Application ,fllcd October 25, 1923. Serial No, stares.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that BENJAMIN L. BOLLAND,
at Detroit, in the State of Michigan, has invented new an of the King of England, residing county of Wayne and useful Improvements nrSwitch-Controlled Batteries, of which the following is a specification. r
The present invention has for its purpose to provide,
use in connection with radio the like where the operation in a'switch-controlled battery, a construction particularly adapted for d the switch" terminals 11, 12, 13, 14: and 15.
machines an switch is carried bythe battery so that it is always convenient for vAnother purpose is to provide a switchthereof is variable.
It is a further purpose to pr wherein the base-board the voltage ovide a switch thereof is embedded or countersunk in the composition, such as wait, rubber or other material, so that the baseeboard -is flush with the surface of the composition and so thatthe wires or connections between the various switch terminals and the battery. terminals are likewise embedded in the composition in order to'prevent their disconnection and also avoid damage.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to set forth, shown in claimed. y
In the drawings:
' Figure l is a view he hereinafter the drawings and in perspective of the improved switchecontrolled battery constructed in accordance with .the inventlon.
Figure 2 is asectional view throu same, showing the various cells an the1r connections,

motions with the switch.
Figure 4c is an enlarged h the plan view with portions of such as wax or the show the leads and the conlike,
sectional view.
through-one face of the battery to show the mounting of the base-board of the switch.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the battery as a whole,
preferably of the dry type. The battery includes an outer 'protectmg caslng of any suitable material 2, such as imitation leather fibre or the like,
which encloses such as rubber or was comp the body of composition 3,
ositmn or the the wax body or of the battery bination with a protecting casing,
crease or decrease the volta c, it depending d ent1rely upon the position 0 the switch with reference to the switch terminals.
The various cells are in circuit by means of the leads 4 with the terminalsb, 6, 7, 8 and 9. These terminals are countersunk in compo'sitionand are in circuit by means of the leads or wires 10 with The switch includes a dead terminal 16.- These terminals are carried by a base plate 17 of insulating material which isembedded in a countcrsinkl formed in the wall of a depression 19 constructed in the composition. I
A, suitable knob 20 is mounted n the base plate, there being a spring 21 or tensloning the knob to retain the switch arm 22wh1ch is carried by the knob in engagement with any one of the terminals 11 to 15, inclusive.- The Mob is connected to a binding post 23 by means of a lead 24, said binding post 23 being adapted for connection with any suitable apparatus, such as a radio machine current, thereto. @ne of the cells at one end of the batte is connected by a wire or lead 25 with a inding' post 26 which, in turn, is also adapted to be connected to the machine to which current is to be sup lied.
Obviously, when the knob is rotate the switch arm being normally engaged with the dead terminal 16, the arm passes from the dead terminal to the switch terminal 11, in which case a circuit from one of the to the switch terminal 11 and back to the attery is established the voltage being of minimum power. @bviously, as the switch arm passes from one switch terminal to another until it enga the switch teinal 15, the voltage correspondingly increases consistent with the added power deriyed from the consecutive cells as the switch; a moves.
The invention having been set forth, what :is claimed is:
. In a switch controlled battery, the comenclosed cells and acomposition covering for the cells, of a base late or latin material embedded in said coveg' and eving its (not shown) for supply of said bindin posts bein connected with the terminal ce 1 of the series and the other electrically connected with said switch arm. 10
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
BENJAMIN L. BOLLAND.
