To all whom it may. concern.
Be it known that 1, Armin RAMSEY, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices of the above mentioned character, adapted to conple cars of the industrial type and has for its principal object to afford a quick and safe means of operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a car coupler so constructed whereby the coupling link may not be caught between two cars and bent and so constructed that the coupling links may not be caught between the bumpers of the cars thereby preventing the necessity of moving the cars to disengage said link.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a car coupler whereon the coupling links are alwai held in such position that they may be picked up on moving cars without placing the hand in danger of being caught and injured between parts of two ('ill's.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification and in which only'a preferred embodiment of my invention is shown,

Referring in detail to the drawing, in which like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the numeral 6 designates the draw head, which is provided with a rearwardly extending horizontal shank 7. The front of the draw head 6 is provided with an upstanding hook 8 cast integral therewith and disposed below the hook 8 is a downwardly Serial No. 735,869.
projecting hook 9, the lower extremity of which is flanged at 9. The draw head 6 is fastened by means of bolts 10 passing through the flanged portion 9 of the lower hook 9 to the draw bar 11 of a car 12.
An elongated link 13 is passed under the portion 7 of the draw head 6, encircling the hook 8. The link 13 is adapted to travel in a horizontal plane in a space let, between the position 7 and the surface of the draw bar 11. The lower hook 9 limits the forward movement of the hook 13. It may be seen from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the upper face 15 of the flange 9 andthe portion 7 will prevent the link 13 from falling below a horizontal position, but it may be raised to any angle above the horizontal.
Fig. 3 shows a modified form of my device wherein the rear extremity of the portion 'Zis formed into a boss 16, through whch a bolt 17 is passed, bolting it to the draw bar 11 of the car 12. This form of the coupler is for the purpose of heavy duty.
Fig. fl: shows a form of device adaptable to the bottom of a car body 12' provided with bumpers 18. The draw head 6 consists of a shank 7, the front end of which, forms an upstanding hook 8 and a downwardly projecting lug 9. The rear end of the shank 7 forms a downwardly projecting lug or boss 19. A triangular shaped plate 20 is attached to the bottom of the draw head, the apex of the triangle at the lug 19, by bolts 21. A pair of cars 22, laterally disposed to the shank 7, intermediate its ends, are adapted to fasten the draw head of the car body, as'shown in Figs. a and The link 13 is held in the space 2-5 formed between the shank 7 and the plate 20.
In the operation of my device, one end of the link 13 of a draw head 6 is hooked over the hook 8 of the draw head of an adjoining car, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It may be clearly seen that the elongated formation of the links and hooks will limit the lateral movement of the links to a degree necessary to operation, and guide it in a longitudinal path rearward to a position where it will not interfere with parts of the car, while the vertical movement of the links is limited, as heretofore described. With these limits on the movement of the links, it is impossible for them to become engaged with parts of the car thus becoming broken or bent. It may also be seen, by referring to these figures, that the link may be grasped either to engage or disengage it Without subjecting the hand to danger of injury between parts of the car.
It must be understood that the shape of the draw heads or the length of the links or the arrangement or strength of the links must be adapted. to the use they are subjected and that any changes in these may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I
In combination with a car coupler of a draw head, a pair of oppositely disposed vertical books, a horizontal, rearwardly pr0- jecting shank intermediate said hooks, an elongated link slidably and pivotally mounted beneath said shank, a flanged base on said draw head whereby the draw head is fastened to a car, said flanged base and said shank adapted to limit the downward vertical movement of said link.
