.intended more particularly for use in polishing carriages, in the use ot' which the brush proper is moved over the surface oft the part being polished by means of a suitable power device, polishing liquid boing de livered when desired upon the brush trom one or more receptacles embodied in the brush.

The invention has tor an object the provision ot a novel brush ot the above type characterized by simplicity ot const action and etliciency of operation.

For 'further comprehension ot' the invention and o'l the objects and advantages hereot', reference will be. had` to the follow ing description and accompanying drawing, and` to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

As here embodied my improved brush comprises a casing ot generally elongated rect-angular i'orm. iicross this casing, a short distance 'from opposite sides oi 'the centre thereof, extend two transverse paz-titions 11 which divide the casing into a ccntral compartment 12, ot comparatively small size, in which the brush operating mechanism is located, and the relatively large end compartments 13 which serve as rece-ptacles for polishing liquids. These compartments 13 are provided on their upper sides with suitable filling apertures closed by screnv caps 141 in which small air inlets may be formed.

Formed in the bottom Walls of these compartments 13, and suitably spaced thereover, are discharge openings 18 through which the polishingV liquid, or liquids, may be discharged desired on. a power operated brush. rlhese openings 18 are controlled by valve plates 19 which tit slid-ably against the underside of the casing bottom and are adjustably held in guide elements 20 formed at the sido edges of said casing. These valve plates 19 have :formed therein the openings 22 having a like relative spacing to the openings 18 in the bottom ot the casingI and which are adapted to be brought into or out ot' registry with the said openings by moving the said plates along the guides. For adjustment purposes these plates 1?' have upturned outer ends 23 on which are xed the knobs When these end elements 23 are in Contact with the end walls of the casing the openings in the valve plates are outA ot registry with those in the liquid receptacles, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 ot the drawing. By pulling the valve plates outwardly the tvvo sets ot openings are brought into registry, the outward movenient oit the valve plates being here shown as limited, when the said openings are rin registry. by means oit' pins 26 on the inner ends ot said plates which project upward into a longitudinal slot 27 in the bottom Wall oi the central compartment 12, and which are adapted lto engage the ends of said slot when the said openings are in registry.

Referring now to the brush proper the latter comprises a backing element 30 ot substantially equal area with the casing 10 and having fixed thereto a :facing element 81. This brush is adapted'to have a reciprocatory motion, longitudinally ot the casing 10, imparted thereto by means ot` a bell crank lever 32 which is itulcrumed as at in the compartment 1 2 and has a long arm extending downwardly through the slot 2T in the casing to engage in a socket 28 in the brush backing 30, and a short arm to which `is connected one end of a rod or link 311 Whose opposite end engages with an eccentric 35 on a shalt B6 in the casing. Fixed to this eccentric is a Worm gear 37 With which engages a `worm pinion 38 on the lower end ot' the shaft 39 of an electric motor 4l() mounted in the compartment 12, current being supplied to this motor from a storage battery on any other suitable source ot snp ply, through a suitable flexible lead element 411.

The brush is slidably held in position by the engagement ot the backing 30 thereof with extensions of the guides 20 for the Valve plates, one of the extensions being in the form of a leaf 45 hinged as at 46 to the said guide so that it maybe, swung back to permit of removal of the brush. This leall 45 may be normally held. iii-positionby means of springs (not shown) coiled in a well known manner around the pint-le thereof. lt is believed that the manner oi" operar tion of my improved brush will he readily understood from the .above description, it being. readily apparent that when the motor isrunning a reciprocatory movement will be. applied tothe brush, while the liquid may be .fed thereto asdesired troni the receptacles 13.
