residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to locks of the general type and character shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,399,538, issued Dec. 6, 1921, and is directed to several improvements in construction thereover. Among the objects and purposes of the'invention is the provision of novel means for a more ready assembly of the parts in manuacturing the lock. A further and more important object of the invention is the provision of means whereby, irrespective of the width of the door with which the lock is used, a single size of lock construction is universally adapted for use therewith, mak ing it unnecessary to manufacture several sizes with the consequent production and upkeep of dies for the different sizes. Still further objects are to provide a lock which is very easily and readily installed in a door, which is shaped and formed so as to snugly tit in the opening bored in the door for its reception, there being no leeway for the movement of the lock in the opening in the door made for its reception and at the same time the construction is simplified and a suiiicient throw for the lock bolt provided together with provision made for keeping the lock bolt in either outer operative or inner inoperative positions whenever moved to either position. These features, as well as many others not specifically stated at this time will appear fully and in detail as understanding of the invention is had from the following description, taken in connection with'the accompanying drawings, in which, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectionthrough a door with the lock installed therein and in retracted inoperative position.

In the construction of the lock, a barrel is made to enclose the lock mechanism, c0mprising two identical parts formed from sheet metal, each including a length of metal formed into semicylindrical shape as indicated at 1. At a point between the ends of the member 1 a circular opening 2 is cut in the side thereof which is surrounded by an inwardly extending circular flange 3 to serve as bearings for the lock operating parts hereafter described. In addition, at both the upper and lower edges of the member 1 for a portion of its intermediate length, the metal is pressed, as indicated at 4 whereby when two of the members 1 are placed together, as in the completed lock, an upper and a lower elongated groove or trough is formed to provide space for a part of the lock mechanism as it is operated, as later set forth.
Two of the members 1 are placed together with their edges in Contact, making a substantially cylindrical barrel and at one end a cap 5 is used to place over the ends of the members 1 to hold them together. The method of attaching this cap is the same as that shown in the patent above noted and need not be further described or illustrated in connection with the present invention. Similarly, the opposite ends of the members may be covered and held in place by a cap 6 which is attachedA to a face plate 7, an opening being made through both the end of the cap and the plate and the connection between them made by tangs 8 of ypins project7 being secured metal Jfrom the plate passing through the` opening in the cap and clinching over rgainst the inner side thereof.
The openings through the cap and plate 7 permit the ypassage of the locking bolt 9 therethrough. Said bolt is yformed of a` length of rod, and at its inner end reducedAV in size to make a short cylindrical projecftion, this projection being slotted lengthwisel i and the slot carrying into the body of thef bolt 9 for a distance, as indicated at 11, the smaller projection at the inner end of the-` bolt being divided into two parts 10, as. shown. In the assembly, the end 17 of arm 16 is put over one of the= pins,passing over the larger lsection 27 thereof, the c'upportions `are entered into the openings 2 and the two members 1 b'rojughttogether whereupon the reduced sections 28 of the pins enter the openings 24 in flange 21. The cup lportions 22 and 26 are formed with annular shoulders to bearagainstthe'inner ends of the flanges The caps 5 and 6 are then attached and the lock assembly is cmplte.

The retraction ot the bolt from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. l is effected in the same manner by turning in the opposite direction. The spring 19 serves to hold the pivot pin 20 down so that it cannot readily elevate above the line joining the centers of the two pins 28 and thereby precludes pushing in of the lock bolt or its accidental partial movement outward, both of which are undesirable. In the movement of the lock bolt, the arm 16 is elevated so that it enters the upper groove made by the parts 4:, such parts being provided only for the purpose of clearance for the said arm. They are provided on both sides in order that the lock shall be adapted for use with doors swinging from either edge, for ease of assembly in that particular care does not need to be exercised in putting the parts together, and in order that one die will serve for both halves of the barrel. The assembly of the lock is especially easy, no machine operations being required, the parts fitting together readily by hand. The part 15a rides on the inner side of the barrel when the bolt is projected and keeps it straight. In every way the construction is particularly practical and veconomical to manufacture. The ribs made by the projecting portions a bear against opposite sides of the opening 82 and hold the lock against movement. Of course, if desired, such portions need not be pressed from the metal but can be out away leaving slots for the. passage of the arm 16, but the structure described is preferred. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered as comprehending all forms of structure coming within the scope thereof.
I claim:
l. A. lock comprising a cylindrical barrel, a lock bolt mounted for projection ont of one end of the barrel or retraction into the barrel, a member pivotally connected at one end to the inner end of the bolt, and a two part operating device located between the sides of the barrel and rotatably mounted therein. each including a cup-portion with an annular flange, said flanges being located in parallel relation to each other and connected together, the opposite end of the said member being connected to said operating device between said ilanges near one edge of the flanges, substantially as described.
2. A lock comprising a substantially cylindrical barrel, a lock bolt mounted for projection out of one end of the barrel or retraction into the barrel, a member pivotally connected at one end to the inner end of the bolt. a two-part operating device located between the sides of the barrel and rotatably mounted therein, each including a cup-like portion passing through a side of the barrel, and a flange, said flanges paralleling each other and being spaced a short distance apart, two pins connected to one ot said flanges at diametrically opposed points and passing partly through the other flange, one of said pins passing through the opposite end of said member, and means for rotating the operating device.
A lock comprising a substantially cylindrical barrel and formed at opposite sides with outwardly extended portions to make elongated grooves or troughs in opposite sides of the barrel, an operating device rotatably mounted transversely of the barrel between said grooved portions, a loc-k bolt, a member pivotally connected at one end to the bolt and at its other end to the operating device to one side of its axis of rotation, and means for turning the operating device, said member entering one of said grooves as the same is moved in turning the operating device.
4. A. lock comprising a cylindrical barrel, having openings in opposed sides of the barrel, an operating member formed of two parts, each including a cup-like portion and a flange at the free edges of the cup, said cup-like portions being rotatably mounted in said openings, one end of one of said cups being provided with an opening` for an operating bar and the end of the other cup having openings for connection of a key therewith, pins between the flanges near the edges thereof, and a locking bolt operatively connected with one of said pins for projection or retraction on rotation of the operating member in opposite directions.

A lock, comprising a cylindrical barrel` a locking bolt mounted in the barrel for projection or retraction at one end thereof, a rotatably mounted operating device, connections between the bolt and operating device for moving the bolt longitudinally on rotation of the operatingdevice, and a member for manually turning the operating device adapted to be inserted into one end of said device and extended diiferent distances therein whereby said lock is adapted for different thicknesses of doors, substantially as described.

In a lock, a cylindrical barrel, a bolt mounted at one end thereof for projection and retraction, an operating device mounted for rotation between opposite sides of the barrel, said device being divided verticallj` midway between its ends` two pins extending across between the divided portions of the operating device, and a member of flat' metal pivot-ally connected at one end to one of said pins and at its other end to the inner end of the bolt.
7. A construction containing the elements in combination defined in claim 6, combined with spring means for yieldingly holding the bolt in either projected or retracted position against accidental movement.
