The stopper whichis free to rotate Aas well as to have-longitudinal movement with respectV to the cap in which-it is contained and to which it is attached or connected, is urged to its seat solely by the pressure of a spring contained within and between the cap and stopper.

Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and part-ly in section of the stopper seated in the bottle before the cap is completely screwed down to exert spring pressure on the stopper;

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the bottle 4 has a neck 5 provided with an external screw thread 6, there being a decided shoulder 7 between the bottle and neck.
The cap 8 or rather the skirt of the cap, is interior-ly threaded to engage the screw threads 6, and has an internal projection or flange 9 whose central opening or perforation 10 is sufficiently large to pass the body of a ground stopper 11.

No matter how hard the cap is screwed down only the@ pressure of the spring holds the stopper in place.
It will therefore not be possible to screw the cap down so hard as to burst or crack the bottle or bottle neck.
In opening the bottle, should the stopper stick, the flange 9 will engage the under side of the stopper head 13 and the screw action between the cap and bottle neck will furnish suflicient pressure on the under side of said head to remove the most obstinately stuck stopper.
The assembly of the device. is simple. The stopper is dropped into the top of the cap, the spring is then placed in and the cover 16 then screwed into. place.
The cap and the stopper are thus attached to one another as a unit, and the stopper and cap are free to rotate and have longitudinal movement with respect to one another.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the cap is made of sheet metal and the flange or projection is made by a crimp 9a.
In this instance the cap is not limited in its movement by the lower edge of the cap skirt engaging the bottle shoulder 7, but by the flange 9a striking the lip of the bottle as shown. Otherwise the structure, operation and assembly of the parts is the same.
It will thus be seen that in both of the forms shown, the stopper and cap are connected and the Stopper is easily removed from the bottle.
I claim- 1. A bottle stopper having a plug portion and a head extending above the plug portion, in combination with a bottle cap having means to extend under the head and between the head and plug, and a spring between the cap and head.
2.` A bottle stopper having a plug portion tapered for seating in a bottle neck and a head integral with said plug extending above the plug; in combination with a bottle cap, means on the cap extending between the plug head and allowing limited independent movement of the cap with respect to said stopper, and means to permit the removal of the stopper from said cap, and a spring between said means and stopper'head.
3. A bottle stopper having a plug portion and a head of larger diameter than said plug portion extending above the plug portion; in combination with a bottle cap having means to extend under the head and between the head and plug, and a spring between the cap and head.
4. A bottle stopper having a plug portion and a head extending above the plug portion; in combination with a bottle cap having means to extend under the head and between the head and plug, and a spring between the cap and head, said cap having means to engage the bott-le and limit the closing mo-vement.
5. A bottle stopper' having a plug por-- tion and an integral head extending above the plug portion; in combination with a bottle cap having means to extend under the head and between the head and plug, a spring between the oap and head and said cap` having a skirt `for engaging the bottle shoulder.
6. A bottle stopper having a plug por# tion and an integral head ot larger diameter than said plug extending above the plug; in combination with a bottle cap having a projection extending and having limited movelnent between the head and plug, a closure for the top of the cap and a spring between the closure and head.
7. A bottle stopper having a plug portion and an integral head of larger diameter than said plug extending above the plug; in combination with a bottle cap having a threaded skirt, an annular flange in said cap extending beneath the head and between the head and plug, said plug being capable of passing through said flange, a closure for said cap and a spring arranged between said closure and head.
8. A stopper having a plug portion and an integral head of larger diameter than said plug portion; in combination with a bottle cap having a thread for engagement with a similar thread on the exterior oit a bottle neck, means projecting internally ot the cap extending beneath the head and between the head and plug, said plug being capable of passing said means and means between the stopper head and cap to urge the stopper to seat the plug in the bottle neck.
