Be it known that I, ZENO Os'rEuBERG, Ia citizen of the United States, and resldent of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrfuge,
of which the following is a s ecification.
This invention relates to t at type of centrifuge used in the nitration of cotton for commercial purposes.
It is the object of thls inventlon to proi vide a centrifuge of the'character indicated that may be quickly and easily loaded and quickly, and easily-dumped and reset .for loadin without t e great expense of time and la or necessitated by centrifugals as now constructed, and without the risk to life and property presented by their present form.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, at 1 is shown a hopper with a discharge outlet2 and an annular water supply passage 3 formed by the inwardly turned upper ed e 4 supplied by pipe 5.'
Ilopper 1 is provided with an exterior flange 6 resting on inner wall 7 of an annular chamber 8 having a discharge outlet at 9, the outer wall 10 of said channel extendingu wardly and forming a seat for cover 11. over 11 is provided with an annular inwardly directed lip 12,- and an outwardly extending flange 13 supporting a head 14, the latter being axially ali ned with the hopper 1. In head 14 is ormed central chute 15 and feed chutes 16-16, the c entral chute 15 broadening out above chutes 16-16 to form a sleeve 17.
Axially arranged in hopper 1, chute 15 and sleeve 17 is a shaft 18 carryin a small annular bowl 19 having a larin si e 20 and a ange. 21 extending outwar ly from the upper edge of said side. Resting on ange 21 is a bowlv top 22 preferably having a perforated flaring side 23 terminating in an outwardl extending flange 24 adapted to \rest on ange 21, and a flaring apron 25. On to 22 are arranged a number of lugs 26 on eac one o f which is pivotally mounted a dog' 27 moving in a vertical plane and welghted above its pivotal point and toward the top 22 as at 28. The dog 27 4 is provided with a -hook 29 adapted to engage the under surface of fiange 21 but normally disengaged therefrom as shown in dotted lines at 30. Top 22 is provided with an opening 31 fitted with a receiving pipe 32 Haring at its upper end 33 to encompass the lower end of chute 15 and adapted to engage lip 12 on cover 11.
At 34 is a member slidably mounted in sleeve 17 and having an arcuate inner and lower surface 35 upon which is arranged a thrust bearing 36, the lower element 37 of which engages surface 35, and the upper element 38 of which is rigidly secured to the upper end of shaft 18. Element 38 is internally geared at 39 to engage gear 40 on an element 41 mounted on driving shaft 42 operating in bearing 43. The ends of shafts 18 and 42 are curved as shown and contactv freely from element 37 as shown in solid lines. Power being applied to shaft 42 the shaft 18 and parts carried thereby are rotated'at the required speed, the centrifugal force generated throwing dogs 27 into engagement with flange 21 and securely locking the bowl 19 and top 22 together. Nitrated cotton being fed in a given quantity through chutes 16-161-15 it falls into bowl 19 and is thrown outwardly therein by the centrifugal force generated by the revolving parts and assumes a position as indicated in dotted lines at 46.
During the spinning of the bowl the excess acids in the nitrated cotton are thrown out through the perforated side 23 of top 22 against cover 11 and collected in channel 8 to be carried away through pipe 9.
When the nitrated cotton is sufficiently wrung the device is stopped and shaft 18 lowered, the dogs V27 automatically disengaging themselves from flange 21 so that the bowl 19 may be lowered to the position shown in dotted lines, the top 22- resting on hopper 1 as shown. The -bowl is now spun again by applying power to shaft 18 thereby throwin all of the material therein outwardly against the walls of hopper 1, where it is taken up by the water flowmg thereover from passage 3 and carried away through the discharge 2.
A moments revolving of bowl 19 havin thoroughly cleaned it it is again raised an filled and the process repeated.
In a centrifuge constructed and operated as above set forth the filling is effected in a short space of time; excess liquid is quickly and effectively removed into a suitable collecting chamber; after wringing, the centrifuge bowl is automatically unlocked, opened and emptied into a separate collecting chamber; the said bowl is quickly and easily reassembled and automatically locked preparatory to refilling.
By connecting and mounting the shafts 18 and 42 as shown a positive drive is ef- -fected between the two shafts and yet the lower` shaft has the necessary flexibility.
Under certain conditions it may be desirable to support bowl 19 from below instead of from above and this can be accomplished without any complexity of parts as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings.
It is to be understood, of course,V that while I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, changes in form and constructlon may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 1. In a centrifuge, a hopper, a conduit entering the upper portion thereof and encircling the same and provided with a discharge passage to said hopper, an acid chamber encompassing the upper portion of said hopper, and drainage means for said chamber.
