F. J. GREEN WELL CAS ING IN V EN TOR.
Patented Jan. 6, 1925a FRANK J'. GREEN, OF GIBBO'N, NEBRASKA.
WELL CASING. j
Application filed April 23, 1923.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, FRANK J. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gibbon, in the county of Bualo and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tell Casings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Ihis invention relates to certain improvements in well casings and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved casing of this general' character comprising a plurality of sections adapted to be superimposed one upon the other together with means for maintaining said sections in assembled relation.
Another object yof the invention is to provide a novel and improved casing of this general character wherein that portion thereof below the water line is provided with openings to permit ingress of water within the casing. Y
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the'iseveral parts of. my improved well casing whereby certain 1mpor` 4tant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensivev and .other-y wise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my j hereinafter be definitely claimed."
better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to ythe accompanying drawings, wherein :--l
Figure l is a sectional view illustrating a well casing lconstructed in accordance with an embodimentof my invention and in applied position;. l 1 Figure2 is Va view inep'erspective illustrating a pair of adjacent sections comprised in my improved casing as hereiny disclosed; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view on an enlargedv scale, taken through one of the sections. v
My improved casing as'he'rein disclosed comprises a plurality of sections S superimposed one upon the. other and the ends of the sections are similarly beveled as at 1 to provide and assure a self-aligning tight joint when the sections are assembled. Each of the sections S is to be of dimensions preinvention. will Serial No. 634,028.
ferred with its walls of material .thickness and the casing in its entirety is intended to be sunk into water bearing gravel below all soil and quick sand to a depth required to furnish the desired quantity of water. The walls of the sections S comprised in the cas# ing above the water line orfextending through the soil and quick sand are imperfora'te with theexception of the end openings in the faces thereof to be hereinafter referred to. l
The walls of the sections S below the waterV level or within the water bearing. gravel have disposed therethrough the horizontally disposed cores or openings 2, each of said openings or cores 2 being relatively narrow in a direction transversely of the wall in which it is formed and comparatively long in a direction longitudinally of said vwall whereby the maximum diameter of said ings is slightly larger than the inner or eduction end of such core or opening, the
walls of said core or opening being tapered from the induction end to the eduction or inner end. By this formation of the openings-2 the action of the pump (not shown) associated with the assembled or applied casing is materially increased as the requisite lifting of the water will be facilitated. j In practice, Il find it preferable to have n the aggregate area of the eduction or inner In order that my invention may be theendsof `the 'cores or openings 2 of each face or wall of a section S equal to approximately fifteen per cent of the area of said wall or face. Disposed through the openings or cores 2 in adjacent ends of the sections S below the water line are the wire ties S, sim- -ilar ties 3l being also disposed through the openings a hereinbefore referred to in the adjacentends of the sections S below the water line. The ties 3 associated with the upper core or perforate section and the `flower imperforate section are directed llO through the openings or cores 2 and such water collected may be pumped or raised in any ordinary or preferred manner. As the pumping or lifting mechanism forms no part of my present invent-ion it is not believed necessary that the same be described or illustrated.
Each ofthe sections S is molded or cast in one solid piece and embedded in the upper and lower portions of each of the sections S are the reinforcements 4 preferably metallic.
From the foregoing description itV is thought to be obvious that a well casing constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience'and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, `and it will also be obvious that my. invention is susceptable of some change and modification without departing fromthe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim l A Well casing comprising a plurality of sections adapted to be superimposed' one upon the other, the Walls of each of the sections being of material thickness, reinforcements embedded within the walls of each of the sections adjacent the' opposite ends thereof, opposite end portions of each of the sections being similarly beveled to provide a male end and a female end to assure a selfaligning tight joint when the sections are assembled, thev upper sections of the casing having the walls imperforate with the exception of openings in the opposite end portions thereof, the lower section having openings disposed through the walls thereof substantially at right angles to the axis of said section, each of said openings being relatively narrow in a direction transversely of the section and comparatively long in a direction longitudinally of said section, each of said openings` being tapered from the outer end to the inner end thereof, connecting ties disposed throughthe end openings of the imperforate sections to hold the same in assembled relation, and ties disposed through the upper tapered openings of the lower section and the lower openings in the adjacent imperforate section to hold said two sections in assembled relation.
lfn testimony whereof l hereunto affix my signature.
FRANK J. GREEN.
