, Be it llmown that we, ALBERT HAGER and PAUL SEHRIG, both citizens of the United States, and residents of West Hoboken, in
the county of Hudson and State of Newv n Jersey, have invented a certain newa-and usel ful lmprovement in Stocking Holders for Embroidery Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to a stocking supporting device for embroidery machines and has for its primary object to provide a Y very simply constructed device of this character which will support or ho a completed stocking in open tubular orm while it is being embroidered.
Heretofore, in the operation of automatic embroidery machines of that type wherein a plurality `of stockings or like articles are simultaneously embroidered, the position of the stocking material relative to the needles being controlled by means .of a pantograph mechanism, the embroidery is applied while the stocking is in an intermediate stage of its manufacture, or in otherl words, when it isv in the form ofa flat single thickness of material. By means of the present invention, it is possible to first complete the manufacture of the stocking and then subsequently, with the stocking supported in tubular form, apply the ornamental embroidery in the. desired design to one side thereof.

Briefly, the same conslsts of an elongated tubular sheet metal structure open upon one side and provided with means at one end whereby the holder or supporter can be conveniently mounted upon an actuator bar whereby theholder is manipulated relative to the needle .in the execution of the design.' Within the4 stocking supporter a shuttle holder is positioned, the needle operating at the open side of the holder in cooperative relation with the reciprocating shuttle so as to properlylform the thread stitches through the stocking material. y

The device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing is preferably, though not necessarily, formed from sheet metal and may be conveniently produced in a single stamplng operation to provide a rear or back wall 5, and longitudinally extending parts throughout obliquely arranged parallel side walls of different lengths connected by an end wall 7. rlhe free edges of the walls 6 and 7 are preferably vturned inwardly to provide the reinforcing bead 8. rllhe wall 7, which, when the device is in use, is located at the upper end of the holder, may be of any desired shape or form and at the opposite end of the holder the reinforced edges of the side walls 6 are connected and braced by meansl of a cross strap 9. From the foregoing description, the Olp- T e stocking is first stretched downwardly over and upon the'holder or supporter with the side thereof to whichthe embroidery is to be applied extending over the open side of the holder. The holder or support mainitains the stocking material perfectly smooth .and without wrinkles. After each .one of the battery ofl holders has been supplied with a'stocking, in the operation of thel machine, these holders are shifted relative to the associated series of needles l1. which are simultaneously actuated and reciprocate back and forth through the stocking material', said needles with their threads being s upplied with thread by the reciprocating shuttles in the well known manner whereby the embroidery stitches are proper'- ly formed in the material to produce the preconceived design.

It is, therefore, to be understood that as the invention may be incorporated in other alternative structures, we reserve the privilege of resorting ,to all such legitimate changes or modifications therein as may be fairly embodied within the'spirit .and scope of the inventionas claimed.
