Description
W. Id. BEAUFORT. Methods of Securing the Corners of Boxes.- N0.15l,952. PatentedJunelGJBH.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MORRIS BEAUFORT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
' IMPROVEMENT IN THE METHODS OF SECURING THE CORNERS OF BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,952, dated June 16, 1874 application liled March 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MoRRIs BEAU- FORT, of London, England, have invented a certain Improved Method of Securing the Corners of Boxes and other articles, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in an improved method of uniting the sides of boxes and other articles without the aid of glue or other adhesive substance, whereby the joint is effected more quickly, more securely, and with less labor than by the means hitherto employed.
To make my invention better understood, I will proceed to describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawing.
To carry out my invention, I first miter the edges of the two pieces of wood to be fastened together in the usual manner, as seen in Figure 1, which shows a plan of the under side of part of two sides of a box. I then drill a hole, preferably by means of a drillingmachine, vertically in each piece, from the bottom upward, at a short distance from the said mitered edge, as shown at a a in Fig. 2. I then cut out, preferably by means of a circular saw, a channel or groove, b, extending from the mitered edge to the drilled hole a. This channel is of a width less than the diameter of the hole, and may be out either in a line parallel with the side of the piece of wood, as seen in Fig. 3, or at right angles to the miter, as seen in Fi 4; but in both cases in such a manner that when the two pieces are placed together a continuous channel shall be formed between the two holes, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The two pieces are then held tightly together by means of clamps, or other suitable known means, and I then unite the pieces together by running molten metal in the said opening; and for this purpose 1 preferably employ the socalled fusible metal, which can be run in at a low heat, and may be extracted or run out by immersion in boiling water.
I have described my improved method of making joints as applied to uniting together two pieces of wood at right angles; but it will be understood that'the improved joint is applicable for uniting the pieces together at any other required angle.
Boxes and other articles formed of several pieces of wood, ivory, or other substances used in an analogous manner, may be joined by my improved method.
Having thus described my invention, and the manner of performing the same, what I claim is The improved method of securing the corners of boxes and other articles, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and at'fixed my seal this twentieth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four.
W. MORRIS BEAUFORT. [L. s]
