UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EPHRAIM TUCKER, OF VORUESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO E. W. VAILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part f Letters Tatent No. 151,939, dated June 9, 1874; application fil d March 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM TUCKER, of the city and county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the unclosed, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the closed, chair.
The invention relates to modes of connecting the seat and back of a folding chair, so as to leave a convenient intermediate space for receiving the cushion. The means by which I efl'ect this object, and which have proved, in
practice, to be a great improvement over those already known to the public, will first be fully described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then pointed out in the claim.
A A represent the long posts of a folding chair, connected near the bottom by the round a; B B, the short posts, connected by rounds I) b,- O, the ordinary seat, connected with round I) by straps c c; and 1), the back. E E are angular plates, having the side 0 fastened to the side edge of seat, and the upper end of side 0 pivoted to the inner side of long posts. This has the effect, when the parts are folded together, of throwing out the seat from the back and leaving an intermediate cushion-space, according to the length of side 1/. In order, when the back, legs, and seat are 'to be brought into the folded state, to retain in position the back, which has been pivoted at d (1 near the upper end of posts, I connect the rear of seat and lower end of back by the pivoted straps F F. The latter make a flexible connection that does not at all interfere with the folding of the chair, and yet serves as a restraint upon the back, and causes the whole chair to maintain the exact folded form which has been given to it and is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The seat (J, provided with angular plates E, and straps c and F, in combination with the legs A B and back D, as and for the purpose specified.
EPHRAIM TUCKER.
