EDWARD. B. WEsTON, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
PRINTING DEVICE FOR WRAPPING-PAPER ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,319, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed July 9, 1888. Serial No. 279,399. (No model.)
5 State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing Devices for Wrapping-Paper Rolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of paperrolls which are mounted on stands or Within cabinets, and from which the paper is drawn and severed as required for use; and it has for its object the application to such rolls of novel printing devices whereby the store-keeper may print his card or other matter on the paper before severing it from 20 the roll.
The novelty of my invention will be herein ,set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 2 5 a front elevation of a paper roll and holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same within a case or cabinet. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the printing mechanism with a portion of the inking-ribbon broken away.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
The usual paper roll A is removably mounted in uprights B, secured to a bedpiece 0, and covered or not, as desired, by a case or cabinet D. The paper is "dfawn from the roll under guide-rollers a and an intermediate rubber or other elastic cushionplate E.
Supported in bearings F are two spools or rollers G H, around which is passed an endless inking-ribbon I, in .line with and under the cushion'plate E, and over which ribbon the paper from the roll passes.
J is a type-plate carried by pivots, as at 1), upon the ends of a forked lever K, pivoted as at f, and whose outer end projects through a vertical slot in the upright 13, and a coincident slot in the case D, when the latter is used, and which outer end has a depressing button or knob c. To hold the type-plate in a horizontal position suitable guides may be employed, for which purpose I have shown the four vertical guide-rods d, extending up through perforations in lugs e, projecting from the type-plate at or near its corners.
It will be seen from this construction that the operator has only to depress the button 0 in order to lift the type-plate against the under side of the upper portion of the inking-ribbon, which is forced against the paper and the cushion-plate E, thereby printing the paper with the matter contained upon the typ e-plate, as will be readily understood. The paper is then drawn forward and severed against the usual or other cutting-edge g.
To cause the traveling of the inking-ribbon after each depression of the button 0 to present a fresh inking-surface I provide a ratchet it upon the spool H, with which ratchet a dog 1' upon the lever K engages, so that the re-setting of the type-plate and lever by gravity will cause the dog to partiallyturn the ratchet and spool H and thereby shift the ribbon, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a suitable framework and a paper-roll journaled therein, of a cushion-plate beneath which the paper from the roll passes, a vertically-reoiprocating typeplate beneath the cushion-plate, a lever pivoted at one end to the type-plate and fulcrumed in the frame-work, the other end of said lever extending outside the frame-work, in position to be operated by the hand of the operator, and an inking-ribbon passing over the type-plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a suitable framework and a paper-roll journaled therein, of a cushion-plate beneath which the paper from the roll passes, guide-rods secured in the base of the frame-work, a vertically-reciprocating type-plate having perforated lugs through which the said guide-rods pass, a lever pivoted at one end to the type-plate and fulcrumed in the frame-work, the other end of said lever extending outside the frame-work, in position to be operated by the hand of the operator, a spool at each end of the typeplate, mechanism for turning the spools, and
an inking-ribbon carried by said spools pass- 1i, engaging with a ratchet h upon the spool ing' over the type-plate, substantially as de- H, substantially in the manner and for the I0 scribed. purpose specified.
3. The combination with the paper-roll A, T w 5 of the cushion-plate E: inking-ribbon I, spools ARD Eb 1 GH, upon which said ribbon is carried, atype- Witnesses: plate J and a forked pivoted lever K, earry- VVM. B. IDDINGS,
ingsaid type-plate and provided with a dog' J Q. HOOVER.
