To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pncrnn Knusnz, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Curling the Edges of Can Bodies, Tubes, or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for curling the edges of can bodies, tubes or the like, and aims to provide improvements therein.
The invention provides a device of the character stated which is of great simplicity, and capable of curling the edges on can bodies or the like at a considerably higher rate than performed by the modified seaming machines now used for the purpose.-
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of said embodiment.

Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 is a rotary carrier, comprising a shaft 12 mounted in bearing-posts 14:, 15, and having fixed thereon a can support 17 a spider or bracket 19 adapted to support the spindles 21 of a plurality of heads 23 having curling means 2d thereon; and also a spider or bracket 25 adapted to support a plurality of pads 27 adapted to engage the edges or ends of the can bodies opposite the heads 23, the number of pads 27 corresponding to the number of heads 23, and the pads and heads being axially relatively movable whereby the edges of the can bodies to be curled may be brought into working relation with the curling means on said heads. As here shown, the pads 27 are axially movable on the support 25, being mounted on slides 29, and are not rotatable on their own axis when the heads 23 are rotatable. Axial movement is imparted to the slides 29 by suitable means, such as a cam 30 engaging rollers 31 on said slides 29. The carrier 10 is rotated by suitable means, as a gear on one end of the shaft 12, and a pinion 11 and pulley 12 on a counter shaft- 44.
Suitable means are provided for rotating the curling heads 23 during the rotation of the carrier 10. These means preferably comprise pinions on the spindles 21 of said heads, and a gear 52 (here shown as an internal gear) rotatable on said carrier 10, and driven in suitable manner, preferably independently, as by a pulley 5a formed on said gear 52.
The curling means 2 1 are preferably in the form of grooved rollers, as shown, a plurality being provided on each head 23. These rollers 24 roll on the edge of the can body and turn and curl the edge inward to form a roll edge, such as is usual in the type of cans known as slip-cover cans.
The edge of the can body opposite that which is being curled may or may not have a flange thereon (such as is used in forming a seam with a bottom) and bears against the flat surface of the pad during the curling operation, in such manner that any movement would produce sliding friction. The sliding friction is sufficient to prevent the can body from turning under the rolling action of the rollers 2a on the edge of the can body being curled.
The can support 17 has a plurality of can receiving recesses therein, and these recesses are preferably open in such manner as to admit of the ready reception and discharge of can bodies therefrom.
The shaft 12 of the carrier 10 is preferably mounted horizontally, and the can bodies are conveniently received from a suitable magazine or chute into the recesses 60 at the upper part of their circle of movement, resting by gravity in said recesses. In the uppermost position of the pads 27', the contour of the cam 30 is such that the slides 29 are drawn away from the heads 23 leaving an opening for the reception of the can bodies in the recesses 60. The cam 30 then has a rise 67 which moves the slides 29 toward the heads 23 and thereby causes the pads 27 to press the interposed can bodies against the curling rollers 24: on the heads 23. The portion 67 of the cam 30 has superposed thereon a slight rise which feeds the can bodies toward the heads 23 as the edge is turned inward by the curling rollers 24. By the time the curling has been completed the carrier 10 has moved the recess containing the curled can body to nearly its lowest position. The cam 30 meanwhile acts to draw the slide 29 of the pad 27 hearing against the curled can body in a direc tion away from the heads 23, thereby leaving the can body unsupported, and the can body then falls into a basket or chute, by means of which it is removed from the machine.
In order to assist the disengagement of the can bodies from the curling rollers 24,, the heads 23 may be provided with resilient knock-outs 70. These knock-outs yield as the can bodies are pushed against the.
rollers 2& by the pads 27, but react to push the can bodies away from the heads 23, when the pads 27 move away.
The machine may be adjusted for cans of different height by threading the bolts 35 attached to the cam 30 in or out. The rollers 31 in the cam 30, attached to the slide 29, draw the bracket with them when the cam is moved, the bracket 25 being made axially movable on the shaft 12 for this purpose.
The inventive ideas may receive other embodiments than that herein specifically illustrated and described.
lVhat I claim is 1. A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating carrier having thereon means for supporting aplurality of can-bodies, aplurality of rotary heads and a corresponding plurality of pads, each head having curling means thereon adapted to act endwise on and to curl the edges of said can-bodies, and each pair of heads and pads being in axial alinement, means for producing axial relative movement between said pads and heads whereby the edges of can-bodies are brought into and out of working relation with the curling means on said heads, and means for imparting rotary movement to said heads while revolving on said rotary carrier.

A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating carrier raving thereon means for supporting a plurality of can-bodies, a plurality of rotary head; and a corresponding plurality of pads, each head having curling means thereon adapted to act endwise on and to curl the edges of said can-bodies and each Y pair of heads and pads being in axial alinewhile revolving on said rotary carrier, said.
means for rotating said heads comprising spindles on which each head is mounted and pinions on said spindles, and a gear rotatable on said rotary carrier and engaging said pinions.
3. A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating carrier having thereon means for supporting a plurality of can-bodies, a plurality of rotary heads and a corresponding plurality of pads, each'head having curling means thereon adapted to act endwise on and to curl the edges of said can-bodies and each pair of heads and pads being in axial alinement, means for producing axial relative movement between said pads and heads whereby the'edges ofcan-bodies are brought into and out of working relation with the curling means on said heads, and means for imparting rotary movement to said heads while revolving on said rotary carrier, said means for rotating said heads comprising spindles on which each head is mounted and pinions on said spindles, a gear rotatable on said rotary carrier andengaging said pinions, and means for independently driving said carrier and said gear.

A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating carrier having thereon means for supporting a plurality of canbodies, a plurality of rotary heads and a corresponding plurality of pads, each head having curling means thereon adapted to act endwise on and to curl the edges of said can-bodies and each pair of heads and pads being in axial alinement, means for producing axial relative movement between said pads and heads whereby the edgesot' can-bodies are brought into and out oi? working relation with the curling means on said heads, and means for imparting rotary movement to said heads while revolving on saidrotary carrier, said heads having knockouts thereon for pressing said can-bodiesawayv from said heads when said heads and pads move axially apart. 7

A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating car-- rier having thereon means for supporting a plurality of can-bodies, a plurality of rotary heads and a corresponding plurality of pads, each head having curling means thereon adapted to act endwise on and to curl the edges of said can-bodieshnd each pair of heads and pads being in axial alinement, means for producing axial relative movement between said pads and headswhereby the edges of can-bodies are brought into and out of working relation with the curling means on said heads, and means for imparting rotary movement to said heads while revolving on said rotary carrier, said carrier turning on a horizontal axis, and said can supports being open, whereby canbodies may fall therefrom when said heads and pads are moved axially apart and said supports are at the lower part of their circle of movement.

A machine for curling edges of canbodies or the like, comprising a rotating carrier having thereon means for supporting a plurality of can-bodies, a plurality of rotary heads, and a corresponding plurality of pads, each head having a curling means thereon adapted to roll on the edge of a canbody, each pair of heads and pads being in axial alinement, means for producing axial relative movement between said pads and heads whereby the edges of can-bodies are brought into and out of working relation with the curling means on said heads, and means for inuoarting rotary movement to said heads while revolving on said rotary carrier, said pads being immovable around their own axes.
