PIPE KEY FOR 'IOBACGO PIPES.
Application filed February 5, 1923.
To all 10 from it may concern:
Be it known that I, GASSIUS WELLS RAN'NEY, citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Keys for Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe keys for tobacco pipes, and belongs to that class of tobacco smokers appliances which aredesigned to clear away accumulated obstruct-ions of any kind in the stem and smoke passage of the pipe, and also to loosen and remove any deposits in the bowl.
The object of this invention is the production of a pipe stem and bowl clearer comprising parts of special construction and operation, and which may be carried in a pocket case of comparatively small size, and unobjectionable appearance.
The construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Fig. 1 represents a side View. Fig. 2 is a like view taken at right angles with the position shown in the first figure. Fig. 3 is a side view of one form of case in which this invention may be carried. Fig. 4-. shows the application of this invention to the smoke passage of a pipe having a straight stem and mouthpiece. Fig. 5 shows the application of this invention to a pipe from which the mouthpiece has been removed, such as a pipe having a curved mouthpiece. In Figs. 4c and 5 the bowls of the pipes are shown in section. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the bowl of a pipe showing the loop scraper applied thereto.
Throughout the drawings and description the same letter is used to refer to the same part.
In considering the drawings forming a part of this application, While a straight stem pipe and the bowl portion of a curved mouthpiece pipe of a certain construction are illustrated and are commonly ofiered for sale in the form shown, it will be understood that this invention is not restricted to any special shape or make of tobacco pipe. By means of this device a pipe stem may be thoroughly cleared whenever desired; but the invention is not limited to Serial No. 617,161.
the exact construction herein shown and described, and this applicant reserves the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
The shank A is of Wire preferably of in corrodible material, and of such diameter as to readily pass through the mouthpiece and stem of a pipe. Or the mouthpiece may be unscrewed and the parts cleared separately. At the lower end of the shank A is the connecting plate a, usually Hat, and the shank and plate are both relatively stiti. As illustrated the connecting plate is made in the form of a keystone, but it will be understood that the purview of this invention is not in any sense limited to the keystone shape for the connecting plate.
Located at the lower end of the connecting plate is the clearer or scraper loop B, usually somewhat curved as illustrated, but not necessarily so, and made of wire which is relatively stiff, in order that the user may clear the bowl of his pipe quickly and effectively without injury to the loop B.
The invention may be enclosed for carrying on the person in a suitable case C. The form of the case does not relate to this invention, and may naturally be varied in compliance with the fancy of the individual maker.
The operation of this invention is believed. to be readily discernible from the drawings. The shank is used to clear the passages of pipes such as the pipes D, E, F, and the loop B is used to clear the bowls of the pipes from accumulated burned tobacco. By carrying the invention in the case C, staining of the clothing is prevented, and the invention is always available for immediate service.
Having now described this invention, and explained the mode of its operation, what I claim is 1. A pipe cleaner of the character described, having a shank portion, a connecting plate located at the lower end of the shank, and a bowl clearer and scraper lo cated at the lower end of the said connecting plate.
2. A pipe cleaner of the character de scribed, having a wire shank portion which may be passed through the stem of a pipe,
and a bowl clearer and scraper connected With the said shank portion comprising a loop of Wire the said loop being curved in the direction of its length.
3. A pipe cleaner of the character described, having a shank portion, it connecting Plate ecure to th sa d ehen ne tion, and a bowl clearer and scraper com-' prising a loop of Wire attached to the lower end of the said connecting plate.
