A. A. FERLE FILING DEVICE Filed April 23, 1924 INVENTOR,
ATTOR/VEY8.
Patented Jan. 6, 19215.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED arenas, or new relax, n. Y.
FILING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. Farm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Mam hattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved- Filing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to improvements in filing devices, and has particular reference to a device for filing papers and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved device of simple and inexpensive construction which will securely retain papers in filing position thereon and which is so constructed as to receive a maximum number of papers.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 4 indicates a base of any suitable configuration from one end of which is extended a standard 5 having its lower end secured in the base in any preferred manner. Mounted upon the standard for vertical adjustment thereon is a supporting member 6 having a central aperture 7 for receiving the standard, said aperture communicating with a recess 8 formed in the supporting member rearwardly of the standard. Operable in the supporting member 6 longitudinally thereof is a spring pressed plunger 9 having its outer end provided with a head 10 utilized to manipulate the plunger, the inner end of said plunger being engageable in any one of a plurality of spaced recesses or notches 11 formed in the standard 5 to maintain the supporting member 6 in its various adjusted positions. The plunger 9 has formed thereon adjacent its inner end a flange 12 provided with a notch 13 in its periphery in which engages a stop 14. projecting from the supporting member 6 when the plunger is in its operative or latching position. When Application filed April 23, 1924. Serial No. 708,588.
it isdesired to adjust the supporting member 6 to a different position the inner end of the plunger may be withdrawn from the notch 11 inwhich it is engaged until the stop 14 is disengaged from a notch 13. The plunger. may then be given a slight rotation so that the flange 12 will abut against said stop to maintain the inner end of theplunger out of engagement with the standard. The proper adjustment of the supporting member 6 may then be made and when positioned at the desired elevation the plunger 10 may then again be rotated to register the notch 18 with the stop 14 and the plunger released. The spring carried by the plunger and engaging the flange 12 will then force the plunger inwardly to engage the inner end thereof in the proper notch 11.
The forward end of the supporting member 6 has secured thereto in any preferred manner one end of a flexible supporting arm 15 preferably made of a strip of spring metal, the opposite end of which is secured to a handle 16. Pivoted at 17 to the lower end of said handle is a paper retaining member or weight 18 of disk-like formation capable of engaging papers placed upon the base 4 and retaining said papers in said base by the pressure exerted on the member 18 through the medium of the spring arm 15. By pivoting the member 18 to the handle 16, which is utilized in lifting said member, it will be obvious that said member 18 will at all times flatly engage the papers upon which it is placed regardless of the thickness of the papers filed on said base. It will also be seen that by providing for the adjustment of the supporting member 6 vertically on the standard 5 a maximum number of papers may be filed upon said base.
What is claimed is:
1. A filing device including a. base, a standard carried thereby, a supporting member adjustable longitudinally of said standard, a latching device carried by said supporting member and engageable with said standard to maintain said member in various adjusted positions, a flexible arm extending from said supporting member, and a retaining member pivotally connected to said arm and cooperating with said base to retain papers thereon, the pivot for said retaining member extending transversely relative to said standard.
2. A filing device including a base, a standard carried thereby, a supporting member adjustable longitudinally of said standard and formed with a stop, a spring-pressed plunger carried by said supporting member and engageable with said standard to main tain the supporting member in adjusted positions, said plunger having a flange provided with a notch for receiving said stop when the plunger is in its operative position, and said flange being engageable with said stop by a rotation of said plunger afterthe latter has been withdrawn from engagement with said standard to maintain said plunger out of engagement with the standard while said supporting member is being adjusted, a retaining member associated with said base for retaining papers in position thereon, and a connection between said supporting and retaining members,
8. A filing device including a base, a standard carried thereby, a supporting mem ber adjustable longitudinally of said standard, a latching device having longitudinal and rotary movements relative to said supporting member and engageable by a longitudinal movementwith said standard to retain said supporting member in various adjusted positions, cooperating means on said supporting member and latching device for maintaining the latter out of engagement with said standard when said device is rotated relativeto said supportingmember and means carried by said supporting member and cooperating with said base to retain papers thereon,
