binder member; loose leaves disposed bet-Ween said members respectively; blocks slidable on said members respectively; and posts secured to corresponding .blocks of the respective members.

In combination, in a loose leaf binder; an upper binder member; a lower binder member; loose leaves disposed between said members respectively and provided with perforations; blocks slidable in said members 'respectively and provided Vwith openings adapted, when the blocks are slid, to register with certain of said perforations or notches; and connecting members disposed in said openings and perforations and secured vin said openings.

In combination7 in a loose leaf binder; an upper binder member; a lower binder member; cover boards hingedly secured to said members respectively; loose leaves disposed between said members respectively and the associated cover boards and provided With perforations or notches at the inner edge portion; blocks slidable in said members respectively and provided with openings, adapted when the blocks are slid, to register with certain of said perforations or notches; posts disposed in said openings and perforations or notches and fast in said openings of the blocks of one member; and means for releasably securing the posts in the blocks of the other member;

In combination7 a plurality of sections one having a reduced shank and one Vhaving a bore forming side walls provided on opposite sides with bayonet slots each turned in the same direction and forming recesses having backwardly disposed recessed seats; a pin in said shank having its ends projecting and adapted to pass through said bayonet slots and to rest in said seats; and a spring in the bottom of saidv bore and adapted to press on the shank to hold said projecting ends in said seats,

In combination, a pair of binder members; leaves disposed between said members; retaining blocks and locking blocks slidable on said members respectively; posts asso ciated with the locking blocks and secured to the retaining blocks; a cam-formed eccentric rod passing through the locking blocks and adapted on rotation to lock the blocks to the associated posts; and an adjusting rod having intermediate right and left threads engaging the retaining blocks.

In a binder, the combination with upper and lower hollow members, ot a plurality o'l blocks in the lower member and slidable therein, threaded bores in said* blocks; means in said lower member cooperr-ating with said threaded bores for adjustably moving the blocks longitudinally, there being openings in the upper part of said lower member, posts associated with said blocks and movable in said openings, longitudinally movable blocks in the upper member, there being apertures in said latter blocks for cooperating with the posts slidable in the lower member, and means coacting with the blocks in the upper member for locking the posts thereto.

In a binder, the combination with upper lower hollow members, of a plurality oli blocks in each member, said blocks being longitudinally slidable therein, posts associated with the blocks in the lower member, there being apertures in the blocks ot' the upper members cooperating with said posts, and means in the upper member for locking the posts in the apertures.

In a binder, the combination with upper and lower hollow members, of a plurality of blocks longitudinally movable in said lower member, there being threaded bores in said blocks, means in said lower member cooperating with said bores for positioning said blocks, posts associated with said blocks, a plurality of blocks movable in said upper hollow member, there being openings in said latter blocks for receiving the posts therein, and means extending into said openings for locking the posts therein.
