ARTHUR (30X, OF OLTUN. NEAR BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
FLOAT CHAMBER- Ol CAR-BURE-TORS.
Application filed January 13, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ARTHUR Cox, subjectof the King of Great Britain, residing at Harlech, Warwick Road, Olton, near Birmingham, England, engineer, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Float Chambers of Carburetors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a carburetor float-chamber that is combined or provided with self-contained means for filtering out and intercepting water and other foreign matter from the fuel during the passage of the latter from the inletvalve of the float-chamber to the outlet thereof; the said invention consisting in the improved construction hereinafter described, which is principally applicable to floatchambers of the bottom-feed type although it may also, by suitable modification in one of the parts, be also applied to chambers of the top-feed type.
The improved construction is represented, in its application to a bottom-feed floatchamber, in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of the complete float-chamber and filter unit, and
Figures 2 to 6 inclusive are detailed views of the component parts of the device, the figures showing respectively the combined filtering cup and water collecting sump, the needle valve, the fioat, and the fuel inlet plug or union.
In the filtering float-chamber unit shown in these'figures, the body a of the float chamber is of substantially the ordinary bottom-feed construction, in that it has a fuel-inlet passage a formed in the centre of its bottom, and an outlet branch (L that leads to the carburetor; the mouth or open end of this body being provided with the usual detachable cover I) that is normally secured in the position shown in Figure l by any convenient means.
Mounted inside this body a is a filtering cup 0, which is centrally attached at its base to a platform or elevated portion a of the said body; this cup being of suitable dimensions for containing the float d of the fuel-inlet valve and of such a height that its mouth or open upper end is normally closed by the cover I), which latter may be faced on its underside with felt or the like to Serial No. 529,041.
make a fuel-tight joint over the said mouth of the cup.
The walls of the cup are formed, at some distance above the bottom of the latter, with a system of outlet-apertures 6 filled or covered with wire-gauze or other filtering medium through which the fuel is constrained to pass in proceeding to the outletbranch 0, and is thereby subjected to a filtering action, the unperforated portion of the cup below the said apertures 6 serving as a collecting sump for water or the like that is filtered out of the fuel by the aperture-fillings or covering.
In the case of a bottomfeed chamber as illustrated, the cup is secured to the bottom platform of the chamber-body by a screwed plug or union 7 in which is formed, the fuel inlet passage 7" and a seat for the needle of the inlet valve, whilst above the said seat and leading into the inside of the cup in a plane below the filtering apertures, the said plug is also formed with radial delivery passages 7.
Thus fuel passing the valve seating of the bottom-feed plug enters the cup at the bot tom of the latter, and can only proceed to the outlet of the chamber by way of the apertures e where the fuel is subjected to effective filtering before leaving the cup, whilst owing to the elevated disposition of the said apertures in relation to the infiowpassages P, the filtering device provides a bottom sump of such capacity as will intercept and retain a considerable volume of filtered-out water or the like before necessitating removal for cleaning.
The cup can be readily disconnected and removed for cleansing or similar purposes by merely unscrewing the union-plug 7 after having first removed the cover 6 and withdrawing the float by way of the mouth of the said cup.
The method of mounting and securing the filter-cup within the body of the floatchamber may also be applied to chambers of the top-feed type where the inlet-valve seating is formed in the cover; the connection of the base of the cup to the bottom of the chamber-body being made, in this case, by a solid or plain plug or screwed union.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fuel filtering device for carburetors,
comprising a float chamber-having inlet and outlet openings, a combined filtering cup and Water collecting sump located in the float chamber between the inlet and outlet openings, and a combined clamping and fuel inlet plug for retaining said filtering cup within the float chamber. p V
2. A fuel filtering device for carburetors, comprising a float chamber having inlet and outlet openings, a combined filtering cup and Water collecting sump located in the wfloat chamberbetween the inlet and outlet openings and havingfiltering apertures, and a combined fuel inlet and clamping plug engaging the base of said cup and retaining said filtering cup Within the float chamber. V
3., A fuel filtering device for carburetors, comprising a float chamber having inlet and outletopenings, a combined filtering cup and Water'co'llecting sump. located in the float chambervbetWeen the inlet and outlet openings and having filtering apertures and an inlet opening, and a combined clamping and fuel admission plug inserted Within the inlet opening of the cup for retaining said cup Within the float chamber and admitting fuel thereto.
4. A fuel filterin device for carburetors, comprising a float c amberhaving inlet and outlet openings; a combined filtering cup and Water collecting sump located Within the float chamber; and'a combined clamping and fueladmission plug for retaining said filtering cup Within the float chamber and admitting fuel thereto, said cup having filtering outlets through the Walls of the same above the inlet and through Which the fuel must flow to reach the outlet from th float chamber.
5. A fuel filteringdevice for carburetors, comprising a. float chamber having an outopening of the float chamber for retaining said cup Within the float chamber and adapted to admit. fuel into the cup in a plane below the. filtering apertures of said cup.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afli m signature. 1 r v V AR-THUR cox;
