M. NELSON VERTICAL PAPER CUTTER Filed April 14, 1922 i -IIIIIIIH gjun" so 24 J2 dwuentoz MEYNARDIE NELSON, OF LITTLETON, NGETH CAROLINA.
VERTICAL PAPER CUTTER.
Application filed. April 14, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEYNARDIE NELSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Littleton, in the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Paper Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vertical papercutters such as are adapted to be used. in stores, for carrying rolls of wrapping paper and cutting the desired lengths of paper from the rolls.
My present invention has particular relation to types of paper cutters such as that shown in my previous Patent No. 1,116,834, issued November 10, 1914, and in my copending application Serial No. 625,572.
The object of my present improvements is to provide a vertical paper-cutter of the type indicated, which will be especially adapted for carrying very heavy and large rolls of paper and which will be easily portable to the desired point of operation, which can be operated with the same ease and facility as the smaller types of paper cutters which are used in a stationary position, and which can be furthermore knocked-down into a compact space and into but two parts or members for commercial transportation, which parts or members can be conveniently and easily assembled co-operatively in settingup he paper cutter for use.
The cutter of the class to which my present invention and improvements particular- 1y relate is designed to carry paper rolls which in weight approximate 350 to 600 lbs.
and are therefore difficult to handle under ordinary conditions and usually require about 6 to 8 feet of floor space to afford the required area for operative use. The portable cutter embodying the features of my present invention and improvements is efficiently operative within the area of a small floor space, approximately only 18 to inches square, and the construction enables the handling of the largest and heaviest paper rolls, after the roll is positionally inserted in the cutter, with the same convenience and facility and without greater expenditure and strength than is required in the usual handling of small or light rolls of paper in this general type of vertical papercutters. The latter usually rest upon a counter or other suitable support, whereas the large paper cutters of the adaptable condi- Serial No. 552,530.
tions related to my present invention and carrying heavy rolls of paper must be supported upon the floor when in use, and the features of my present invention therefore provide means for easily moving the cutter with its paper roll from desired place to place on the floor and for locking it in set position for use, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cutter embodying my present improvements, partly broken away to show detail features of construction.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View, on an enlarged scale, through the lower portion of the device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a horizontal cross-section on the line 44, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a rear-end elevation of the lower portion of the cutter.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 8 designates a main horizontal base, which is stationary when the cutter is in ope ive use and which supports the entire body structure and mechanism of the device. The body of this base is preferably constructed of hard wood with a metallic reinforcing sheet secured as a facing to both its top and bottom surfaces, as at 910, and the edges of said wood body may also be protected and reinforced by metal, as at 11. In the portable mounting of the main base 8, it is carried upon rollers, preferably three in number, said roller mountings having a lined connection with the base at cer ain points and comprising a guide roller having a revoluble-bearing connection with the base. In the preferred construction as herein illustrated. two of said rollers are mounted respectively at the cor-- ners of the front edge portion of the base 8, as at 1212, in fixed connection with the base, and the guide roller. 14, is mounted at the rear edge portion of the base and on the median longitudinal plane thereof, and is carried by a standard, 15, having a revoluble bearing in the base and projectively eXtend ing upwardly therefrom. Mounted upon the upper portion of said standard is a fixed cuff or bearing-block, 16, to which at its projective rear portion is pivoted a handlebar, 17, of suitable length, with which the complete device carrying the paper roll can be conveniently drawn about from place to place, and the guide action of the front roller 14 in the revoluble bearing of its carrying-standard 15 effected by lateral movementof said handle.
After the cutter has been moved .to the desired point it is desirable that it be locked in fixed position, and this ispreferably effected by :a brake acting upon.the-iguideroller 14. In the preferred construction, ia brake, 18, is mounted to normally slideon the tread of the guide roller 14, and the revolublestandard is tubular and-internally carries a :coiled compression spring, 19, loosely mounted therein with its lower end resting on the brake, and within said tubular standard is slidably mounted. a bo-lt,.20, having its lower end bearing against: the spring audits upper end projecting from the-standard, and thus upon depression of saidbolt the spring will be depressed and act upon the brake to cause. locking of the giuideiroller 1 1 against revolution and consequently preclude movement of the main baseii8. The
brake control is governed by movement of the'bolt when the -handle bar is swung upwardly and brought to position in line with the bolt, and in a fIIItlIGI IQOVBIBGDt of the handle bears upon thetop end of said bolt and causes depression thereof. The handlebar itself is looked in its position in which it actuates the brake-control.inechanism, when the cutter has ibeen idra'wn .or moved tothe desired location, and for this purpose a keeper is provideditoeengage (and lock the handle at its upwar'dklimit'of nioveinent, the preferred construction comprising a collar, as at 22, secured to the :mainupright standard (hereinafter described) of .the-.:device, and havin'gspring arms between which the handle bar is gripped and from-which it can readily be disengaged. Thus, in locked position of the handle bar, the gu-ideevheel cannot move either in its roller actionor laterally.
which is carried upon the ballnbearingssin this type of cutter, and above said. race track is mounted a spacer-ring,"25, having-:2. circularseries of openings corresponding to the space-d ball channels of 'the race-track and operating to positionally control the balls therein.
