To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT PET'rERsEN, a subject of the King of Norway, of Greaaker Station, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a sofa bed of the type where the back as well as the seat is pivoted so as to swing on horizontal axes, and where the rear side of the back forms a mattress which is brought into position for use when the back is pivoted forwards.
The main feature of the invention consists therein that the seat of the sofa is rigidly connected with the front piece thereof, the latter being pivoted at its lower edge so that the seat is placed in a substantially vertical position on the floor when the front piece is turned forwards. The rear edge of the sofa seat will then point upwards and form a suitable side wall for the bed.
The invention also comprises a number of constructive features which will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

When the back piece is in the upright position illustrated in Fig. 1, the bed clothes are secured in position by means of bails 4 and 5 which are pivoted at each end of the mattress and which are secured in position by means of hooks 6, 7 or the like.
The bails 4, 5 which may be covered by fabric or the like may be adapted to form footpiece and headpiece of the bed when placed in an upright position. Seat 8 is rigidly connected with the front piece 9 of the sofa, said front piece being pivoted on hinges 10 at its lower edge in such a manner that when the front piece 9 is turned forwards, the seat 8 will come to rest in a substantially vertical position on the floor with its rear edge uppermost.
Behind the back the sofa may be provided with a cover of fabric or the like ll.
Claim:
In a sofa bed a pivoted back provided with a mattress on its rear side, a front piece pivoted at its lower horizontal edge, and a seat rigidly connected to said pivoted front piece in such a manner that when the front piece is turned forwards, the seat will rest in a substantially vertical position on the floor with its rear edge uppermost.
