P- FORMICOLO RIFLE Filed June 15. 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 6 l f L [I Am in M 5 i w v V INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Jan 6, 1925.
FFEQEQ ISLAND.
RIFLE.
Application filed June 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAs UALn FORMICOLO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented newand useful Improvements in Rifles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in firearms, the general object of the invention being to simplify the construction of the firing mechanism and the extracting mechanism.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. 7
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of a rifle made inaccordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the breech mechanism.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The remaining figures are detail views.
In these views, 1 indicates the stock 2 the barrel and 3 the breech. This breech slidably receives the breech block 4: which is provided with the handle 5 which works in the slot 6 in the breech and is adapted to engage the shoulder 6 for locking the block in firing position. The block is provided with the usual spring plunger 7 to which the firing pin 8 is connected, the spring be ing shown at 9. The rear end of the plunger is provided with the usual handle 10. The breech is provided with a recess 11 and the plunger is provided with a block 12 which engages the recess when the plunger is in its forward position, the end wall of the recess being beveled as at 11. A spring strip 13 is arranged under the breech and fastened at its forward end to the breech and its rear end is provided with an upwardly extending projection 1 1 which is adapted to engage the block 12 to hold the plunger in its rearward position, The
1924. Serial No. 719,889.
spring strip is also provided with a depending projection 15 which is adapted to be engaged by the trigger 16 so that a pull upon the trigger will move the spring strip away from the breech and thus release the block 12 from the spring strip to permit the spring to snap, the plunger forwardly and thus cause the firing pin to contact with a cartridge placed in the barrel. As the breech block is moved by its handle to cock the gun the projection will ride over the beveled wall of the recess to get in front of the block and hold the same against move ment as the breech block is moved to its foremost position. A slot 17 is formed in the bottom of the breech above the spring strip and the extractor 18 is slidably mounted in this slot and is pressed against the breech block by the spring strip. The extractor is provided with a projection 19 for engaging a depression 20 made in the breech block so that the extractor will be moved to extracting position when the breech block is moved outwardly.
From the foregoing it will be seen that as the breech block is moved outwardly by its handle the exploded cartridge will be expelled from the gun and the inner end of the block .12 will be moved beyond the projection 14 of the spring strip 18 so that when the breech block is moved inwardly again the projection will engage the block and hold the same and the plunger against movement as the breech block is shoved home and thus the gun will be cooked so thata pull on the trigger will cause the spring strip to move downwardly and free the block on the plunger from its projection to permit the spring of the plunger to throw the plunger forwardly to explode the car tridge.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a firearm, a breech having a slot in its bottom, a spring strip fastened at one end to the breech and covering the slot and haw ing a projection at its other end extending into the breech, a breech block, a handle thereon a plunger in the block having a projection thereon, which is adapted to be engaged by the projection on the spring strip to hold the plunger retracted, an extractor slidably mounted in the slot in the breech and having a projection thereon adapted to be engaged by a projection on the breech block and 2t trigger engaging a part 011 the spring strip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
PASQUALE FORMICOLO.