The roll of paper, 26, is carried upon a revolving base, 27, preferably constituted by: a metallic circular disc or plate which is in diameter adapted to the size of the paper roll used. Said revolving base operates abovethemain stationary base 8, and is mounted upon the balls 24, projecting through and beyond thespacer-ring 25, so that saidrevolving base travels upon said balls and has a free action on ball bearings. The revolving base has. an upwardly projectingstud, 28, axially locatedand forming the'zbottoin keepeiufor the rollof paper when the latter is inpo-sition upon said base, in which circumstances the projecting stud extends withinithe bore, 29, of the paper roll. The revolving base is secured inoperative connection with the main stationa yhase 8, and fixed .in its .revoluble position bearing upon -.theballs 2 1 which are retained between the race. track 28 andspacenring andthe bottom ofthe revolving base, bya rivet or bolt, 30, passing downwardly throughthebore of the: stud 28, throughthe spacer-ring 25, and through corresponding perforations inthe fixed-race track 2'3.and
the 'rnain stationary k base 8, said bolt. being headedto rest ,nponthestud 28 and having its bottomwend permanently riveted atith'e under S1018. oi; the stationary. base.
signed, being of 1 comparatively heavy or great we ght, .are liable to exert a .strain .upon: the revolving base 27, orpossibly affect wtheiopenativeconditions thereof, in theact .of placmgsuch rolls imposition upon the base when they are initially inserted for tplacementin posit-ion for carriage by the voutter inlev ice. prefer therefore, under :ISOMlGrCOZIdYDlOHS of .use, to provide means this: purpose, 11a 1 metallic segmental flange. .or
rnail, 31, is arranged to project upwardly rfrom the top ofthe main stationary haseat .,one side thereof, extending to substantially the-top plane of the revolving base and zprefera-bly corresponding to the plane of a portionof the periphery thereof. lln placingzor inserting the heavy vpaper roll to position in the cutter device, when .the roll is ".tnucked up to the cutter for placement 'OIIL-bhG-IGYChlVlDg1 base itsbottom portion is :initiallywset so that it will rest upon the metallic rail 31 and the centerstud28of said base and :lf/S weight will thus be sustained and :supporteduupon said safety rail wun'til the-roll is slipped overnrpon the stud to verticalspositionand with the latter projecting within the .ilower end of the bore thereof. The heavy weight of the roll, until it is fully positioned vertically with its bottom end resting upon theftrll surface of the revolving base, is thus notacti-venpon the outer perlpheral portion of the revolving base beyond its central ball bearings, and does not exert a strain thereon, before its weight is brought directly over the ball-bearing and evenly distributed over the surface of the revolving base.
The cutter, in its general operative mecha nism, comprises a main upright standard, 32, in vertical alignment and secured in fixed position to the main stationary base 8 at a point between the guide-roller standard 15 and the revolving base, said main standaid 32 having an arm or extension, 33, projecting laterally at its top and carrying at its outer end a cylindrical socket, 554, the bore of which is in alignment in a vertical plane with t1 e axis of the revolving base 27, and the roll of paper is retained at its top by a pin, 35, insertibly mounted in said socket and projecting downwardly within the top of the bore of the roll.
For knock-down purposes, the connection of the main standard 32 with the main stationary portable base 8 is preferably by means of a tubular stud, 36, projectively carried at the top of said stationary base, and having the bore thereof extending entirely through the latter, the bottom end of the vertical standard 32 being inserted through said bore and the top edge of the stud 36 being notched or recessed at diametrieally-opposite sides, as at 37-37, to receive laterally-projecting pins or studs, tl8-38, upon said standard and thus support the same within its socket-connection, the standard being further positionally secured by a nut, 39, screwed home upon its projecting bottom end against the under side of the base 8.
which is taken therefrom.
The cutting mechanism is carried by the main vertical standard 32, and comprises horizontal arms, 40, which are mounted in pivotal relation upon the standard, said arms being arranged in vertical series and collectively carrying at their outer ends the knife or cutting blade, 41, which positionally bears longitudinally against the side of the paper roll and operates to cut the sheet Said arms are suitably retained and supported in their pivotal bearing upon the standard, and are preferably spring-controlled, as at 42, so that the spring tension is exerted to maintain the cutting edge of the blade against the surface of the paper roll.
The general arrangement of the standard, 32, and the cutting means comprising the spring-controlled arms carrying the cutting blade, may be varied as desired in the adaptation of the present improved cutter to conditions of use, such parts being preferably substantially the same as are shown in my previous Patent No. 1,116,834, before mentioned, or as shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 625,572.
In view of the heavy character and size of the rolls of paper to which my present invention and improvements are adapted, and the corresponding enlarged size and character and required strength of the portable device itself, excess strength is required in the mounting of the longitudinal cutting blade and therefore a plurality of the cutter and sustaining arms 40 to the number of at least three or four is preferably provided, whereas in the small stationary vertical cutters adapted for lighter rolls of paper a plurality of but two of such supporting arms meets the requirement for efficient operation.
Under the conditions of construction and relative arrangement of parts as comprised in the improved portable cutter constituting my present invention, the complete device can be knocked-down into but two parts or members, for compactness in transportation, one part consisting of the main base 8 and the revolving base and other permanently connected elements which it carries and with the handle bar 17 folded down over the top of said base, and the other part consisting of the main vertical standard 32 with the supporting arms and cutting blade and other elements which it carries, and said two parts or members can be readily and conveniently set up and secured in operative relation in assembling the complete cutter into condition for use.
The operation of the device, and the advantages of my present improvements, will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
The improved features of construction provide not only the essential conditions of strength and accurate and effective opera tion without the expediture of increased power, in the convenient handling of very heavyrolls of paper, but also enable the moving of the device with ease and facility from place to place to position at the desired point of operation and for securely locking the device against further movement when it has been brought to such position.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations and modifications therein may be resorted to, in the adaptation of my invention to varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
