To all whom itmay-oncem'."
Be lt knOlVlljtllllt we, ALLEN Cnossjand' Evnn'r F. DUNCAN, citizens ofthe United States, "residingat Muscatine, in the county of Muscati'neand State of, Iowa,- have-in vented new and useful lmprovements i nj Sewer-Rod-Opcrating Mechanism, of which I the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to sewer cleaning-- apparatus? 1 The primary object is toprovldea-mecha nism by which asewer rod can be operated by lever powerfrom within a manhole;
Another object is to provide a devicer-inthe nature of an obstruction remover provided with asysteiii oflevers whereby multipliedpower' be" transmitted to the means contacting the obstruction.
A still further object is to provide a device which includes an adjustable gripping means.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View taken through a manhole and sewer pipe respec- .tively to illustrate the invention in operative position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3' is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a surface of the ground, B a man hole, C a sewer pipe and D foreign matter representing an obstruction in a section of the sewer pipe.
Arranged within the manhole B and the obstructed section of the sewer pipe C, there is a device which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
A handle 1 is formed on the upper end of the hand lever 2. The hand lever 2 is pivotally secured adjacent its end remote from the handle to one section of an adjustable cross bar 8 whose sections are each provided with a head 4 arrangedcon theouter ends thereof for engaging theside walls the manhole upon 'tcliametrica lly opposite sldes -thereof,- tosubstantially brace L and to proviidean adequate fulcrum for the hand lever 2.-- V Openings o1 areformed -in =the as-- 'sociated ends'of the respectivesections of the cross bar and tI'ieSe-bpeningsreceive bolt and-nut securing means 6,wherebythe length of' the *cross bar may be adjusted r to conform to manholes of varlous-diameters.
Pivotallysecured to thelower end of-the hand lever 2 there isone end of the "link- 7 whiclrhas its opposite end tw isted at right 7 angles, Q1 1w ll3$6l-f and -bifurcated as atS to pivotally"receive-the 3136Klol llppel filld' of a substantially "vsshaped Fca'i'n :oPerating member 9 rovided with an arcuate shaped base 10 WlllCll has formed therein a channel shaped groove 11. The cam operating member 9 is pivoted adjacent its central portion between the side walls 12 of a substan tially U-shaped member 13 which slidably receives the rod portion of a ramming element 14. The ramming element 14 is provided with a head 15 adapted to contact the obstruction D as shown.
The cam operating member 9 engages the rod of the ramming element, the rod being received in the channel shaped groove thereof in a manner whereby a contacting engagement is provided to move the rod. A link 16 has formed thereon adjacent one end a slot 17 which receives a stud 18 projecting from one side wall of the substantially U-shaped member 13. The opposite end of the link 16 is provided with a pair of recesses 19 to alternatively receive a stud 20 projecting from the link 7. By adjusting the link 16 through the medium of the recesses, the gripping action of the cam operating member 9 will be reversed, so that the ramming element can be adequately moved in the direction intended. The ramming element can be released also by movement of the hand lever 2 and such movement will be in the opposite direction from the movement providing the gripping engagement be? tween the respective elements, as above set forth, this movement depending of course upon the position of the link 16.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in cross bar, a hand lever pivotally secured to the cross bar, a ramming element, and means for moving said ramming element through the medium of the lever.
2. In a device moving obstructions from sewers comprising an adjustable cross bar, a hand lever fulcrumed to the cross bar, a ramming element, a cam member receiving the ramming element and a link connecting the cam member with the hand lever as and for the purpose specified. a
3. A device for moving obstructions from sewers comprising an adjustable cross bar engaging the side walls of the manhole 0f the sewer, a hand lever, a substantially U- shaped member, a ramming element received by the substantially U-shaped member for sliable movement therein, a grooved cam member adapted to engage the ramming element, and a link pivotally connecting the cam member to the hand lever as andfor the purpose specified.
4. A device of the character described comprising an adjustable cross bar, a hand lever fulcrumed to said cross bar intermediate its ends, a link pivotally secured to the hand lever at one end and having its opposite end twisted upon right angles upon itself and bifurcated, a substantially V- shaped cam member received between the furcations of the bifurcated end, a substantially U-shaped member pivotally' receiv ing the V-shaped cam member and being provided with an arcuate shaped bottom with a channel shaped groove formed therein, a ramming element received between the bottom of the U-shaped element and within the groove of the V-shaped member respectively and means for adjusting the U-shaped member with respect to the V-shaped member as and forthe purpose specified. V
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
