Description

P. 1. MITCHELL.
Stamping-Mills.
No.5-l,90l Patemedjunewau.

wniissis 'mveupm r UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo PENTECOST J. MITCHELL, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY, ASSIGN OR TO HIMSELF ANI) JOSEPH E. GAY, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAMPlNG-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,901, dated June 9, 1874; application tiled May 16, 1814.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, PENTEoosT J. MITCHELL, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and useful improvement in mills for stamping, crushing, or pulverizin g iron-stone, limestone, granite, quartz, or other rock, either containing or not ores of the base and precious nietals, of which the following` is a specication:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical transverse section of the apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I construct my stamp in anyr of the known forms used in stamp-mills. In this example A is the head and B the shaft or stem. In the shaft or stem I construct toothed racks C, between which I place an adjustable clutch, D, which receives the cam E, secured upon the revolving shaft F, bymeans ot' which the power and motion are communicated. The form of the cam and contrivance of the clutch are such that, no matter how much or little the stem may fall, the fall of the clutch will always be the same, and the distance the stem will be raised will be the same, so that, if at one blow the stamp is checked by a large piece of ore, it will be raised, at the next operation, the height of a full stroke.
The object of my invention is to secure uniform blows from the stamp upon the material to be crushed, which is accomplished by the construction and arrangement of the cam E and the adjustable clutch D, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the adjustable clutch D, racks C, and the cam E, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
PENTECOST J. MITCHELL.
