Description
M. m. KENNEY.
Fire-Tungs, NO51,986. Pqtentedlune I6, 1874.
fnvenZ0?r UNI'TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN M. KENNEY, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-TONGS.
Sptcificatlon Rrmirg part of Letters Patent N0. l5l986 da-ted June 16, 1874; application filed August 8, 1873.
T0 all whom it ma z/ concer'n:
Be it known that I, MARTIN i[. KENNEY, 0f Brenham, in ehe county 0f WVashington, State 0f Texas, lmve invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Tongs; and I he1e by decla-re t-l1e followin g 120 be a full clear, and exact description 0f the same, referenee being l1ad to the aeeompanying drawing formiug part 0f this speeificatio.
The invention eonsists in a fire-tongs, each leg of whiel1 is forked below the joint somewhat in t-he fonn of the letter Y. Tl1e. diverging ends 0f tl1e Y-shaped legs of tl1e tongs are bent in the usual shape 0f the hips of tongs und riveted together, forming a joint of two separate rivets. so that a straight line passin g thro ugh the axis 0f 0ne rivet, and prolonged, asses also through the axis of the other.
' 'lhe drawi ng represents a perspective view.
In the dmwing, P und P are the legs 0f the tongs, each forked below tl1e joint. Both prongs 0f bot-h the forked legs are bent in che usual sl1ape "0f tlxe hips of tongs, and united t0 form joints m; R and R by being formed iuto flat disks, (joint-bearings) and riveted with rivets of suitable metal. 'lhe tw0 joint ends of the leg P are shouldered to fit over the edges 0f the disks 0f the leg P. 'll1e lat te1 are eccentric, being eircular and concentrie t0 ehe rivets in 01m1; part: 0f their eircumference ove r which ehe shoulders 0f tl1e leg P W01k in opening m1d elosing the tongs, and tangent 130 the above-mentioned eirele ab the p0iut reaehed by the shoulders 0f ehe leg P when the tongs are open, the extent 0f the tongs being regula-ted by ohe shoulders of the leg P coming againsb tl1e eccentrie eircumferenee 0f the disks 0f leg P. Both prongs of the lege P me continued ab0ve the j0ints R R, and united als S, formin g the handle of tl1e tongs, so that, in ft(3t, tl1e leg P und handle S are 0ne piece spli, so zus t0 form braces aml joint-bearings for the forked e=ud 0f t-l1e leg P.
Havin g described my in vention, what Ielaim as new, and desire so secure l y Letters Ptent, 1S-
lhe leg]? zu1d handle S formed in one piece, a-ncl splitt0 fonn braces und joint-bearings for the forked end 0f the leg P, substantially as deseribed.
MARTIN l\/I. KENNEY.
