It will be observed that upon the actuation of the walking beams 30 the shaft 3;) rocked so as to move the lmucldes 36 about the axis of the shaft as a center through an arc confined substantially between a wrtical plane passing through such axis and a, plane disposed at an angle of approximately 45 to such vertical plane. lly such rocking movement of the knuckles 36 the plates,39 are alternately reciprocated in a general vertical direction. However. it will be seen that the upper end of the plate moves in a curved line whereas the lower end of the plate moves in a verti cal path along a substantially right line upon its rolling support 45. The result is a con'ibined compressive and rnhbing'action between the opposed faces of the plates 16 and 3!), the compressive action being great est in the upper portion of the machine where the material is first introduced, while at the lower outlet portion between the smooth surfaces 26 and 13 the action becomes a. purely rubbing one. By the ad justnient of the lower ends of the plates toward and from each other the fineness of the product may be accurately controlled from coarse granular particles to an im palpable powder. As the ro lers 45 are mounted for complete freedom of movement between the abutment bar 4-4 and the rear face of.thc reciprmaiting plates there is a pure rolling engagement tbercbetween and the friction at this point, which would otherwise be enormous, is practically eliminated. i
I claim:
1. A. crusher comprising facing plates arranged at an inclination to each other, one
being lined and the other movable, means to reciprocate one end of the movable plate in a curved line, and means serving as a rock- The wear i tionary, means'to reciprocate the upper end of the first plate in a curved line, and means serving as a rocking support for the lower end ofthe stationary plate whereby to maintain a substantially uniform distance between the stationary plate and a portion. of the reciproeable plate opposite thesupport.

A crusher comprising facing plateshavingtheir upper portions arranged at a substantial downward inclinatioh to each other and their lower portions more nearly paral- 7 lel, one of the plates being vertically reciprocrum supporflfor the bottom of the white whereby to maintain a substantially uni orm distance between the fixed plate and :1. A crusher comprising a rock shaft, rock arms carried thereby. a plate pivot-ally suspended from said arms and having a. wear face provided with horizontal corrugations diminishing in size dmvnwardly, a rolling rear support for the bottom of the plate whereby to maintain a substantially uniform distance between the fixed plate and a portion of the movable plate opposite the support, an inclined stationary seeend plate having a similarly corrugated face disposed in oi'iposilion to the first plate, and means to rock the shaft whereby to rccipro' 'cate the top of thefirst plate in a vertically disposed cu'rved path, substantially as described.
