RADIATOR FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.

To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. DRUCKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh', in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiators for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to radiators for internal combustion engines.
The present invention is adapted for usc in connection with radiators of the water cooled type employed for internal combustion engines on motor vehicles, or the like.
The object of the invention is ,to provide an attachment for radiators of the above character whereby cool air may be circulated within the same to carry off heat collected `by the cooling medium within the radiator. f
A further and important object of the invention is that the device may be attached to the filling neck or nipple of the radiator.
A still further object of the invention is that the device be adapted to indicate to the driver of the motor vehicle when the water or cooling medium within the radiator to which the same may be attached reaches a high temperature.
Other objects, and objects relating to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear inthe detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of eX- ample in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing a front portion of the motor vehicle and the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device when applied and taken at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the radiator to which the same is applied.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the signal valve employed in connection with the present device.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, 10 indicates generally a radiator casing and 11 the core therefor. At 12 is shown the filler neck or nipple which terminates at its upper end in an annular enlargement 13 interiorly threaded and adapted to receive the usual cap for closing the same. The

present radiator is of the type and construction which may be filled with water or a similar cooling medium and this water circulates about the water jackets of the associated engine for cooling the engine cylinders. At 14. Figure 2, there is shown the usual over-flow pipe which projects upwardly withinthe liller neck or nipple 12.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a short tubular body member or nipple 15 which is provided with threads 16 upon its lower end adapted to be threaded in the upper end of the filler neck 12, as shown to advantage in Figure 2. The nipple or tubular body member 15 is slightly greater in diameter than the neck 12 and terminates at its upper end in a closure 16 which is preferably curved, as shown, and the said closure in turn continuing into a bell-shaped lateral extension 17, the interior of which communicates with the interior of the'body member 15 through the passage 18. In the passage 18 there is preferably positioned a screen 19 whereby to eliminate any passage of particles into the tubular member o-r nipple 15.
The interior of the body member 15 at its upper end is formed with an annular flange 20,` the upper surface of which preferably slopes, as shown, and said flange provides a restricted passage or entrance into the member 15. Y
A valve member V is provided which preferably consists in an annular casting 22 having a bottom closure 23 and a top closure 24: which is conical in shape and terminating at its upper end in a threaded nipple 25. The casting 22 is hollow thus forming the two walls 2 6'and 27` and between these two walls there is formed a plurality of passages 28 which are arranged in circular formation and adapted to establish communication between the interior of the filler neck or nipple 12 and the passage 21 when said valve member is in a position illustrated in Figure 3. y
Into the nipple 25 there is threaded the lower end of a rod 29, said rod extending through an aligned opening 30 in the closure 16 and terminating in a ball 31. The ball 31 may be made of any material desired in order to suitably weight the valve V.
In the operation' of the present device, as-
suming that the same is attac-hed to a motor vehicle, in the manner heretofore described, with the forward movement of the motor vehicle air will pass through the valve-shaped member l? into the passage i8, and fom thence through the passage 2l, and downwardly through the passages 28 and into the upper end of the radiator casing l0. As indica-ted in Figure 2 the radiator is slightly less than filled with water or other coolingr` medium employed thus leaving a space in the upper end of the radiator into which the airmay pass. As indicated by arrows in Figure 2, the cooled air entering the lling neck or nipple .l2 will circulate about and above the water within the radiator and move upwardly and pass out through the over-flow pipe la.
Should the water or other cooling medium within the radiator reach a high tempera.- ture and expand to such a degree that the same would raise the valve member V to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2, then air will not be permitted to enter the radiator. Upon the valve member reaching this position, the ball 3l will be raised to the dotted line position shown, and this ball rwill then indicate to the driver that his engine is heated to a relatively high degree and that he should guard against over heating the same in the further operation thereof. The ball 3l therefore is only brought to a signalling position when the engine has reached a relatively high degree of temperature.
TWhile I have shown and described the preferred term of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I am aware of 'the fact, that the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be changed by( those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by zhe appended claims.

An attachment of the character described, comprising a nipple terminating at its one end in a laterally extending bellshaped member, a valve member within the nipple adapted to permit free passage of air in either direction and adapted to move upward upon a predetern'iined amount of. liquid pressure therebeneath and close the passage through said nipple, and a visible signal element carried by said valve member and exposed exteriorly of said nipple.
2. An attachment of the character described, comprising a nipple terminating at its one end in a laterally extending bellshaped member communicating with the passage through the nipple, a valve member within the nipple adapted to permit free passage of air in either direction and adapted to move upward upon a predetermined amount of liquid pressure therebeneath and close the passage through said nipple, a 'visible signal element carried by said valve member and exposed exteriorly of said nipple, and a reticulated closure in the passage establishing communication between the interior of the nipple and said bell-shaped extension.
3. ln combination with a radiator filling neck terminating at its free end in an enlargement interiorly threaded and forming a shoulderwith the associated end of the neck, a nipple having its one end threaded and adapted to beconnected to the enlarged interiorly threaded end of the neck, an annular baffle member carried upon the inner periphery of said nipple, a valve member fitted within said nipple and disposed bet scribed comprising a nipple having its one end threaded and adapted to be connected with the filler neck of a radiator and its other end terminating in a laterally extending and outwardly flared portion, an ann-ular bafile member formed upon the inner Vi wall of said nipple, a valve member seated within the nipple, and beneath said ballie member, said valve member having openings whereby when the same is disposed in spaced relation beneath the baffle member air may pass through said nipple and into said neck and when the same is lifted against the baflie member the passage through said neck is closed.
5. An attachment of the character described comprising a nipple having its one end adapted to be fitted upon the filler neck of a radiator and its other end terminating in a laterally extending and outwardly flared portion, an annular baffle member formed open the inner wall of' said nipple, a valve member seated within the nipple and beneath said baflie member, said valve member l'iaving openings adjacent its periphery whereby when the same is disposed beneath said baffle member air may freely l pass through said nipple and into the filler neck and when the baffle member is raised to engage beneath 'the bafiie member said openings become closed and thereby to closethe passage through said nipple. e

An attachment of the character described comprising a nipple having its one end adapted to be fitted upon the filler neck of a radiator and its other end terminating in laterally extending and outwardly flared portion, an annular battle-member formed upon the inner wall of said nipple, a valve member seated within the nipple and beneath said baffle member, said valve member lui) having openings adjacent its periphery whereby7 when the same is disposed beneath seid baffle member air may freeiy pass through Said nipple and into the filler neck 5 land when the baie membei1 is raised to engege beneath the baffle member said openings become closed thereby closing the passage through said nipple, and a guide rod extending upwardly from said Valve membei1 and through the Wall of the nipple, Where- 10 bj: to facilitate the movement of said Valve member.
