TRANSFER MACHINE.
Application filed May 5, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that CHARLES E. BATY, Jr., and FRANK E. GRAY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transfer Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for printing and issuing transfers on street cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine which may be manually set by a conductor to position certain type wheels, associated with means whereby type wheels may be actuated to print on a strip selected data, and subsequently by actuating an operating knob, a transfer will be issued and a ribbon will be advanced for a subsequent operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bodily movable type carrying platform, resiliently mounted in a housing and adapted to be moved in printing relation by applied pressure to effect a printing operation.
The invention also relates to improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved 7 transfer machine.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line of Fi l.
2: 7 Fig. 4C is a detail section on the line 4- of Fig. 1.
F1 5 1s a detail section on the line p of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detail View of one of the rib- 7 bon rollers.
1 indicates a housing, which may be inclosed in a suitable casing, the housing being provided with a front opening 2, a front transverse slit 8, and oppositely A aligned longitudinal slits 4-4:. A horizontal partition or printing platen 5 is supported in the housing, and between the partition and one wall of the housing are four posts 6. Mounted to reciprocate on the posts is a platform 7, and on the posts between the partition 5 and the platform Serial No. 636,960.
are springs 8, which normally force or hold the platform against one wall of the hous ing. Extending from the platform and through a sleeve on the housing, is a stem 9, provided at its upper end with a flat knob 10, located to be conveniently depressed to operate the machine.
The platform 7 is provided with an extension 11, and rising therefrom is a bracket 12, which aligns with similar brackets 13-13 also extending upwardly from the platform. ltfounted in bearings formed in the brackets is a shaft 14, and on this shaft is a series of sleeves 151617l8 and 19. On the inner end of each sleeve is a type wheel 20, while on the outer end of each sleeve is a hand wheel 21, having peripheral flanges provided with numbers and letters to correspond to the numbers or letters on the type wheels. The face of each hand wheel is provided with a series of openings or indentations 22 corresponding to the numbers and letters on the hand wheels, and cooperating with each hand wheel is a pawl 23 pivoted on the extension 11 and held in operative relation by a spring 24, whereby to hold a selected type wheel in adjusted printing position.
Located in a frame 1 extended from the housing 1 is a magnifying glass 1 so disposed with reference to the hand wheels as to magnify the characters on the peripheries of said wheels to readily permit the conductor to see the characters he desires to select in issuing a transfer.
Located in brackets extending from oppo site sides of the housing are two shafts and 26, which receive rollers 27 and The roller 27 is provided at opposite ends with ratchet wheels 29, while the roller 28 is provided at one end with a single ratchet wheel 30. A spring actuated pawl 81 engages with one of the ratchet wheels 29 to prevent retrograde movement of the roller 27, while a similar pawl 32 engages with the ratchet wheel 30 to prevent retrograde movement of roller 28.
A ribbon indicated at 34 wound on the roller 28 and is fed step by step to the roller 27, as will presently appear. The ribbon is located adjacent the partition or platen 5 and is normally in spaced relation to the type wheels, as shown.
Mounted in the housing beyond the partition 5 are two shafts 35 and On the shaft 35 is a ratchet wheel 37 held against retrograde movement by a. spring pawl 38 and operated by a pawl 39,,pivoted to the platform at 40, and held in operative relationwith the'ratchet wheel-"by a spring 41.
meshes with agear wheel onthe shaft 36. Thegear wheel 45 also meshes witha pinion 46 on a shaft-47, carrying a paper feed roll 48, and located adj acent:the:trans verse slit 3 in the housing...Cooperatingwith the paper feed roller 48 is an upper feed roller 49, having a pinion-50-which meshes with the pinion 46, the two rollers acting to feed the paper from-the machine;
51 indicates a stud -having one end mounted in the housing, and-fitting overtheopposite endisa lever 52 hinged at 53 and held in operative relation by a spring 54. A pair of washers are slipped-on the stud 51 and between the same isa' roll'of paper 55, the'roll being engaged'by'a spring pressed roller 56 to prevent it unwinding too freely. The strip of paper passes'from the roll and around'a roller mounted in.
brackets on the-partition 5, and is thence passed along the partition'or platen and'be-r tween the feed rolls 48-and 49:
fer. bring the desired type to the bottom-and above the platen then the operator exerts pressure on=the flat knob 10 which moves-the: platform against the tension ofthe springs,
This action movesthe type wheels toward the ribbon, and the imprint of the type is made on the strip of paper and" against the:
platen. Movement ofthe platform-against the tensionof the springs also actuat'e's the pawl 39, and the saw-shaped teeth ridepverthe teeth'of the ratchet wheel"37. Corre spondinglythe pawl 47' rides over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 29, consequentlyfin the printing movement of the 'platformflio 'mo tion is imparted to shaft 35or' the' roller 27. Immediately pressure on'th'e knob is relieved, the springs automatically:-"return the platform to normal position, hence the teeth 42 of the pawl 39 engage the teeth: of
partial rotation of "the ratchet wheel 37 rotates the gear 45 and through the gears 46 and 5O, the paper feed rolls 48 and 49 are rotated to feed the paper from the machine:
Pivoted tothe pawl "walls ofthe slit. 4
- The machine 'is designed to besetup inconvenient reach of a conductor, so that when a transfer point is reached, the type Wheels can be quickly set and a transfer issued and torn off. The-type wheels can be set by the conductor before the/transferv point is reached so'that as quickly as' the; knob can be depressed and the slips torn off, transfers can be'issued without theusual' delays duringqrush hours. v w
Through the mechanism described, after a selection of type have been made, the operation of printing-iseifecte'd by pressure and in this movement the parts areset for a subsequent operation, that 'is, thefeeding of the paper and feeding of the ribbon, this of course being accomplished by the action of the springs. V
