' ville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a specification.

This 'invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in picks and particularly to the mounting of the handle in the pick head and has for its primary object to provide a secure mounting for the pick handle to prevent accidental disengagement of the head from the handle. y

A further object of the invention is to provide a pick handle mounting wherein a pair of spring clamping arms, having teeth formed thereon are interposed between the cap extensions on the pick head and the adjacent end of the pick handle for securely v anchoring the handle in the pick head, the

teeth formed on the said arms becoming embedded in the wooden ,handle when the head is entirely driven home,v while the springy nature of the arms will permit them to give outwardly during the driving of the head so that the teeth will not gouge grooves in the handle. I

With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood,the same .consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyingy pass by the teeth until the head is drawing and claimed." 4

A pick head embodies acentral body portion 1 having diametrically opposite extension pick points 2, the body portion 1 fof the pick having the usual oval-shapedopen- Figure 3 is an end elevational lview of the cross-sectional view taken' ingl 3 extendin therethrough for the mounting of the pic handle 4. The oval-shaped opening 3 slightly tapers coincident `to the adjacent tapered end of the pick handle 4 and the body l of said pick head adjacent the inner end of each point 2 carries laterally directed strap extensions 5 that are curved in cross-section as illustrated in Fig. 4, the strap extensions being disposed at an inclination corresponding to the taper of the opening 3.

To securely retain the ax handle in the pick head resilient clamp arms 6 are interposed between the strap extensions v5 and the adjacent sides ofthe pick handle. The lower end of each clamping arm 6 carries van outwardly directed lug 7, while the upper endy of the arm carries an outwardly directed finger 8 extending in the same direction as the lug 7 the lug engaging the inner edge of the strap lextension 5 while the linger 8 is adapted to enter a socket 9 formed in the wall of the opening 3 as shown in Fig. 2. The face of the clamping arm 6 adjacent the handle 4 is toothed or corrugated as at 10 for biting the handle.. 4 when the'same is driven into position as and loperation thereof will. atonce be apparent, and whilev there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be 'understood that minor changes 'may be made 'therein without departing from the` spirit and scope ofthe invention as claimed. d What is claimed as new is :-n

In a pick, a pick head, a handle having one' end secured in the head, andl means interposed between the head and handle for lanchoring the handle in the head, said means' including resilient clamp arms, havi i ing .corrugated faces engaging Athe adjacent sides of the handle and engaging the pick head at their ends in a manner to s ace the intermediate portions of the arms om the f head to permit the arms to give during the driving of the head for preventing the gou of the wooden handle by the corrugated face of the arm.

2. In a pick, a pick head having a handle receiving opening therein, strap extensions carried by the head at each side of the opening, the walls of the opening and opposed faces of the strap extensions being correspondingly tapered, the walls of the Vhead opening having oppositely disposed sockets therein, a resilient clamp arm at each side of the opening lying in the same plane with Y Y naaaeee the adjacent 'strap extension, a lug at theV inner end of the arm engaging. the inner end of the adjacent strap extension, a finger at the outer end of each arm projecting into the adjacent socket with the intermediate portion of the arm spaced from the lWall of the opening and strapA and a handle having one end confined between the clamping arms.