2. In -a centrifuge, a hopper, an acid collecting chamber encompassing the upper portion thereof, a bowl revolubly and concentrically arranged in said chamber and movable along the axis thereof, a cover `for said bowl, means for locking said bowl and cover when in engagement, and means for supporting said cover on said hopper when the bowl is disengaged therefrom.
3. In a centrifuge, a hopper, -an acid collecting chamber encompassing the upper portion thereof and communicating therewith, a bowl revolubly and concentrically arranged in said chamber and movable alongthe axis thereof, a cover for said bowl arranged to engage the same when in a raised position, and means for closin communication between the hopper an acid chamber when said bowl is disengaged from said cover and lowered a distance therefrom,

In a centrifuge, a hopper, a conduit entering the upper portion thereof and encircling the'same and provided with a discharge passage to said hopper, an acid chamber encompassing the upper portion of said hopper, and drainage means for said chamber, a bowl concentrically and revolubly mounted in said hopper and chamber and discharging into said chamber, a cover member arranged on said bowl, and a feeding tube concentrically arranged upon said4 cover member.
5. In a centrifuge, a hopper, an acid collecting chamber encompassing the upper portion thereof, a bowl revolubly and concentrically arranged in said chamber and movable along the axis thereof, a cover for said bowl, means for locking'said bowl and cover when in engagement, and means for supporting said cover on .said hopper when the bowl is disengaged therefrom, an inwardly extending flange carried by said acid chamber, a feeding tube concentrically arranged upon said cover and having an outwardly flaring upper edge adapted t0 enga e said flange.
6. In a centrifuge, a bowa cover therefor, a driving shaft axially mounted on said bowl, said bowl and shaft being shiftable as a unit along the axis thereof, means for shifting said bowl and shaft in either direction along said axis, and means for effecting the separation of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in one direction and means for effecting the registration of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in the opposite direction.
7. In a centrifuge, a bowl, a cover therefor, a driving Sha-a axially mounted 'on said bowl, said bowl and shaft being shiftable as a unit along the axis thereof, means for shifting said bowl and shaft in either direction along said axis, and means for effecting the separation of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in one direction and means for effecting the registration of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in the opfosite direction, said shaft having a joint ormed therein below said shifting means to permit a swinging movement of said bowl and the lower portion of said shaft.
8. A centrifuge including a hopper, an acid chamber arranged thereon, a head supported on said acid chamber, a sleeve carried by said head, a member having a curvilinear surface in one end thereof slidably mounted in said sleeve, means for adjusting said member in said sleeve, a two part shaft having curvilinear and engaging ends,' a roller` the bearing support for one part of said Shaft and engaging the curvilinear surface of said member, a gear carried by said part, a gear v carried by the other part of said shaft and looselyA engaging the gear carried by the said first mentioned part. and a bowl carried by said shaft and arranged in Said hopper and chamber.
9. A centrifuge including a hopper, a conduit entering the upper portion thereof and encircling t e same and provided with a discharge passage to said hopper, a bowl revolubly and concentrically mounted with relation to said hopper and movable along the axis thereof, a cover normally carried by said bowl, and means for supporting the cover on said hopper when said bowl is moved along its axis away from said cover.

A centrifuge including a hopper, a conduit entering the upper portion thereof and encircling, the same and provided with a discharge passage to said hopper, a bowl revolubly and concentrically mounted with relation to said hopper and movable along the axis thereof, a cover normally carried by said bowl, means for supporting the cover onpsaid hopper when said bowl is moved along its axis away from said cover, and means for introducing material into said bowl through said cover.
12. A centrifuge including a hopper,
vmeans for introducing liquid into said hopper around the upper edge thereof, a
bowl revolubly and concentrically mounted with relation to said hopper and movable carried by said bowl, and means along the axis thereof, a cover normally for supporting the cover on said hopper whensaid bowl is moved along its axis away from said cover.
13. ln a centrifuge, a hopper, means for introducing liquid into said hopper around the upper edge thereof, an acid chamber encompassin'g said hopper and extending below the upper edge thereof, and drainage means for said chamber.
14. ln a centrifuge, an acid chamber having an upturned inner wall to form an acid collecting channel, a hopper mounted on said wall and extending thereabove, and a bowl revolubly mounted in said hopper and chamber and movable along its axis from a point where its upper edge is above the upper edge of said hopper to a point where its upper edge is below the upper edge of said hopper.
15. A centrifuge, a bowl, a cover therefor,
a driving shaft axially mounted on said bowl, said bowl and shaft being shiftable as a unit along the axis thereof, means for shifting said bowl and shaft in either direction along said axis. and means for effecting the .separation of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in one direction and means for effecting the registration of said bowl and cover when said bowl is shifted in the opposite direction, an acid chamber encompassing said hopper, a head carso ried by said acid chamber, a feedtube car` ried by said bowl cover, and a feed tube extending through said headv and discharging into said first mentioned feed tube.
